Great to see news of Richard's forthcoming title with @punctumbooks.bsky.social, one of many scholar-led diamond open access publishers supported by @uoylibrary.bsky.social (in this case, via @openbookcollective.bsky.social) 📖 🔓 Read more about our support for the wider open research ecosystem 👇

Forthcoming, Spring 2026 with Punctum - "War Machine" is my book of speculative, machinic criticism and poetry, performing the intersections of political-economic-military extractavism, automated warfare, algorithmic noise, and ecological collapse. punctumbooks.com/titles/war-m...

Naive query for any passing experts - have there been any exhibitions in recent years that have been dedicated to the relationships between conflict / warfare and climate change, or in which this relationship did feature to a significant degree? (Beyond just a mention of 'consequences' etc.)

Soothing whirring sounds of the automated windows in my office, and neighbouring offices, adjusting every few minutes, opening/closing 2-3 painful degrees at a time.

Anyway, usual despair and self-doubt aside, I'm cobbling together a real time playback / map viewer of some of my glider flight GPS tracks. Might evolve with a much fancier / nicer interface for a Possible Thingâ„¢ in due course - will see how much progress I can make this evening.

Couldn't resist doing one more sounding today - NOAA 19, accompanied by some interested passers by! (* I wouldn't normally go anywhere this close, of course, but they made a beeline for me and then peacefully waddled by - although I did shuffle behind the antenna as they did so!).

Going to do an interview with a journalist later today about how creative practitioners are responding to AI. It is perhaps no coincidence that last night's dream involved me judging student digital artworks alongside a "special guest" judge... Sam Altman. One of the weirder scenarios to play out...

Not even pretending to hide my love of all things aviation this afternoon, at the Yorkshire Air Museum #aviation #york

Small pleasures, amidst the everything - the evening sun which floods across my desk and walls during the spring and summer months

Deeply grateful to @richardacarter.bsky.social generous and thoughtful review of my book Nonhuman Witnessing: War, Data and Ecology after the End of the World! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... @dukepress.bsky.social

Apropos of the fact that I'm having an actual research day - a long, long, long time ago, I used to do Karting, and my life was oriented quite heavily around motor cars and engines and mechanical things more broadly. It's... strange, how that chapter has entirely gone, and I work with computers now.

For #NationalPigeonDay, photographs taken by Dr Julius Neubronner’s ingenious "pigeon camera", circa 1908. More pics, and the story, here: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/dr-julius-neubronner-s-miniature-pigeon-camera

Early Bird Registration for the hybrid #DARCI Conference on Disability, Accessibility and Representation in the Creative Industries closes end of June. We have a wonderful array of keynotes and spotlight sessions, performances, paper sessions + panels enhancingaudiodescription.com/darci-confer...

Some unproductive fun for the evening - resurrecting Cosmology of Kyoto as a point and click browser game (well, fragments of it so far - I'd be foolhardy to take on the full project at this juncture, and heaven knows what its actual status is beyond 'abandonware', but interesting to try out).

Tonight! 💨💨💨

Evening sounding

Had huge fun talking about about Fieldwork, my eco-sitcom, at Uni of York last week. Even better was plotting w @anaspene.bsky.social about how we're going to develop the project, then visiting the Galton & Simpson archive w @garybrannan.bsky.social fieldworkpodcast.substack.com/p/abc-art-bi...

Tomorrow! 4pm BST - Join us for the launch event of Wind as Model, Media, and Experience! winds.report - mediaenviron.org/section/4661... - sfu.zoom.us/j/8429412299...

I learned this morning that NOAA 18 was decommissioned and shut down on Friday, meaning that my sounding earlier that day is the last I shall ever hear from it. 15 and 19 are, I believe, going to keep transmitting, albeit in a decommissioned state from 15 June www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/message...

A while ago, in a blissful moment of procrastination I dared ask "Why did Van Gogh become the poster child for immersive experiences in the 2010s?" Well, in order to answer this question we first need to go back 50 million years to when France was underwater www.goodafternoon.uk/news/immersi...

Book launch for 'Sonic Pasts: acoustical heritage and historical soundscapes' is today 😊 It's a hybrid event, with attendance in person at Uni of York as well as the option to attend online. There is a small reception afterwards if attending in person 🥂 yorkfestivalofideas.com/2025/calenda...

...Anyhow: The live, local weather and diurnal aspects of The Forest Game are now working well and seemingly bug free. Here, a rainy dawn as if the app was opened right now in Shanghai (picked from the Chrome location list).

I'm rather impressed at colleagues who have the desire and will to write academic materials / articles / books at this juncture. I currently have neither, am struggling to find such, and am very much wondering to what end I'd do so. Every idea I have, the heartfelt response is 'what's the point?"
