19c additives were sawdust & plaster & alum & lead & arsenic & charcoal, which added bulk to watered-down or expensive products or clarified their color. Contaminated water thinned milk & also added typhus, tuberculosis, diphtheria, listeria. tl;dr Past-food wasn't inherently safer. The FDA matters.
