Putting aside the evidence against this, I feel like if there was any viable argument to be made that they're not making cuts they might have been able to think of a word to describe what they're proposing that isn't literally "cuts"

Cards on the table, I didn't check the actual news right away so for nearly an hour I thought you were all doing an elaborate semi-coordinated bit with the "Chicago Pope" stuff

Over the weekend, The Atlantic stealth-edited out a significant factual error about Zohran Mandani’s campaign platform—specifically, his mental health care policy plan—despite issuing a correction to a different error about Eric Adams’ campaign www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

This is torture

Politicians who have physically gone to visit and advocate for people kidnapped by the Trump-Vance administration:

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

How's that poem go? "First they came for the communists / And I did not speak out / Because I was not a communist." Big thanks to @theprogressivemag.bsky.social for allowing me to share this experience.

"they're giving the rats birth control in Chicago" sounds like something your grandfather would say at Thanksgiving after getting his wires crossed on several unrelated Fox News segments he'd seen earlier that day, and yet

"Legality does not matter if the legal body itself does not care." Grateful to get to publish this piece by @sam-avraham.bsky.social, who was unlawfully detained and beaten two weeks ago in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers who threatened to kill him until they realized he wasn't Palestinian.

me every time someone from Evanston enters a public forum to denounce the proposed upzoning and ends their rebuttal with "and we don't want Evanston to turn into Rogers Park"

a member of our community was grabbed off the street by plainclothes masked officers, put in an unmarked car, and taken to an undisclosed location. this is not good enough.

My latest for @theprogressivemag.bsky.social, on Jackie Robinson, the DEI purge, and if the DoD considers "the celebration of Jackie Robinson as falling under the category of “cultural Marxism”—a term which has long been used as a racist and antisemitic trope." progressive.org/latest/penta...

Anyone who wants to better understand Chicago politics/education/labor could learn from Karen Lewis book. Chicago Mag has an excerpt here www.chicagomag.com/chicago-maga...

"If [Trump] finds I’m not in the country’s interests and decides to deport me, let God’s will be done. And I’ll continue to live." Revisiting my piece about #Haitian immigrants facing the possible revocation of #CHNV #parole. The program has now been revoked. progressive.org/latest/haiti...

Armed government agents went to the home of a lawful resident of the United States without a warrant and arrested him over the content of his speech. This is a five-alarm fire for civil liberties.

bleak

Here's a really thoughtful perspective from @malcriada.bsky.social about her experience protesting Israeli occupation of Palestine as a college student back in 2009, and the parallels between previous generations of student protest and the 2024 encampment movement!

Tearing up watching Basel Abra's and Yuval Abraham's acceptance speech. To think that so many Americans saw such a clear denunciation of U.S. enabling of Israeli apartheid, and then heard the entire room applaud that denunciation... www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gzo...

Freedom is when your boss tells you what to write

Somebody somewhere is going to meet the love of their life at an upcoming JOANN Fabric liquidation sale

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

My print column at @theprogressivemag.bsky.social on Luigi Mangione is up, just in time for his court appearance. progressive.org/magazine/mak...

do not ever say “i’m not supposed to say this but” to a reporter

Judith Butler: "Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third, a fourth, and then what happens?"

In his new book, poet and journalist Mohammed El-Kurd rejects the notion that Palestinians must prove themselves worthy of dignity and freedom.
