Canceling research on misinformation is not only an attack on science and academic freedom. It is also a democracy, safety, and security threat. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/b...

🚨 What is the "Great Replacement Theory" & who believes it? 🚨 In our forthcoming IMR paper, @jamesrdennison.bsky.social and I treat GRT as layered narratives, from demographic change to the elite plot. A representative German survey shows broad public agreement with several of these layers.

What a delight to receive proofs of our book! In the book, Rachid Azrout and I describe 51 cases of hate speech prosecution of 42 politicians in 9 countries since 1965. We argue, and show empirically, that such legal proceedings backfire in 3 ways. Published soon with @oxfordunipress.bsky.social.

Terminating the grants to study misinformation is “an overt act of censoring and preventing accountability,” says Stephen Lewandowsky, a misinformation researcher at the University of Bristol. “Who other than a liar would cancel misinformation research?” 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

Job alert! We are looking for two postdoctoral researchers at the intersection of political psychology, science communication, and survey methodology: -One for my Vidi project on factual belief polarization. -One for my starting grant on the politicization of science. www.ru.nl/en/working-a...

'It was...Habermas’ mentor...Adorno, who wrote that the first step in that nation’s descent into hell was, and I quote, ‘the conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power,”’ Gore said. “The Trump administration is insisting on trying to create their own preferred version of reality.'

Harvard's Steve Levitsky, coauthor of How Democracies Die: "We are no longer living in a democratic regime." Must-listen interview - remarkably clear about the severity of the situation we now face www.npr.org/2025/04/22/n...

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

Mis/disinformation research officially cancelled. Understanding the creation, content, distribution, and susceptibility is one of today’s key scientific and societal challenges. Researching this is not free speech infringement. Such a claim is intentionally misleading. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

Another installment in my oft repeated observation: the Trump administration does not offer policy proposals in the traditional sense, nor does he engage in good faith negotiation. He demands concessions that give him wealth, status, submission, or subservience.

Abrego Garcia's wife: "I will not stop fighting until I see my husband alive. Kilmar, if you can hear me, stay strong. God hasn't forgotten about you. Our children are asking when you will come home ... they miss their dad so much."

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Everything ICE has been doing in recent weeks has been awful. But there's something about "Take him anyway" that should chill you even further to your bones.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind. An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one." The other said, "Take him anyway." So they did.

Happy to see this paper out!

The federal state of Saxony has just published first *register data* results from the German elections in 2025: These numbers show that young women overwhelmingly supported the LINKE (37%). Young men voted more strongly for the AfD (42%), but this is lower than among middle-aged men (50%).

“The termination of your grant represents an urgent priority for this administration” My NEH grant has been terminated Incredible when the funding for your book about the educational culture wars is cut as a result of the educational culture wars You can’t say history isn’t relevant

Levitsky on the most likely medium-term future for the US. I've expressed similar thoughts - lots of binary thinking out there about the likelihood of a return to the pre-2016 status quo vs. a descent into consolidated authoritarianism, but reality is likely to be messier and harder to classify

Great new piece form @philiprocco.bsky.social on what's at stake as the Trump administration works to undermine our official data: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb....

Historical parallel here: In 2006, the political rights of Daniel Feret, then leader of the Belgian party called Front National (really!), were suspended for ten years. This was related to a conviction for, in brief, hate speech. In 2007, Feret was kicked out of his party - which never recovered.

"Dit is bijna hybride oorlogsvoering. De VS probeert de Groenlanders op te zetten tegen de Denen, in de hoop dat ze hen de rug toe keren. Je kan het vergelijken met wat Rusland heeft gedaan in Oost-Oekraïne." Bert De Vroey #terzaketv

Dit móet een één-aprilgrap zijn. www.rtl.nl/nieuws/polit...

New paper with Tilko Swalve, Merle Huber, Christoph Hönnige & @donyhu.bsky.social now out in @democratization.bsky.social 🥳 We argue that we need to look more closely at the threats to liberal democracy posed by authoritarian “populists before power” 🚨 doi.org/10.1080/1351...

Witkoff and Carlson talk about Europe exactly as Russian television propagandists do. Must dismiss the rich functional democracies where people lead long happy lives so that our own citizens settle for tawdry and impoverishing fascist oligarchy.

🚨Why do masses support democratic backsliding?🚨 A new @AJPS_Editor paper with Yotam Margalit, @liorsheffer.bsky.social and Itamar Yakir explores this question in the Israeli context. Our findings emphasize the role of leader attachment and affective polarization. doi.org/10.1111/ajps...

Universities are strong and fragile institutions. At the same time. We need them to be strong now. Don’t cave.

We are sending people for indefinite detention without trial at a foreign gulag because they have tattoos about soccer teams and about loving their mothers.

Remember when people used to say the warnings about Trump were alarmist? He’s now explicitly saying US citizens who damage private property that’s linked to one of his oligarch cronies will be sent to prisons in El Salvador.

Current situation w/NIH cuts & state-level efforts targeting mRNA vaccines might land us in dangerous feedback loop, where distrust fomented by health agencies breeds anti-vaccine laws reinforcing that distrust. My latest @opinion.bloomberg.com (thanks to @mattmotta.bsky.social for insights!) 🎁 link
