Hey everyone, I have a new story out showing how the sausage got made in the new NYT podcast on youth gender-affirming care. It's pretty ugly - my source refused to participate in the podcast so reporters used audio of her captured in public against her will.

When people wonder why I am VERY against making it easy to strip citizenship from Musk, this is my go-to response—it's really, really, really not a good path to go down, and we know it leads to bad stuff hurting those who are not white, with less political power/$$/etc.

Already saw at least one Dem Congressman making the same point about denaturalization and just begging, begging people not to descend to the level of calling for stripping the citizenship of people you don't like.

Palantir threatened to call police on a WIRED reporter and kicked out other journalists from a recent defense conference following reports of the data analytics firm's work with the Trump administration.

Especially because the province is now threatening to cut services for asylum-seekers, YES

Canada is masterfully squandering a once-in-a-generation talent recruitment opportunity.

I am locked out of an institutional email account that is (likely) now receiving rejections for part-time teaching apps, I have tried to get access to this for a bit (won't send it to other accounts, no one knows why). Also, this email address is linked to a server for ongoing research. Academia! 🥲

More than $30K for trans rights. Can we get a W in the chat

The linked piece gives decent advice for evaluating opportunities but honestly says little about this question. ECRs say yes to everything because the system is a mess of power dynamics (just how optional is X think) and oft-broken, precarcity fueled, incentive structures.

If you want to know how I'm doing someone asked me in a meeting yesterday "gillian how's your nervous system"

They’ll say “If you want to fight fascism, go and win elections” and then they lose the elections

I think, whatever you might think of Graeber, his notion of what Bullshit Jobs demonstrated was quite different to what right-wingers are appropriating it to mean. Indeed, part of Graeber's stance was opposition to the idea that the resources needed to live should have to be "earned" through work.

I don't think this is what Graeber on bullshit jobs was doing this, and I think this to be true because I've done the reading and we talked about it. There are a lot of legit critiques of Graeber's work, and I wish he was still around to ask/think more/converse with, but this is a strange takeaway.

I very rarely say this about my province, but Quebec has passed a good law. Revenge porn is already a serious criminal offence everywhere in Canada, but it’s still extremely difficult to get images/video removed from platforms. This will help immensely to fix that.

Update: it's bad, it's more awful uncertainty, and shows QC wants migrant labour and international student tuition money...and then to kick people (like me!) out. www.ledevoir.com/politique/qu...

Happy #wildfire #smoke season to all those who observe. Fun fact, PM2.5 are particles so tiny they seep into your blood through your lung alveoli. These particles then oxidize the inside of your blood vessels causing all sorts of damage. Wildfire smoke is a major source of heart attacks and stroke.

Immigration news in Québec: with credit to Le Québec c'est nous aussi on Instagram, we now know - There will be an immigration press conference tomorrow - It appears PR programs for workers and students will remain frozen for a bit longer (students until Nov, with anglo program students excluded)

🚨Another HUGE bit of news tonight; in collaboration with the Trump admin, Texas just kicked 20,000 undocumented college students — people who grew up in Texas and graduated from high school there — out of eligibility for in-state tuition. This may force thousands to drop out.

Today parts of Montréal I was in hit at least 22μg/m³ when measuring PM 2.5—little bits of particulate matter, likely from wildfires. The WHO guidelines for short-term 24-hr exposure is 15μg/m³ (annual average the WHO lists as 5μg/m³). Not good! www.who.int/news-room/fe...

Montréal/cross-Canada friends: The pm 2.5 measurements have been REAL bad lately (yes, that is why the sunsets are looking so nice). Wear a mask if you can outdoors (esp with asthma, long COVID, etc, or if you're exercising!), and turn on the air purifiers inside. Take care of yourselves.

I watched large portions of this segment and at one point @mattyglesias.bsky.social threw up this slide, said Dems are "making bad press on this issue" and moved on. But the polling is wildly on Dem's side on this one! Opponents of what the Trump admin is doing with him outnumber supporters 2-1!

🚨🚨🚨 In the last two hours, the Trump admin: - Banned all immigrant visas from 19 countries, including Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela - Banned all student and researcher visas to Harvard - Colluded with Texas to kick 20,000 undocumented college students off of in-state tuition.
