My team and I at the Crowd Counting Consortium (@[email protected], Soha Hammam, & Chris Shay) have a new piece out: wagingnonviolence.org/2025/06/amer.... In it, we show that through May 2025, the size and scale of anti-Trump protests have dwarfed those in 2017. 🧵

This awfully relevant piece by @rjschoner.bsky.social reminds us why repressive regimes target NGOs, activists, opposition figures, journalists: They are key in challenging injustice and amplifying victims’ voices.

As political scientists, we really want to know when, where, and why people mobilize against repressive governments. Happy to share my latest article is out that helps us understand this in a specific context: intl legal petitions in the UN. How do courageous individuals overcome barriers?

I remember being one of the people who said things like “well, the Spanish Flu gave way to the Roaring 20s, so maybe COVID…” Halfway through the 20s I think we can confidently say that’s not how things have turned out.

After living in New Orleans for nearly two years, I’ve experienced a wide range of pests. Possum down to termites. It’s their world, we’re just trying to live in it.

Updating the political science job market website for the 2025-2026 season. Good luck to those on the market this year. #psjminfo #poliscijobmarket www.politicalsciencejobs.org/job-listings

Cuts have consequences, illustrated. As seen on TV 📺

What's your tariff panic buy? Mine is a new couch I've been putting off buying for two years.

Fun Fact! International students speech, including social media posts, are protected under the First Amendment*. It applies to them, too! (*Institutions are not self-enforcing.)

The administration is conducting a full war on higher education in this country. We must protect our students & freedom for everyone. Fascism targets academic institutions. This threat is one of many we face. We must not mince words. The Trump administration is fascist. No one is safe. No one.

For a little break if you're doom scrolling... Made this delicious galette today

This should not fall to students. Faculty with tenure or tenure lines (& especially those with the privilege of citizenship) should be treating the administrations war on higher ed like the 5-alarm fire it is, and pushing their leadership to do the same. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

🚨🚨 Deranged letter from Education Secretary Linda McMahon to Harvard’s president, cutting off federal funding for any new grants. Worth reading in full. It is NUTS.

We have travel grants of $500 for grad students going to APSA. Please apply using the following link: apsa.secure-platform.com/a/solicitati...

My first dissertation interviews were on Skype… feeling old. RIP Skype, a true loser of the pandemic. www.theverge.com/news/621353/...

Congratulations to my colleagues @stano.bsky.social and @andrewleber.bsky.social on their poignant piece in @nolanews.bsky.social. As Kamala Harris said yesterday, "courage is contagious." www.nola.com/opinions/gue...

Proud of my colleagues @andrewleber.bsky.social and @stano.bsky.social for calling out Tulane, demanding more. We stand by all students, esp intl students, & defend freedom of speech. Foreign students and faculty make American higher ed great. Free assembly & speech make this country great.

@andrewleber.bsky.social and I have an op-ed out in @nolanews.bsky.social urging @tulaneu.bsky.social to denounce and take legal action to stop the unconstitutional and utterly un-American attacks on foreign students and faculty for their political speech.

It's hard to find the words. NSF just terminated the grant for Journeys, a mentoring workshop that tried to tackle underrepresentation of women in international relations. Future scholarship will be the worse for it. But this photo from our last gathering will motivate me to keep fighting.

I opted out of the face scan at TSA today. It was a little hesitant, first time. So easy and met with kindness from TSA agent. If you’re considering opting out, I encourage you to do it! We have control of our privacy.

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond. I hope you’ll read and share the piece. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

2000+Jewish professors, staff, students letter on Mahmoud Khalil's arrest: "We hold various views…But we are united in denouncing anyone who invokes our name and cynical claims of antisemitism to harass, expel, arrest, or deport members of our campus communities." docs.google.com/document/u/1...

If you identify as a Jewish member of the academic community, and are appalled by the actions being taken in the name of defending our community, please consider signing this letter (which can be done anonymously) and also sharing it with others: forms.gle/prnRbq69a6YN...

As a Jewish faculty member at one of these universities, this is complete horseshit designed to scare universities into compliance with authoritarian overreach.
