This is a physical course but an online version will be available for those who can’t attend. We especially encourage students from African institutions to join online as this is offered as part of the African BioGenome Project Open Institute East&Central Africa Regional Workshop

Is there any papers discussing why different selection scan method does not overlap with each other a lot, especially FST versus XP-EHH? #popgen

There is a limited online version of this course for people who wants to learn analysing NGS data with recommended instructors with great records of research in population genomics of wild animals and humans πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ You should join! Only need internet connection and fluency in English πŸ˜ƒ #consgen #popgen

We sequenced and analyzed the world's rarest large mammal, the #saola πŸ¦„. That turned into a cool paper substantially increasing what we know about this elusive animal, its evolutionary history, population structure, and long-term decline. Check it out here πŸ‘‡ www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

The Research Council of Finland is planning a new funding call to help universities recruit international experts to Finland. The call has a preliminary total budget of 50 million€, which will be granted for recruitment supporting the research profiling of Finnish universities between 2026 and 2030.

About 15-20 yrs ago, a bunch of reviews (inc. 1 by me) made predictions about the future of genomics in conservation. 1 yr ago at ICISB, Robin Waples assessed which of those predictions had been fulfilled. Sam May & Sam Rosenbaum now led the effort to turn this into a review: doi.org/10.1111/mec....

Anyone knows any QC pipeline for PacBio data as well as pipeline for de novo assembly? #consgen #popgen

Help! Is anyone else finding batch effects between whole genome sequences generated with Illumina NovaSeq6000 vs NovaSeqX? Any suggestions or solutions would be hugely appreciated! πŸ™ #PopGen #ConGen #Bioinformatics #Genomics 🧬πŸ–₯️πŸ§ͺ

New #popgen tools I found that use a likelihood method to mitigate small sample size problem when calculating IBD that can be great for #consgen purposes: www.nature.com/articles/s41... This has Windows implementation as well as Linux and Mac! Let me know if anyone has tried this :D

Are you an evolutionary/population geneticist in Denmark? The EPIC conference is back and it will take place on 11-12 August 2025 in Aarhus. Come along for two days of great talks and networking! #EPICdk25 Hosts: @molbiolau.bsky.social & @popgendk.bsky.social Register now at: popgen.dk/epic/

I'm looking forward to this seminar! Tune in to hear a bit about our work uncovering the evolutionary dynamics of genomic erosion www.erga-biodiversity.eu/post/genomic... #popgen #consgen @hologenomics.bsky.social

In addition to EVERY-FUCKING-THING ELSE The most vital of tools, the Biodiversity Heritage Library, is apparently homed at the Smithsonian. For obv reasons, the Smithsonian cannot retain it For free, you can access biodiversity-related texts going back to the 1400s! www.biodiversitylibrary.org

Buso et al. studied parallel selection in two domestic lineages of Atlantic salmon. Shared sweeps in MHC genes suggest combined long-term balancing selection and recent domestication selection. πŸ”— doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... ✏️ P. Buso @marie-saitou.bsky.social #evobio #molbio

An equal world means all countries must apply for visa to go everywhere or all countries must open border for every country. No in betweens.

My first experience flying to the US is already unpleasant with immigration officers that has no regards of how we could not afford to miss a connection singling my bag out just because I say I am a researcher. This is even without Trump in the office.

Interested in a project in the intersection of ancient DNA and Deep Learning for characterizing genetic variation? Do send a DM. Thank your for your RT!

Anyone has a good recommendation of methods to detect selection in admixed populations (so can disentangle regions that is introgressed), that can work if the two ancestral populations has FST >0.1? All available methods from human genomes I know are not very good with divergent species :/ #consgen

Do you really have to be jerks to excel in Academia? I just noticed this pattern that people can grow to become increasingly unlikeable the faster they ascend the career ladder, measured by the position's seniority & the number of grants secured. This happened irrespective of culture & country.

I am looking to train my skills in either eDNA, aDNA, or RNA-seq for conservation genomics and appreciate if there is any #consgen opportunity I can apply to, grant, postdoc, or any kinds of that 🫢🏼

All mid- and senior-level academics who takes their time to chat with a rando who you have never met before, who is trying to pursue an idea and looking for expertise, I admire you and wish you all the best with your work and all success with your career.

At the end of busy week I’m reflecting on the highly partial coverage devoted by the media to different issues. Massive coverage this week on a farm demo, but a far larger demonstration on Nature in June got hardly anything. Both about land. Why might that be? amp.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Popgen folks, we should come up with some simple TSV format for contains the locations of putative sweeps, and self-organize a simple database on Github of what has been discovered with new methods. We need more public data goods like this.

Does any one have any examples of circular reasoning in ecology or evolution that was eventually righted by the field? Like, we all thought this, but then we realized it was a tautology? πŸ§ͺ #PhilosophyOfScience

Apparently you should not use D-statistics to infer ancient introgressions across species with different mutation rates as this way of doing it violate the method's assumptions. Be careful people πŸ‘€ #consgen academic.oup.com/sysbio/artic...

Should you translocate a population to another? First check if the two is locally adapted! This will be great if followed up by an ecological study to get the fitness effect of the phenotype. Do certain alleles actually mate more frequently? #consgen conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Many of the issues faced by myself, my friends, and my colleagues is not because of 'science'. It's because of the systemic issues within academia: job insecurity, low wages, lack of jobs, rampant bullying, and toxic work environments.

Sorry, this editorial is just false. Science is political in theory and practice. And for the President of the National Academy of Sciences to write an editorial saying "science, at its most basic, is apolitical" and publish it anywhere other than The Onion is a failure of humanities education. πŸ§ͺ
