🦆 My new R package {avilistr} is live on CRAN! 🎉 The first unified global bird taxonomy (11,131 species) is now accessible to #rstats users. I built it this weekend after Cornell Lab's AviList release last week! 🪿 Blog: www.dalyanalytics.com/blog/avilist... 💻 GitHub: github.com/dalyanalytic...

Did you ask for a bird fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. 🪶 Happy Friday!

NEW PAPER: immune differences in Eurasian hoopoes are linked to migratory behaviour in two partially migratory populations - resident birds show more stable body features than migrants and a different adaptive immune response. ➡️ vist.ly/3n7c8h4 #ornithology #ecoimmunology #migration #birds

Calling all LGBTQIA+ folks who've worked in nature-related jobs! My friend in the US does incredible work hosting events to connect LGBTQIA+ youth with nature, and is looking for advice for youth 12-17 interested in nature careers. If you'd like to contribute please message me, TIA!! 💙🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Today is #WorldAlbatrossDay, which was established to raise awareness of the threats facing these incredible birds and their environments. If you're interested in learning more, check out The Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) website here: acap.aq ! 🪶

New PhD position in our group! Join us to study gull foraging ecology at sea using GPS and accelerometry data! You will be working here Amsterdam Movement Ecology group under supervision of @judyshamounb.bsky.social, @rooskentie.bsky.social and me. Apply here werkenbij.uva.nl/en/vacancies...

Just your annual Pride month reminder that true Allyship is not something you get to declare or claim about yourself without doing the work; it's something that you constantly have to prove and is judged by the members of the marginalized community, not by you

So amazing to see #ICCB2025 has kicked off and our language accessibility measures have been described. Live English transcription & translation into 60 languages is working properly. 39 people has already used it in 10 languages. If you are at #ICCB2025, please give it a try! #languagebarriers

26 species in 2 hours from one spot at Tenney Park this morning! Huge thanks to Feminist Bird Club of Madison for another awesome stationary birding collab. Perfect weather, great people, and Bird Joy all around. Birding is for everyone! 🌈

When I moved to Scotland in 2020 I began studying/watching birds, and especially loved watching the fulmars raise their chicks in the summer, which made me apply to my current PhD project. So when I come back to St Andrews the first thing I do is go to the fulmar colony that started it all 💙

Saw my HOS at a cafe this morning and he seemed genuinely shocked that I didn't smile and wave back to him, like bro you've ignored my emails about transphobia for 2+ years and said you didn't care if I died, I'll wave when you treat me like a human being (although I'm not holding my breath)

🦠 SAVE THE DATE! 🦜 I'm excited to announce that the theme of the 2027 BOU conference is Avian Disease Ecology! 📍 Nottingham, UK 📅 6–8 April 2027 🔗 Full details: lnkd.in/gPvFFDJe Please share widely! #BOU2027 #Ornithology #WildlifeDisease #AvianDisease #EcoHealth

Hallooo, are you looking for a really cool MSc project in bioacoustics/evolution of communication/linguistics? Help me process our goldmine of birdsong recordings, and investigate whether and how conformance to various linguistic laws varies in the Anthus genus! 🔊 🐦🎵 docs.google.com/document/d/1...

I'm coining the term "puffin fever" to describe whatever it is about seeing a single puffin at seabird colonies that makes middle aged men who know nothing about birds then mansplain to everyone coming to the nature reserve after them about where to find the puffins

Nothing will stitch up the heart quite like the noise, chaos, and beauty of a #seabird colony 😍 (Best part for me is always the fulmars but black-backed gull chicks were a close second)

@uniofaberdeen.bsky.social has the nerve to knowingly let its staff bully, harass, and attack trans people and refuses to abide by its own Transgender Equality Policy, then raises a Pride flag as if that erases the trauma and harm they continue to cause

The 2026 federal budget proposes eliminating the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area, threatening bird banding, research, and conservation nationwide, endangering 100+ years of vital ecological data. www.aba.org/proposed-bir...

