people need to internalize, very quickly, that federal research grants are a hypercompetitive contracting process not charity, and that what Uncle Sam gets in return for that money is American dominance in the future

This interview with the neuroscience legend Dr Eve Marder is absolutely worth your time.

Destroying capacity at the NSF, NIH, NASA, DOE, etc. in the name of “efficiency” is like burning all of your money because you have a nice house & car & are healthy. Our science agencies have provided tremendous benefits for society and we need them at top strength to continue to do so.

Big shoutout to Cassandra Kiaha-Murray at DFW for going above and beyond yesterday to rebook me to my destination in Tucson. Amazing service! @[email protected]

I am seeing so much about the imminent "brain drain" and idk but to me the problem of losing what, hundreds? maaaaybe 1000s of scientists who have the ability to move abroad is going to be absolutely dwarfed by that of the hundreds of thousands of scientists in the US who will just be unemployed.

Analyzing microscopy images keeping you up at night? You can finally rest easy — a full bioimage analysis summer school is coming to Boston this July on @harvardmed's campus.

According to the March for Science SF website, the march in 2017 cost $70,000 😲 Sound systems, porta potties, permits... these things all cost 💵💵💵 Consider donating to @standupforscience.bsky.social 🧪

No a serious news organization should quote a right wing think tank spokesperson claiming that this is normal without fact checking that lie. Shamefully dishonest reporting by @npr.

For what it’s worth, about 150,000 federal employees retire each year, so Trump/Musk’s “buyout” yielding 75,000 — according to dubious reports — means it’s *less* than the number of employees who were presumably set to leave between now and September 30th anyway. Great work, guys.

ATTENTION If anyone has received a NoA after the "pause", please DM me with information about the mechanism and institute or center. THANK YOU

I have not seen a crisis of this magnitude since yesterday

Hi all, I am in contact with a reporter at Science magazine who would like to talk with a trainee or mentor who successfully applied for an equity/DEI-related NIH training grant or a training supplement but have not received the Notice of Award and probably won't get the grant.
