Fearing Trump, academics worldwide issue anti-fascist manifesto: Hundreds of professors and other intellectuals signed a declaration — modeled after a statement issued 100 years ago in Italy — decrying the rise of authoritarianism. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...

"The rising resistance to creative destruction" www.ft.com/content/4c1a... “Protectionism keeps failed business models on life support" "Annual lobbying expenditure in the US has risen by $1.7bn in real terms since 1998."

If the Islamic Republic of Iran falls*, the most likely successor is a hardline, nationalist, no less auhoritarian military regime. *I don't think it's about to fall, unfortunately **Caveat: we are all bad at predicting any regime's collapse ***The other likely scenario is chaos

I have lots of questions. India and Canada reach deal to share intelligence on terrorism, crime | Financial Post

When Trump pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2017 he started the process of ripping up the free trade playbook. The combined cost of that TPP withdrawal and Trump’s tariffs? A global economy that’s $1tn smaller and a US with 690k fewer jobs. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Another Poilievre quote Trump and the White House can use to justify annexing us… If Canada is so broken and out of control, then it makes sense for the Americans to save us, no? 🙄

Trump’s biggest tariffs were ruled unconstitutional on 5/28 Reinstated the next day to let the courts catch up Briefs were due yesterday The court just set arguments for 7/31 Lotta companies could go bust waiting for judges to rule on unconstitutional(?) tariffs www.wsj.com/economy/trad...

You've seen the headline quotes but the extended-dance-remix is even better

Did someone tell Carney that it’s a G7 summit, not a G20 one? It’s really not clear from the perspective of Canada’s geopolitical or geoeconomic interests why MBS is invited. Who’s invited next? Xi?

"Donald Trump’s steel and aluminium tariffs expected to push up US import costs by $100bn" www.ft.com/content/bd38...

Again, if we make it through this, every one of these Cold War era loopholes in laws that enable an imperial presidency needs to go (as with tariffs 👇). They were based on the assumption of no fascists & only sane pro-democracy parties, & we don’t live in that world anymore bsky.app/profile/mcop...

“the new material is as strong as petroleum-based plastics but breaks down into its original components when exposed to salt. Those components can then be further processed by naturally occurring bacteria, thereby avoiding generating microplastics that can harm aquatic life and enter the food chain.”

When you think about it, it is quite incredible that tens of millions of North Americans are all inescapably breathing in smoke from the same fires in the Prairies. It shows how small and interconnected our world is, how we share the same fate. It’s kind of like the solar eclipse… but bad😭

Still trying to understand Ottawa's concept of "nation-building": What is "the" national interest + who defines it? How are specific projects supposed to "build" a multi-national federation, from what baseline? Without clarification it's just fast-tracking an inductively generated project list.

Bloomberg economist survey: "US Inflation to Tick Higher as Tariffs Reach Consumers" 🤔 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

To me, as an Atlanticist and foreign policy guy for most of my career, that comment really stung.

We don’t need to guess what tariffs will do. We've seen this movie. Bush tried steel tariffs in 2002. Trump did it again in 2018. Both times, same plot: a handful of steel jobs saved, tens of thousands of downstream jobs destroyed.

You've seen this movie before. 2018: Steel tariffs go up → 1,000 jobs saved in steel (it's a tiny industry) → 75,000 jobs lost elsewhere (steel is used everywhere) Same script. Same cast. Spoiler alert: The ending still sucks.

Trump's trade war doesn't seem to be going very well. Job openings in manufacturing fell to their lowest level since the pandemic cepr.net/publications...

"I have put out -- me, a bloke alone in his basement -- I've put out more analysis of the Trump tariffs than Kevin Hassett and the entire Council of Economic Advisers." To be clear: This is intended as an empirical claim that you should take literally, and feel free to fact check.

MY LATEST: Fear that a foreign export restriction will imperil economic security has driven part of the recent turn to tariffs. How even modest cooperation between like-minded countries over trade/industrial policy now requires that they also commit not to use export restrictions on each other.

I've been writing this for months now and I'm kind of shocked at how few governments have come around to this point: You can't negotiate with a state of delusion. Stop trying to make a deal, start figuring out how to fight back and decouple. The Economist gets it. www.economist.com/finance-and-...

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

This isn't about whether you like Harvard or not. This is about whether any organization in our country has a right to exist without bending the knee to Donald Trump.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but… when the inflation rate goes down to 1.7%, it means prices are … still *increasing*.