After 2 years and ~1000 papers, I'm nearing the end of my broad-scale #synthesis thesis chapter! However there are still papers I can't access, if anyone has access to these journals (papers listed in link) and could send them to me, I would greatly appreciate it!! 🪶 docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Do I have any #bird photography friends on here that wouldn't mind me using one of their photos as the banner on a flyer for a virtual talk I'm putting together for Stand Up for Science? Ideally of female birds. Thanks so much in advance!

🚨 URGENT RESPONSE CALL 🚨 Trump’s Fool’s Gold Science EO is a dangerous sham. It gives his appointees the power to dismiss entire bodies of research and punish researchers who fail to fall in line with his agenda. We’ve launched an open letter. SIGN & SHARE NOW: actionnetwork.org/petitions/op...

Was working on assignments for my children's book illustration course at a cafe and a little girl asked to see it, which then prompted all the kids around us to come over and see it, and they were very gracious critics; always helpful to get feedback from the experts 😊

Happy Female Bird Day! Female Bird Day is held annually during the last weekend of May and represents a growing movement to elevate awareness of female birds in ornithology, conservation, and birding.

You've got ~a week left to pre-order our collab w/@franzanth.bsky.social, Bigger Than Binaries! I'll order some extras in orange in a limited size range because I lack a warehouse, I have only a room full of lizards. Printed locally on 100% cotton. Get 'em while you can! squidfacts.bigcartel.com

Out this week: a short review co-authored with @katrina-siddiqi.bsky.social on same-sex partnerships in birds! 🐦🌈 Borne out of a shared frustration: why are these partnerships often ignored or actively removed from our datasets? 1/n doi.org/10.1002/jav....

Crows were the first bird I ever studied (and the ones that got me into birding) and hold a special place in my heart. So no matter how bad I feel, seeing them always makes me feel better. This one joined me in the gardens today to show off its beautiful flight feathers and various vocalizations 🖤

🚨New Paper Out!🚨 We found that juvenile herring gulls in groups were less neophobic (quicker to eat & spent more time near novel objects) than individuals tested alone🤝 🎉 Read the preregistered report, led by Sophia Knoch & Reinoud Allaert, here: doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

The US Geological Survey Ecosystems Mission Area manages the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and oversees the Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL), two resources critical to #ornithologists. Join a virtual rally to support these programs: www.mobilize.us/nwf/event/79...

Today is our dept's Research Day, a really cool event where students share their research. However every year I have to miss it because my existence triggers transphobes and they're becoming more hostile; feeling major FOMO and wishing I could talk about fulmars without being told I'm not human

Working in academia I try to celebrate even the smallest wins, and sometimes you just need to get yourself some "simply made it through this week" flowers

Every semester when we're asked to fill out the PGR experience survey for @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social it's so frustrating because they ask how welcome we feel here and I have to be like "well staff joke I'm not human and should kill myself" and each time they do nothing

Got stuck in an intense period of neurodivergent hyperfocus at the library overnight and only realized it at 6am, but at least it meant I got to take a lovely birding walk through the quiet campus before going to work completely sleep-deprived 😅

We are hiring a chair/professor in our Ecology & Enviro Modelling group at @uniofstandrews.bsky.social. Scotland is lovely, and my colleagues are fantastic! Reach out if you are interested in joining the CREEM family ☺️ Working link this time 👇 www.vacancies.st-andrews.ac.uk/Vacancies/W/...

¡Empecé esta semana un curso de Illustra Ciencia sobre ilustración para libros infantiles! Con muchas ganas de aprender a ilustrar mejor, y hacerlo en español (¡mi segundo idioma!) 🎨🦇

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨 WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people. 4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic. Get 'em Squidfacts.bigcartel.com

Had SO much fun presenting to five classrooms of enthusiastic second graders about seabirds today for @skypeascientist.bsky.social ! They asked such great questions and it made my heart happy to see how keen they were after to keep learning about seabirds and how we can protect them!
