It's weird that the lesson we have to keep learning over and over again is that life is not Star Wars.

Where the party at buds?

the year is 2029. i start my work day by logging into the authentication app and plugging a six digit code from my phone into the computer. after repeating this process 300 more times for every application and website i use, i am finally ready to get to work. it is now 5pm and time to go home

Weird... I did the reading and it looks like the only thing that actually stopped fascism was firebombing their cities and invading their countries with tanks.

“An irony of our technological advancement is that it has created a society that is in many ways scientifically more naïve than the preindustrial world.”

“They will be hearers of many things and will have learned nothing; they will appear to be omniscient and will generally know nothing; they will be tiresome company, having the show of wisdom without the reality.”

The new Silent Spring:

It was an honor to be the keynote speaker at South Bend's United Religious Community National Day of Prayer Breakfast. I talked about the dangers of optimism, and how in order to do good work in bad times, we actually need pessimism. www.wndu.com/2025/05/01/n...

“The ongoing global coral bleaching event is the biggest to date,” NOAA scientists said.

“We can’t afford a utopian notion of individual fulfillment, of achieving an ideal society; it’s simply too dangerous. First of all, such a goal is overreaching, and second, under current conditions it can lead straight to destruction—by raising people’s expectations instead of moderating them.”

Great to see Francisco Robles’s Coalition Literature in my mailbox. This book puts together some broken shards of a US literary history fired in the kilns of the late thirties and helps me see how to embrace a “collective” dimension of our aesthetic politics. @franciscondine.bsky.social

"In this stark and unflinching book, [Scranton] shows that the global elite's reliance on technological fixes and economic growth only produces misleading and dangerous delusions." — @amitav.bsky.social IMPASSE due out in August from @stanfordpress sup.org/books/impasse

"Global temperature leaped more than 0.4°C (0.7°F) during the past two years, the 12-month average peaking in August 2024 at +1.6°C relative to the temperature at the beginning of last century (the 1880-1920 average)." www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

"Roy Scranton has written an elegant and elegiac mediation on climate change. Literary, philosophical, and by turns fiercely political and searingly personal, Impasse is an extraordinary book." —Wendy Brown, author of IN THE RUINS OF NEOLIBERALISM www.sup.org/books/impasse

"Roy Scranton is one of the few essential environmental writers," writes Dale Jamieson. "In this wise and learned book, he pleads for us to leave behind the happy talk, denial, and climate 'solutionism' of the last half century." IMPASSE due out on August 5 sup.org/books/impasse

As global warming accelerates out of control, I'm grateful for every increasingly rare chance I get to go out on my skis. I'm really going to miss winter.

"IMPASSE is far-reaching, compelling, and daringly pessimistic. It confronts what we don't know about the future with unusual honesty and clarity."[email protected] www.sup.org/books/impasse

While I am catching you up, here's a piece that came out last month, thinking through how & why climate denial is tied up with techno-fideism. Thanks to @royscranton.bsky.social for inspiration. academic.oup.com/lril/advance...

"We need a new realism in the face of global climate catastrophe." Coming in August, my next book: IMPASSE: CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE LIMITS OF PROGRESS, from Stanford University Press. www.sup.org/books/impasse

The climate movement gave @royscranton.bsky.social a ton of blowback when he published Learning to Die and We're Doomed, Now What? Called him a doomer. Well, he was right. 1/3 archive.nytimes.com/opinionator....
