Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska had to cancel their annual food distribution to tribal citizens after losing federal funding. USDA told the tribe the food program “no longer effectuates agency priorities.”

Of the 1100 sites of Indigenous petroglyphs in Wyoming, 1/4 have been vandalized. Increased protections for such sites are at a standstill as the state and Trump admin take conflicting actions.

Today is the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, when over 750k Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes during the creation of Israel. In the last day, Israel killed 115 Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has killed more than 50k Palestinians since October 7.

(1/6) BEFORE the latest round of federal budget cuts, Indian Health Service was funded at pennies on the dollar of what it actually needs.

Proposed budget cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would affect tribal radio stations and Native news programs. Often in rural, tribal communities, public broadcasting is the only news source.

If you're in Fayetteville, I'd love to see you May 24 at the Fayetteville Public Library for my book talk! www.facebook.com/events/65605...

Montana becomes the latest state to make Indigenous Peoples Day law!

There is a new toolkit for families and friends of missing Indigenous people, to help advocate for their loved ones, find support, and organize a response. Read more and find the toolkit here:

It was such an honor to give the commencement address for the College of Muscogee Nation’s class of 2025. Congratulations to all the graduates!

OK gov. vetoed a bill that would've coordinated state law enforcement response to missing and murdered Indigenous people. The same Gov told SCOTUS that OK needed more power on tribal land to keep Native victims safe. SCOTUS granted that power & this is how it's used.

Trump's proposed budget slashes $475M+ from tribal housing programs, completely cuts Native Hawaiian housing grants, and eliminates competitive funding that tribes depend on. tribalbusinessnews.com/sections/rea...

(1/3) One of the hardest things to lose to long COVID was my ability to read. I always felt like my super power was synthesizing LOTS of information, and as an investigative reporter, I would often read thousands and thousands of pages for a story.

One more plug–tomorrow, May 13, I am participating in a virtual conversation about Indigenous Sovereignty and Reproductive Politics. Sign up and get the Zoom link here: purdue-edu.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

I was so honored to receive this year‘s Lukas Book Prize. Congratulations to all the other winners and finalist! Til next time NYC.

Energy development–even when it’s clean energy–on tribal land must respect tribal sovereignty and follow federal laws. This case has been going on for years, and now OK is fighting a court order.

(1/6) As Trump vows to bring back Columbus Day, here is a reminder of why this is not just rhetoric. The 15th-century legal doctrine Columbus used to colonize and slaughter the Indigenous peoples he encountered is still the law in the U.S. today.

On May 24, I will be at the Fayetteville Public Library giving a book talk for By The Fire We Carry. Hope to see you there! www.facebook.com/events/65605...

School officials in California have told high school senior Bella Garcia she cannot wear regalia at her graduation. Cali has a law protecting Native seniors, but like with many things enforcement is lax.

Massapequa NY is refusing to comply with a state order banning racist Native mascots in schools. Now Trump is weighing in, threatening to investigate the state.

By the Fire We Carry has been shortlisted for a Reading the West Book Award in the General Nonfiction category! It would mean a lot if you support my book by voting before May 31:

A museum in Tulsa famous for its collection of Native American art and artifacts is repatriating items to tribes, including human remains. Since the passage of NAGPRA the Gilcrease has decreased its collecting of remains from 600 to 200.

If you’re in LA don’t miss renowned Cherokee/ Choctaw artist Jeffery Gibson’s show at the Broad Museum opening this month.

On May 13, I am participating in the Luce-American Academy of Religion (AAR) speaker series and will be in virtual conversation about Indigenous Sovereignty and Reproductive Politics. Register here for the Zoom link: purdue-edu.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

Israel’s total blockade on Gaza has gone on for more than 60 days. The UN warns 1 million children are at imminent risk of death.

(1/10) Today is Nat'l Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives. Hanna Harris would have been 33 years old. On the 4th of July in 2013, Harris went to Lame Deer on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana to watch the fireworks.

It is Nat'l Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Relatives & my May Substack newsletter is out. I offer a primer on how we got here. Read & subscribe at gohini.substack.com. If you or someone you love is experiencing violence, contact 1-844-7NATIVE or strongheartshelpline.org
