@tempobasketball.bsky.social Appreciate posting here, Tempo.

It started with two quotes from two presidents, exactly 38 years apart. Some words from me on American history education and why it is important to know... stuff. (A hat tip to @richarddeitsch.bsky.social for bringing the 2nd quote to my attention): benkrimmel.substack.com/p/its-import...

House votes to kill all U.S. funding for NPR, PBS and public media for next two years A major moment for conservative activists; a daunting prospect for public media and those who rely on it. Story from @deirdrekwalsh.bsky.social and me www.npr.org/2025/06/12/g...

This happened 38 years ago today. June 12, 1987. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX00...

Great idea for a piece from @brittghiroli.bsky.social: If you are an MLB player with a family, how do you handle schooling for your kids? www.nytimes.com/athletic/641...

Betsy Jochum, the last of the 60 players from the inaugural season of what became known as the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, died on May 31 at her home in South Bend, Ind. She was 104. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/11/s...

Disturbing as hell. But not surprising.

The cover of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, 18 years ago today.

If anyone following works at CBC News (or any of its offshoots) or CBC Radio-Canada (or or any of its offshoot), I hope you push for them to start posting here. It could make a significance difference if you want this site to succeed. They need legit places like that.

This is what I hope to eventually see on Bluesky. Just waves and waves of fans for a fan base losing their collective minds in real time over a coach/manager decision. The Blue Jays did end up winning, 10-9.

One person changed Canadian politics for at least a generation. And that person is from New York.

NEW: I have a 50-minute interview coming tomorrow with Cheryl Reeve, head coach for the @wnba.com's Minnesota Lynx. We went deep on the WNBA's media coverage, Napheesa Collier and leadership. She was tremendous. Never holds back. Out in the AM. To subscribe: link.chtbl.com/SportsMediaP...

NEW PODCAST: @sportsmediawatch.bsky.social and @austinkarp.bsky.social join me to discuss •The future of Mike Breen, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson. •TNT's French Open debut. •NBA viewership numbers. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s...

FYI: The 2021 final between Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas averaged 1.9 million viewers on NBC.

Sunday’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner averaged 1.8 million viewers across TNT and truTV. Peaked at 2.6M viewers at 2:30 p.m. ET. Most-Watched RG Men’s Final since 2021. Gauff-Sabalenka averaged 1.5 million viewers. Most watched RG Women’s Singles Final since 2016.

For Canadians reading: If you care about the CBC or Radio-Canada, read this. Because this is where it goes if you don't push back on those who will culture war public media. It's total kayfabe by these anti-NPR/PBS pols but it's working in the U.S. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

This comment, on @richarddeitsch.bsky.social’s story about the Women’s College World Series’ record ratings, captures the huge advantage college sports have over startup pro leagues. Century-plus-old brands, portable from one sport to the next. www.nytimes.com/athletic/641...

NEW: Texas's Game 3 win over Texas Tech set a record for the most-watched NCAA college softball game ever at 2.4 million viewers. The entire Women’s College World Series Finals averaged 2.2 million viewers, most-watched WCWS Finals in history. Details: www.nytimes.com/athletic/641...

Fever-Sky drew 2.7 million viewers on ABC on May 27. I would expect tonight to draw under 2 million viewers for sure. Hard to guess an exact number. It's a blowout right now & all sports lose tune-in when the final quarter isn't close. Also, Saturday night is least watched night on linear TV.

Congrats to Sovereignty, the official horse of Canada.

Really like CBS bringing in Dawn Staley for its WNBA Tip Off Show. Makes the production feel bigger.

There is of course personal economics. There are the many isms. But what I was clearly naive to is how many people are attracted to spectacle when it comes to voting choices & temporary alignment. The desire to watch a show. Maybe that was always so & digital and social media just turbo-charged it.

When I lived in Buffalo back in the day, one of the coolest things was staying up late to watch the NHL playoffs on Canadian television. If you lived in a U.S. city near the border, you could usually get the CBC broadcast. That's what tonight feels like -- one of those nights.

There is no better overtime in sports than overtime in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
