Fatherhood has been my life’s greatest gift. Wishing a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, father figures, and the families who love and support them.

Last night’s attack that took the life of former Speaker Melissa  Hortman and her husband, Mark, and critically injured Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, is an unspeakable tragedy.

Trump removed Medgar Evers, a fearless veteran and civil rights leader, from an Arlington Cemetery website commemorating Black soldiers. Now the Pentagon may strip his name from a naval vessel. This isn’t about “military preparedness.” This is about erasing history.

When I was arrested for protesting during civil rights activities, I was never scared.   I can't say that about what's happening today.   Arresting a U.S. Senator for protesting Trump's regime—if it can happen to Senator Padilla, it can happen to anyone.

I asked the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development this morning how he planned to ensure Americans—especially our veterans and disabled people—aren't evicted from their homes if housing programs are slashed by half under Trump's budget. He didn't have the answers.

Today I joined my colleagues on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force to reintroduce my bill to close the Charleston Loophole and Rep. Mike Thompson's to make background checks universal.

On June 10, 1963, President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act to outlaw wage discrimination on the basis of sex. 62 years later, women still earn on average $0.76 for every dollar a man earns.

771,000 people are experiencing homelessness in America. Millions more are struggling to pay rent every month. But Trump's budget proposes to cut Housing and Urban Development programs in half. Watch my hearing with the Secretary of HUD.

NTIA’s new BEAD rules are a betrayal of rural America. The program I helped create was meant to deliver real, high-speed broadband — not slow, unreliable satellite. These changes let big providers cut corners at the expense of our communities. publicknowledge.org/public-knowl...

On June 6, 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. 81 years later, D-Day continues to serve as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when nations unite against tyranny.

An EV battery plant under construction in Florence—expected to create 1,600 good-paying jobs—is hitting pause due to “policy and market uncertainty” inflicted by Trump's chaotic tariffs and Big Ugly Bill. As Trump and Musk fight, SC jobs are on the line.

Americans are worried about air travel safety under the Trump Administration. We need more investment in air safety and air traffic controllers, not FAA staff and funding cuts. Watch my @AppropsDems hearing with the FAA Administrator:

Trump’s reckless tariffs are continuing to wreak havoc on South Carolina’s economy. Jobs have already been lost, and more are at grave risk. Trump said slowing port traffic was a “good thing.” South Carolinians know how wrong he is. scdailygazette.com/2025/05/30/v...

I had the pleasure of visiting Embroidery Solutions in Kingstree. The largest producer of star fields in the U.S. flag industry, they have manufactured flags for over 70 years, ensuring quality embroidery, craftsmanship, and support for SC workers. A patriotic conclusion to Memorial Day.

My town hall is tonight at 7:00 PM in Lake City, SC! I want to hear from you. Join me. RSVP: forms.office.com/Pages/Respon...

As we commemorate Memorial Day, we remember the courageous men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country. Their sacrifice is a reminder of the true cost of freedom. We honor their memory today and always.

This senseless antisemitic attack is heartbreaking and reprehensible. It is incumbent upon all of us to denounce and root out antisemitism and hatred in all forms.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Congressman Gerry Connolly. He was a dedicated public servant and passionately served the people of Northern Virginia for 40 years. Gerry was a fighter and a patriot who loved his country.

It was a great honor to deliver the commencement address for Converse University and receive an honorary Doctor of Education degree. My message to the graduates—don't give up, and don't ever be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Congratulations Class of 2025!

The charges against Rep. McIver are unfounded. Members of Congress have the legal right and duty to conduct oversight. Trump and his henchmen are trying to quash dissent against his unpopular, destructive policies. Americans and their representatives will not be silenced.

President Trump is upset that Walmart is raising prices because of his tariffs. Remember when Trump said the tariffs would be paid by other countries, not American families? That was wrong. And now we have to pay more as a result.

I'll be holding my next town town hall on Tuesday, May 27 at 7:00 PM in Lake City, SC. We can do better, working together. I want to hear from you. Join me. RSVP: forms.office.com/g/VEJj5KxcpM

I am saddened to learn of my dear friend President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. My heartfelt prayers are with him and his family during this time.

Walmart just announced they’ll be raising prices because of Trump’s tariffs. Bananas, avocados, coffee, and other groceries will cost you more. Other stores are likely to follow. You can thank President Trump for the higher prices.

BREAKING: Americans’ confidence in the economy is now at a near record low because of Trump’s tariffs. The American people don’t want to pay higher prices and lose their jobs so that Trump can pretend to “win” some trade war.

Trump’s rant against the Digital Equity Act is false and dangerous. This legislation—passed into law on a bipartisan basis—helps seniors avoid online scams and expands telehealth in rural communities. This attack threatens digital lifelines for vulnerable Americans.

I commend the Episcopal Church for modeling integrity in the face of injustice after the Trump Admin favored white South Africans while suspending refugee resettlement for others. "Stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." (1 Corinthians 16:13) apnews.com/article/sout...

Wishing a very Happy Mother’s Day to my late wife Emily and to all of the mothers who teach, encourage, and love our children each and every day. May you be surrounded by love, laughter, and appreciation.

Trump's firing of Dr. Carla Hayden as the Librarian of Congress is unjust and unconscionable. Dr. Hayden, the first Black person to serve in this role, is highly qualified, dedicated, and respected by Members of Congress.

The convening on Capitol Hill of influential African American clergy from around the country could not be more critical.

We celebrate the first American Pope—an extraordinary milestone in the life of the Catholic Church. May Pope Leo XIV be guided by humility, courage, and a heart for justice as he steps into this sacred calling. Our prayers are with him and with all those he is called to serve.

As a result of Trump’s tariffs, 125 South Carolina workers are grappling with devastating news. While all job losses are painful, these are particularly excruciating because they were inflicted with no coherent justification by the President of the United States.

I'm wishing a Happy Birthday my dear friend and confidant—the late Congresswoman Carrie Meek. Carrie and I served together in Congress and on the Southern Regional Council. Carrie was a visionary, full of warmth, and a pioneering leader who inspired many.

Every American deserves to have access to quality, affordable health care and life-saving prescription medications. Tonight, I'm speaking on the House floor with my CBC colleagues. Watch live now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ByD...

I hope that the support promised to HBCUs in Trump's executive order come to fruition. These institutions sow seeds of change and provide opportunity for some of the nation’s most promising and deserving students.

I join in the worldwide mourning of the passing of Pope Francis. He was a leader of the faithful and a champion of human freedom. He lived a life marked by deep faith and was a world voice of conscience.
