“There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success.”

My belief is that nobody who claims to believe this or talks about it as if this belief could be credible is operating in good faith; I think 100% of them know exactly what they’re doing.

Just saw a comedian say "If vaccines caused autism then America would have trains" and I almost spit out my drink.

"If you want to hear the music played the same way over and over again, listen to recordings!" WFMT's Keegan Morris interviews Giancarlo Guerrero, new music director of the Grant Park Symphony, whose season begins June 11th. www.wfmt.com/2025/05/27/g...

a thing about Ai: when i draw my hand is in motion, my eyes observe & connect, i’m making tons of decisions and thinking with my body. Things happen that you can’t expect in this conversation of body, drawing, vision… When you remove that & give to an algorithm, your thinking is impoverished...

Current* conditions near Two Rivers, WI:

its genuinely incredible that the government has been taken over by vandals, thieves, and bald-faced liars and the media is more or less reporting on them like they're normal heads of state

work email: "Hey you around for a quick call tonight or tomorrow nothing big. no rush" my brain's translation: "I have absolutely devastating news that will crush you into dust."

Main character energy is OUT, this summer we’re bringing NPC energy. We’re posted up at the bar dropping lore and suggesting side quests. We’re leaning casually near a locked door and saying “I don’t think you have the key for that” when someone tries the handle. We’re staring at a tree.

Today the Supreme Court cleared the way for the federal government to transfer thousands of acres of national forestland including a Native American sacred site, to Resolution Copper a mining company owned by Rio Tinto and BHP. The land holds deep spiritual significance for the Western Apache tribe.

Antivaxx and libertarianism are the same--they can exist only when the majority of the population buys in to what it takes to live in a society, allowing the minority to think they are outsiders thriving on their own exceptionalism.

lol I just got momentarily hysterical thinking about the fact that the New York Times got its managing director for communications to confirm on a Saturday that it is standing by its reporting that young women in China have tiny hands and this is why Apple has its factories there

Please do not mistake my discussion of the weather for empty small talk. I'm genuinely thinking about the weather all the time. Why wouldn't I be? Why wouldn't we talk about it? It's the literal state of the earth

Bob Dylan turns 84 today.

If you like what Elon Musk has done for cars, trucks and rockets (make them catch on fire and explode with astonishing regularity), you're going to love what he does with nuclear reactors.

Hard not to notice that ICE isn't breaking up drug rings or gangs (because we would ABSOLUTELY hear about it if they were), but instead are dressing up like bank robbers and doing the laziest shit possible, like hanging out at immigration court or grabbing people for busted taillights. Worthless

I got on a conference call first thing this morning with my boss and he asked me what my shirt said, so I had to explain that it was a cute dog sailor with the text TOTAL INFORMATION COLLAPSE & THE END OF ALL CONSENSUS REALITY, THE DAMAGE CANNOT BE UNDONE

this is the president of the united states repeating unhinged racist propaganda ginned up by the worst white supremacist ideologues on earth

Hayes: Every provision in this program is cruel and they know it. That's why none of them spoke on it in committee. That's why they have no response. That's why they don't hold town halls. That's why they don't answer questions. All they do is tweet, repeat, and hide in the back until they vote yes

Unironically they should buy up the domains for about 60 defunct local newspapers in swing states. Hire two reporters to write almost exclusively about highschool sports and new restaurants opening with every 10th article about how the local GOP is screwing over people.

"Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty." -Hannah Arendt

Went to Mike Miner's memorial at the Newberry and then a get-together at the Hideout after, and beyond remembering the man it was also good to be reminded of the importance and value of everything he stood for: journalism, speaking truth to power, poetry, and human kindness.

President Declines Gift (1925)

We were never supposed to have this much access to stupid people’s thoughts

If you sat down a random panel of Americans and told them what Republicans are currently doing, my guess is that the vast majority simply wouldn't believe you. It comes off like you're describing a Bond villain. The reality sounds wildly different & more extreme than what they hear organically.

I have long criticized Jacobin for being terrible, and then I've ignored it for years for being utterly irrelevant. That said, this interview absolutely nails it. jacobin.com/2025/05/trum...

A Saudi prince asking an indentured servant if the emotional support McDonald's will be finished before the visit from the American president

when people get like "where is the American left?" I remind them whenever an effective leftist movement coalesces the state starts murdering people
