*taps mic* Hi, there! I’ve lived all over the country, wet, dry, hot, cold, and high humidity will not only kill your ass dead faster than anything else, it will suuuuuck the entire time you’re dying. Your low resting heart rate won’t do shit when your sweat is a marinade instead of a coolant.

this is superb advice, let me add a little thing that might help those of you who need to do public speaking and are not comfortable Pick 2 people from the crowd, one on one side of the room, one on the other. Talk only to them. To everyone else there it will just look like you addressing the room

I try not to indulge in kneejerk AI hatred, I really do* but shit like this, COME ON. There are a lot of things to hate about the tech but maybe the biggest one is how it's happily sold to us as a Really Useful Tool for all kinds of things it actually literally cannot do.

Can we please all try harder, as a group, to remember this bit. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Amazing: MIT researchers revealed how ChatGPT etc are destroying our brains and booby-trapped the report to expose those who want to use AI to ostensibly summarize the results. t.co/JXeTALBPds

Very few ppl in the public were in a position to fully comprehend the USAID cuts when they happened, but over time, as consequences mount, it'll be important for Ds to keep beating that drum bc the death toll will be staggering and responsibility is so crystal clear.

When was the last time you heard of a ship getting lost in the Bermuda Triangle? Even just for a little while. It's been decades, right? GPS for the win. That's SCIENCE!

Psst @stoutheartstudio.com # it's not silly, it's SCIENCE

When experts in just about every area agree that LLM are useless for *their* stuff (but grudgingly grant they might be useful to someone else), we really just need to admit that they’re a crock of shite that only impresses folk who don’t understand the domain.

Of all the unnecessary nonsense on display here, possibly the most notable is the way it's apparently assumed that dads need help to change nappies.

Please, please can someone explain to me why we are being sold a technology that literally cannot understand the concept of "fact" or "reality" as any kind of reliable tool for anything? Why it is allowed anywhere near education, research, or for that matter customer service?

I think a lot of people don't understand that in a world where everyone uses "AI" to vomit out statistically average text, the ability to use words uniquely becomes a premium skill and a critical differentiator.

Can I just say that being the designated navigatrix meant that I got to know a new city SO MUCH FASTER than the driver (studying the maps is a big advantage over passively following instructions!) and yes I am pretty damn sure satnav is making us dumber.

Read this whole thread. I'm hearing the same from friends in education - the biggest problem is with students from more disadvantaged backgrounds, especially non native speakers. Besides AI appearing as a much needed leg up, we think there's a problem w how they see the point of education...

I think a lot about how Aaron Swartz committed suicide while facing a probably long jail sentence for download some of JSTOR, but no one at Meta is going to face any repercussions for using all of Libgen to train its AI.

These testimonies reinforce exactly what I'm hearing as I go present at schools and universities about how to adapt to teaching writing in an AI world. 1. Schools and institutions embracing the technology while also requiring instructors to police academic integrity is a disaster. (cont.)

Me buying all the beading supplies: Haha fuck yeah!!! Yes!! Me sitting down and realizing I am utterly clueless as to what to do with them: Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.

I don't do much knitting with worsted/aran but I did make this throw a few years back to keep my hands busy during months of chemo. #ShowMeYourKnits worsted week 🧶 I called it Train Mountain after a nearby miniature railroad.
