World War 3 kinda sucks, but you know, it was either this or pronouns

"During the darkest nights, violent and contemptuous, I still dreamed of a peaceful, shining day for us, married and tenured, when he would remember how I’d been there for him when he needed me the most. So, our equality was eroded, along with my self-confidence."

Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

Listening to an interview of a woman whose husband was taken by ICE. It’s very like the family stories I heard about Kristallnacht, but without the broken glass, and spread out rather than on one day. People desperate to get family members back but no idea how, and opposition at every point.

I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.

ICE shot a reporter... "Nick Stern, a British news photographer based in Los Angeles, is set to undergo emergency surgery for a wound sustained during the standoff between police and anti-Ice protesters in Los Angeles on Saturday."

Buffoonery aside, I think a lot of Americans can't process that multiple generations of Germans renounce and revile past actions rather than treat them as an aspect of of their culture that must be maintained.

Nature ran a piece finding that 25 million people could die as a result of ending USAID. This puts Trump and Musk in the category of the most brutal leaders of the 20th century in terms of unnecessary lives lost. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

*International students represent about 15% of all higher ed students. *They subsidize US students, so expect domestic student costs to increase *Trump complains about tariffs but he is destroying an industry where the US is a huge net exporter www.nytimes.com/2025/05/23/u...

Check out CBS News' Scott Pelley's speech at Wake Forest. "Why attack universities? Why attack journalism? Because ignorance works for power." www.readtpa.com/p/watch-cbs-...

Outstanding. Required reading by anyone interested in what's going on in the world

bc i'm tired of hearing about this and elon musk's hair plugs, let's get this out of the way: every single ban on trans healthcare includes carveouts for the exact same medications but for cisgender people

Last year my wife had breast cancer and a double mastectomy. This morning, for the first time ever, she was challenged in the changing rooms at the swimming pool. Her breasts were not what make her a woman - but, breasts or not, she is entitled to dignity and protection from vigilantes.

I just left a comment briefly explaining the importance of herd immunity to protect those too sick or vulnerable to get vaccines.

Good God, vaccine hesitancy has gone from 12% to 26% among Republican parents in the last four years. www.kff.org/health-infor...

At Central Library, Brooklyn A Trump exec order bans almost 300 words from being used by federal agencies, the military and any org that receives federal funds. These kinds of "editorial" decisions were popular in Germany in the early 30s. A running list can be found here: pen.org/banned-words...

Andry José Hernández Romero, I remember you, even if I do not know how to articulate my horror, rage, & sorrow at your treatment by my government. No one has heard from you in 63 days. As vigil, I’m posting a photo of you every day until you are returned from El Salvador.

Appalling. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Reminder that earlier naturalization leads to better integration of immigrants. Extending the period necessary for settlement in the UK will have exactly the opposite effect of what Starmer and the Labour leadership claim. "Migrants first have to prove themselves" is a nativist trope and bad policy.

What an extraordinary headline.

More than a hundred libraries on federally recognized tribal lands across the country were notified that their congressionally appropriated grant had been terminated midcycle. Those communities are at risk of losing their local libraries and the history they hold.

One of Labour’s last remaining trans councillors, Dylan Tippetts, has quit the Labour Party this morning over the party’s transphobia. Dylan made headlines in 2022 when he was elected as Plymouth’s first openly trans councillor.

We've seen many Farage false dawns before. After these results, this time it really could be different. To stop it, both Labour and the Tories will have to do something important but which they're not doing- disagree with him. New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Good piece this (£). After all the chaos Trump has unleashed, he still has remarkably high approval ratings. Suspect the same will be true for Farage, who doesn’t appear to be paying a price for Brexit on.ft.com/4jINIIZ

This is so misguided. Academics have robust "viewpoint diversity" on many issues. But we cannot entertain ideas that undermine the pursuit of knowledge. Let me give some examples of the differences -- points where we have (and should have) diverse views vs not. 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/05/a...

BREAKING: Israeli ministers agree on plan to capture all of Gaza and remain there for an unspecified amount of time, two officials say.

If you don't know about Texas SB37, it is a sweeping bill that will destroy every university in Texas. This bill has already passed the state Senate and is being considered by the state House this week.

If deporting US citizen children with cancer isn’t your redline, it’s time to reassess your priorities.

Providence City Councilor Justin Roias: “Yesterday, ICE tased & detained a Providence resident with a pregnant U.S. citizen wife & a green card interview that same day.”

Happy Saturday!

Trump denies disaster aid, tells states to do more. FEMA has denied federal assistance for tornadoes in Arkansas, flooding in WV, and a windstorm in Washington state. It also has refused NC’s request for extended relief funding in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. stateline.org/2025/04/25/t...
