Just saw that Michael Friedman died recently. When it comes to history of Kant to the end of the logical positivists, and philosophy inspired by those figures, I really don't know of anyone better.

Another one for my planned 'applying #neurodiversity to animals' paper which I keep saying I will get around to one day

Part three of my attempt to review every paper published on self-diagnosis in psychiatry. Another four papers reviewed: #psychiatry #selfdiagnosis #psychology #STS #HPS

Well, for better or worse, the word phenomenology is turning up more in the stuff I write (epistemology of) #expertbyexperience (research) #selfdiagnosis

Excellent article: "Rethinking psychiatric symptoms: the role of measurement heterogeneity in diagnostic validity." Shows that different ways of measuring a symptom can be picking up on quite different things, and considers when this is and is not problematic. #Philsci #Philpsy #Psychiatry

If anyone is in #Lancaster and wants to learn about the philosophy of science, I am doing this public philosophy event on "Does science accurately describe reality?". 28th and 29th of May. All welcome, no prior knowledge of philosophy required. Details below: #publicphilosophy #philosophy #philsky

Doing a deep read of Carnap has been on my to do list for... a rather long time. Anyway, there is a youtube channel dedicated towards understanding Carnap today. www.youtube.com/@reconstruct...

There is a forthcoming book named Contemporary Philosophy of Autism. I have a chapter in it named 'Autism, the Double Empathy Problem and Feelings the Emotions of Another Person'. #Philsky #Philpsy #Autism #Empathy www.routledge.com/Contemporary...

Very happy to finally have my own copy of this. I’ve already read many of these interviews, but happy to have them all in one place. @awaisaftab.bsky.social @viscidula.bsky.social @drrobertchapman.bsky.social @samfellowes.bsky.social

"since his death a half-century ago, Cassirer's reputation has suffered a precipitous decline" (Gordon, Continental Divide, 2010). Yeah, well some of us are trying to fix that.

These are the very last hours to register for a IAPIS talk by Nick Haslam. Please use: forms.gle/eeVNeWNSMQ96... @lisabortolotti.bsky.social @sameihuda.bsky.social @awaisaftab.bsky.social @matthewbroome.bsky.social @philosofacespin.bsky.social @samfellowes.bsky.social @drkhan-do.bsky.social

My new book is now available, it is open access. I portray psychiatric diagnoses as being scientific despite not being natural kinds. I seek a middle ground between realism and constructivism by drawing upon various Kantian thinkers, especially Cassirer. #Philsci #Philpsy #Psychiatry #STS #Philsky

"these modified creatures would be regarded as freaks by other elephants and rejected by other members of their herd". I suspect some of us will be able to relate to this #autism

With all the cuts to temporary contracts I have zero philosophy teaching but I am lucky enough to have some teaching in the medical school, though it is just three one hour seminars. Having just done a seminar it reminds me of how much I enjoy teaching and how much it improves my mental health.

Part 2 of my attempt to review every paper on self-diagnosis in psychiatry. I've also re-uploaded part 1 to fix the audio. #Psychology #Psychiatry #Self-diagnosis

This looks rather interesting:

My new book chapter, Philosophical Issues Raised by Autism: Sociality, Explanations, Heterogeneity, and Neurodiversity, in the Handbook of the Philosophy of Medicine. #autism #neurodiversity #philmed #philpsy #philsci #sts

Does anyone have a nearby copy of Fitzgerald's book Tracing autism : uncertainty, ambiguity and the affective labor of neuroscience? I would like to check which specific words are in italics on page 149. #autism #neuroscience #sts

Spectrum 10K has been cancelled. I was in a minority of autistic people who actually thought that studying gene to social environment relationships could have been a useful tool for improving the lives of autistic people but the community had spoken. #autism 1/3 autisticltd.co.uk/2025/01/30/c...

There is an online workshop called "Psychiatric Diagnosis – Empirical and Philosophical Perspectives" on the 21st of February. I will be presenting on "How self-diagnosis relates to categorical and dimensional approach to psychiatric diagnoses". #philpsy #philmed #philsci #selfdiagnosis

I review 'The Brain Abstracted - Simplification in the History and Philosophy of Neuroscience'. I outline its neo-Kantian account of model building in neuroscience and I draw implications for psychiatric diagnoses and neurodiversity #philsci #philpsy #neuroscience #psychiatry #neurodiversity

Even if we give Musk a charitable reading that he is just being a troll it still passes my threshold. Had not posted on twitter/X since October, was not sure what to do with it, but now deactivated.

I'm not sure what the modern social justice movement could have done to engage in (to my mind highly justified) activism without then other people having a Trump style reaction to it. Might be worth thinking how we might prevent such a reaction occurring in relation to #neurodiversity. #autism #adhd

I have a belief which is pretty controversial in some strands of modern philosophy and psychology, namely that most people have low self-understanding, but it is my best explanation of how the oldest democracy in the world has elected someone who does not believe in climate change.* 1/3

I usually only post about academic stuff but I do have other interests as well, such as my guinea pigs!

With TikTok being banned it will be interesting to see if this influences self-diagnosis. Critics claim that much of self-diagnosis consists of adolescents self-diagnosing after watching TikTok, so there would presumably be an impact if this were true (I have no idea if it is true, I have never 1/2

Why Walker is wrong to say notions of a normal brain is scientifically illegitimate: “No two brains... are really identical, but for the purpose of building theories and models that predict and explain responses, individuality must be blurred out and a uniformity of categorizations must be imposed”

New podcast episode where I use philosophy of empathy to explore the double empathy problem, considering where it applies and how it relates to neurodiversity. This is a new recording of my presentation I gave at Tilburg last month #autism #philmed #doubleempathyproblem
