When warnings of Insectageddon were issued a few years ago, there was widespread denial. Less so now. It's devastating. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The wild thing about having a macro camera, is that any ordinary suburban yard, after a little rain, has an explosion of life, and the camera lets you capture it. That insignificant speck of colour at your feet in your yard, likely looks amazing magnified a bit! Photos from my 2 metre walk today :)

This is unconscionable. At the previous election, Labor were all talk about environmental issues. Now they're not even pretending to care.

Right now in Australia we have massive floods in large areas and a record-breaking drought in others. Australia has always had a variable climate, but climate change is intensifying it. Meanwhile, the environment minister is poised to approve more fossil fuels. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

Ok, @albomp.bsky.social, there's never been a better time to do what's long overdue and you have a very supportive senate now. Please just get this done, every day of delay sees further harm that we all suffer the consequences of. theconversation.com/australians-...

Feeling bogged down or mired in anxiety? Consider that boglands, once equated to wastelands of misery, offer beauty and innovation. These treasures protect history as they control our climate future. With internal strength built one peat layer at a time, bogs control vast landscapes. Love the bogs.

A recent paper claims, opposed to what conservation science has known for decades, that there is no evidence that foxes and cats were a major driver of Australia's mammal extinctions. Turns out there are quite a few issues here. Strap in for a looong thread ๐Ÿงช academic.oup.com/bioscience/a...

A Cataractispora-like species from submerged wood. Found it only once since 2003. Likely a new species since it has a really long pedicillate ascus. I have no sequence data, so...cant describe it as new.

My latest pub explores a few potential implications that fungi could have in policy! If your interested, hereโ€™s a thread ๐Ÿชก๐Ÿงต sciencepolicyreview.pubpub.org/pub/av7npje2...

Re: de-extinction It does feel like there are an awful lot of organisms out there that are very threatened but arenโ€™t actually extinct yet. Doesnโ€™t it make more sense to start by protecting them, if the goal is actually ecological integrity and not a weird self-aggrandizing techno-grift?

TIME's cover story this week is about using genetic engineering to bring back a recently-extinct species. I don't know the technical details of this case, which may or may not be as awesome as it sounds. But some thoughts on this topic in general as a conservation biologist: ๐Ÿงต ๐Ÿงช๐ŸŒŽ

Australia is in an extinction crisis, and our research shows that the vast majority of Australiansโ€”96%โ€”say more action is needed to protect Australiaโ€™s natural environment. So why aren't the major parties treating this as an important election issue? @australia.theguardian.com champ.ly/VNDHv79P

96% of Australians want more done to protect nature. Meanwhile, just 0.06% of the budget went to on-ground biodiversity programs. Weโ€™re losing species we love & major parties are sleepwalking through it. Australians care. Itโ€™s time politicians did too. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
