Ooo, #LandBeneaththeWaves is in the nature book picks on the @theguardian.com and @thetimes.com bookshops. #booksky #naturewriting

The mountain view from the back of where we stayed in Prespa. Noisy sparrows & a fluting golden oriole. Am missing the songs of nightingale and golden oriole, but enjoying our sparrows and blackbirds.

Such a pleasure speaking with the wonderful David Freeman about LIFELINES for The Author Archive podcast yesterday, which is now online and available to listen to here. davidjohnfreeman.podbean.com/e/julian-hof...

Quitting the Today programme and Twitter at basically the same time has really changed my relationship with the news. I quite often do not know the main story at a given moment, something which was previously unthinkable. But, as a result, my knowledge base is much broader.

A late afternoon walk along a nearly deserted beach. View from the steps at Shep’s Hollow & you can hear the trickle of the stream as it heads to join the sea.

Sounds of summer over the meadows as grasshoppers chirp & skylarks sing over the waving grasses.

Unexpected rare Prespa cattle and water buffalo on Agios Achillios wait for it … We later saw the water buffalo happily deep in the water munching among the reeds

In bed stupidly early because I was up stupidly early and it has all suddenly caught up. Thrush outside my window: IS NOW A NOW A GOOD TIME TO TELL TIME TO TELL YOU YOU ALL ABOUT MY ALL ABOUT MY DAY?

The terminally online mind cannot comprehend this

Unexpected Hermans tortoise in bagging area. Here in the long grass on Agios Achillios Island but several times had to swerve to avoid one crossing road.

Did you wash your hair this morning? Then you've Dean Mahomed, the "Shampooing Surgeon" to thank. Born in India in the 18th century, he fought in the British army under an Irish man, Captain Baker, who encouraged him to move to Cork, where he fell in love with an Irish woman, Jane...

Wonder if Rory Stewart @rory-stewart.bsky.social @therestpolitics.bsky.social has read Karen Hao’s book on Open AI “Empire of AI”? How do you justify the huge environmental footprint energy, water & the impact on local communities of *all* your AI searches? www.penguin.co.uk/books/460331...

I have just found out that it was #NationalPigeonAppreciationDay yesterday. Although a day late, here's my favourite pigeon shot #Birds🪶

I think this episode of Past Present Future 👇🏼 gives a great explanation on the Bad Ideas behind austerity @alastaircampbell2.bsky.social @restispolitics.bsky.social & why Rory Stewart is so congenitally wedded to small-state (= low spending). podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/p...

Inside the ruins of the 10th Century Byzantine Church of Agios Achillius on the Island of Agios Achillios in the middle of Little Prespa Lake. The island was the seat of 10th C Bulgarian Tsar Samuel. A peaceful spot, home to many birds, a nightingale sings throughout.

We loved being in Greece but home has an immense amount of things to celebrate and enjoy with @ruthlampard.bsky.social

Learning about myalgic encephalomyelitis really changed me. The full depth of suffering associated with this horrific illness is right out in the open for anyone to read about and/or to develop themselves, and our society seems to have decided to address the problem solely by stigmatising patients

Pelicans commute below the hill at Great Prespa Lake

With thunderstorms and lightning expected for some places tonight, here's a website where you can watch the lightning strikes being recorded in near-real time. It's already looking lively on the other side of the English Channel! www.lightningmaps.org

You've been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who is coming to save you? Always ready for an intervention by Sherlock.

There is so, so much good science being shared and discussed on bsky right now. The news of its demise is quite backwards. If you are having trouble finding it among all of the very important political news, use the papersky feed that filters posts you follow to just papers: bsky.app/profile/pape...

Just starting @horatioclare.bsky.social “We Came By Sea: Stories of a greater Britain” A must-read after his interview on #R4Today & a rare opportunity to hear these voices and stories - an antidote to “popular press” and “easy-living” (cf challenging & truthful) journalism.

Before the rebuild, we recorded inside the chapel at Abney Park, with just the pigeons for company, Episode 68 - Birdsong in rain from inside the chapel (42mins) > bit.ly/LenAbnY4 #NationalPigeonDay

Little Prespa Lake, a view from a little further away from our village. Great Reed Warblers, frogs and cicadas are the core of the chorus.

Mary Oliver reads "When I am Among the Trees" 🌳

My neighbour’s garden has been mowed every week for years. It’s currently between owners & 10 orchids have taken their chance to flower - looks like Southern Marsh / Common Spotted (or mixture) 🤩 hopefully the new owners appreciate them.. @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

Snatch of nightjar churring from last night in Stainburn Forest, North Yorkshire (sound up). Good views of a displaying pair with wing clapping etc. Also a cuckoo, redstart, and several woodcocks (making their usual weird noises). #UKbirding

A rare holiday abroad with @iantattum.bsky.social we took our time. Will post a video a day, to share & remember with thanks to all who made us so very welcome. #Hospitality This is Little Prespa Lake, the view across the road from where we were staying. Where Greece, Albania & FYROM meet.

Please share :)

While we wait for more details on the London-bound plane which crashed in Ahmedabad, our thoughts are with all affected including those in the UK who have friends or family travelling from India today. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c8...

It's #PublicationDay for #LandBeneaththeWaves! Thank you to everyone who made it possible. Can't wait to celebrate at my #Hitchin launch tonight. Pls report any sightings & let me know how it's behaving in the wild! Here's the aquatic edition... @summersdalebooks.bsky.social #booksky #naturewriting

Back home in the sunshine yesterday rain and murk today. Greenery is soaking up the drenching rain with a sigh. A lull in the downpour …

#R4Today needs to hear from a far wider range of voices like Hortatio Clare. There are many researchers, writers and practitioners who can tell a better & truer story about our country than what we here from Opinion mongering “Think Tanks” This is now existential for the BBC

Cracking interview on #R4Today from @horatioclare.bsky.social first time I’ve heard a deep and informed challenge to the charged “migrant problem” narrative and a gentle but incredibly firm pushback against Nick Robinson who tried to discount truth about refugees as “opinion” …
