Gov. Hochul said the time has come to "fight" after ICE arrested NYC Brad Lander. She announced $50 million for immigrant legal services -- but that was already part of the budget, and she resisted giving more www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2025/...

Per a spokesperson, Hochul was not announcing new money, but was referencing money already included in the state budget passed in May. The spending plan had included just over $64 million for immigrant legal services, over $100 million less than advocates asked asked for

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins responds to Brad Lander's arrest. She says she is "outraged yet unfortunately not surprised"

NEW: Gov. Hochul announces that the state is dedicating $50 million for legal assistance for immigrants like those who may be targeted by ICE when leaving the federal courthouse

NY Governor Kathy Hochul inside 26 Federal Plaza now, seeking answers from DHS/ICE about the arrest of NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, who is still being detained. @thecity.nyc "How long is this going to take, I don't think he has a long rap sheet," Hochul says to agents.

State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, a mayoral contender, calls the arrest of NYC Comptroller and opponent Brad Lander "an incredibly dangerous escalation by the Trump administration." He says he's headed to Federal Plaza, the site of the arrest, soon

"It's bullshit," Gov. Hochul says of the arrest of NYC Comptroller Brad Lander by ICE. She says she will call him when he's out of detention. "But what about all the people who don't have that high profile position?"

You can't arrest people without warrants, you can't arrest people for asking to see a warrant and you can't bar reporters you don't like from City Hall press conferences This concludes today's lesson in Civics in The City

The mayor refused to answer questions on this as he walked out of the briefing room

Once again a lot of confusion about what exactly immigration are allowed and not allowed to do vis a vis showing warrants and covering their faces, so I'll point to my recent piece trying to answer those very questions

Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.

The NY HEAT Act is no more. Sponsors have introduced the Customer Savings and Reliability Act in hopes of getting the needed votes in the Assembly. Significant changes were made, giving more flexibility to utility companies and weakening some provisions to reduce gas usage

The Medical Aid in Dying Act has officially passed the Senate 35-27. Dem no votes are: Baskin Bynoe Cleare Martinez Persaud Sutton

Antonio Delgado is in Brooklyn formally launching his campaign for governor. He's flanked by New York Communities for Change members. "I'm running for governor because the status quo is broken... And New Yorkers deserve better leadership," he says to a sparse crowd

A number of elected officials quickly announced their endorsements in the race for governor after Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado announced his candidacy... just not for him www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...

LG Antonio Delgado appears to be preparing to flank Gov. Hochul from the left in the Democratic primary. He's already doing outreach to key progressive groups. But the launch was also met with immediate skepticism and quick Hochul endorsements www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...

Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado has officially launched is long-expected campaign for governor. He announced back in February that he wouldn't run for again as her LG after months of tension and splits in public www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SUn...

Advocates and lawmakers are rallying for the Legislature to pass new immigrant protections. AM Marcela Mitaynes gave empassiones remarks. "You are accusing me of being in the way, then move me," she says of ICE. "Move me to get to my people because I will not leave them alone"

Speaking in Yonkers today, Gov. Hochul said "the home of FDR is in this region" and kept talking about the mid-Hudson Valley. FDR lived in Hyde Park, at least 1.5 hours north and actually mid-Hudson Valley. Yonkers is not. She's turning into a real NYC resident 🥹

Reading a novel published in 2023 that describes people tapping their credit cards to get into the subway. Is this how it felt when users of subway tokens first read descriptions of commuters swiping into the subway?

In a fairly unusual move from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, he has weighed in on the Albany mayoral race to endorse Chief City Auditor Dorcey Applyrs in the Democratic primary

These are not the senators you're looking for. Stormtroopers invade the Senate chamber for the adoption of a resolution commemorating May 4 as Star Wars Day

Planet Albany is apparently in a galaxy far, far away

Gov. StrangeHochul: Or How Kathy Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Albany Game. "She didn’t want to eat shit anymore.” www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...

State Sen. James Skoufis is continuing his (not electoral) campaign against Gov. Hochul, introducing a bill that would prevent her from putting her name on the "inflation rebate checks" she got in the budget

"our jobs are just words." – @rebeccaclewis.bsky.social

Just sent an email to the Vatican with the subject line "Media Inquiry: Position on medically assisted suicide." How are the rest of your days going?

Ivy brings some post-budget joy to state Senate Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris after they finished the budget 38 days late (pls don't tell OGS)

White smoke from the state Capitol tonight: lawmakers have finished passing the $254 billion state budget, a cool 38 days late

"A lot of gross things in here." - state Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt on the soon to be finalized $254 billion state budget

The Assembly has finished passing the state budget (and it's not even the middle of the night). The Senate will follow soon, but Republicans are heavily debating a provision in the state operations bill

NEW: @rebeccaclewis.bsky.social analyzes the new discovery law language and the budget and finds that lawmakers were able to significantly water down the gov's initial proposal www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2025/...

We finally have details of the discovery compromise in the budget. It includes a number of significant changes compared to what Gov. Hochul had originally proposed www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2025/...

Guys, gals and nonbinary pals, the state Legislature has officially introduced the final Article VII policy budget bill, Revenue. All that's left is the four remaining appropriations bills (ya know, the actual budgetary stuff)

Oh no. No no no. Bill drafting shouldn't allow this

I spoke too soon in a previous tweet. We have ELFA as the Big Ugly, or as I like to call it, ELFugly. It has discovery language, substantial equivalence, masks and more

The state Senate has officially passed TED, meaning that the chamber has approved two of 10 budget bills. Members have moved on to debating PPGG

A total of three budget bills were printed yesterday/early this morning: TED, PPGG and HMH. Although some thorny measures were left out for now, the three bills still had details on a some important issues. Four bills down, six to go www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2025/...

For those of you staying up on this budget introduction day, we have our third bill of the night. Health and Mental Hygiene. It contains the details of the changes that leaders agreed to for involuntary commitment standards

New PPGG intentionally omits discovery, meaning we're getting a big ugly. But it does include several other measures, including Hochul's LG primary proposal, lowering the minimum age for some prison COs and provision for closure of three more state prisons

Second budget bill of the night, Public Protection and General Government. This is where we would expect to find discovery and mask legislation, so if it's not there, then we're getting a big ugly later. Three bills down, seven to go

I got four uses of this meme between my first thinking of it and the first (non debt) budget bill getting printed this afternnon

🚨 We have our first budget bill printed. It's TED, covering transportation, economic development and environmental conservation

In the Dem-controlled NY state Senate, 3 Dems joined with Republicans to advance an anti-trans bill that would allow schools to ban "biological males at birth" from playing on girls' sports teams. It won't pass the Senate, but LGBTQ+ advocates are concerned it even got out of committee.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says tomorrow at the earliest and Wednesday at the latest for budget bills to be introduced

"Do I need to do another Month Python sketch for you people?" state Senate Finance Chair Liz Krueger says when I ask her about the governor saying th budget is done. Kruger says it's not, and when asked if we're getting bills tonight, she said "no"
