Possibly a controversial opinion…but can journals please go back to using images generated from our #science- rather than commissioned art? (I know young PIs who are paying $$ for this!!). #scientificpublishing #STEM 🤦‍♀️

Very excited to share the first preprint from the lab: www.biorxiv.org/cgi/content/... We investigated neural crest migration all the way from head to tail of the Zebrafish embryo and we found their nuclei suffer dramatic deformations. Want to know of they cope with feeling squeezed? 🐟🐠🐟

A distinct isoform of Msp300 (nesprin) organizes the perinuclear microtubule organizing center in adipocytes #Drosophila

Researchers from @biozentrum.unibas.ch developed a new method to phosphorylate endogenous Myosin in a light-inducible manner that achieves specificity and precise temporal control. Learn more about this #optogenetics and proteomics #Drosophila toolbox in #G3journal: buff.ly/jlINw2g

Andy Moore @hhmijanelia.bsky.social created this video showing a cytoskeletal mechanism called an actin wave in a so-called HeLa cell. In orange are the actin filaments and in blue are the mitochondria, some of which appear to move with or be shifted by the active wave.

Wonderful to watch @brettcollins.bsky.social giving his @anzscdb.bsky.social President’s Medal talk. So well deserved! #HunterMeetingOz 🧪

We are offering an exciting project for aspiring clinical scientists! Cytoskeletal Dynamics in Circulating Tumour Cells from Breast Cancer Patients! Don't miss this opportunity to work at the interface between fundamental and clinical science @icr.ac.uk 😀! www.icr.ac.uk/study-and-ca...

Registration is now open, come join us in beautiful Zadar (Croatia) in September for Adhere2. event.fourwaves.com/adhere2/pages

My neighbor's cat sleeps over often (his choice) and at this point should be paying rent. Just look at the state of this freeloader.

A big thank-you to @melaniedwhite.bsky.social and @vessel-integrity.bsky.social for their beautiful images on our banner- long time #HunterMeetingOz supporters. #Avian #Zebrafish #DevBio

🧪 Detailed data viz NYT article, out today, on the extent of funding cuts at the National Science Foundation. This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Am starting to get emails from biomedical suppliers telling me that prices are going up in response to Trump's tariffs. This is on top of the increases in microscope prices. But according to Trump, China and Europe are supposed to eat the costs... and Walmart too apparently. <NATIONAL FACEPALM>

We have 2 fully-funded PhD studentships (for UK students) available at MMU starting October 2025. Closing date: 18 May 2025 One is with me and Dr Jim Pritchett: How do force sensing proteins contribute to the progression of liver fibrosis? . www.mmu.ac.uk/study/postgr...

NIH-funded basic research allowed me to discover two molecules (COX-2 and S1PR1) that became drug targets - COX-2 inhibitors and S1PR modulators - more than 7 million prescriptions for Celebrex taken for pain; >350k people have taken Fingolimod/Ozanimod for MS and IBD/UC-basic research is essential!

A team of geneticists have determined why we are orange. It’s because some boring parts of our DNA got holes in it so the awesome can shine out. At least that’s my interpretation gizmodo.com/orange-you-g...

I think of this comment on occasion. Especially when I’m asked to give career talks. My failed 2013 #ARC DECRA. Another assesor said I had limited awards- when I had many - not to mention I was an American Heart Fellow. 1/3

Finally got around to doing some analysis on what reapplying #NHMRC investigator grant holders* are having on the scheme. L2/L3 heavily impacted, with ~70% of the 2025 round going to previous winners. Food for thought for 1st timers trying to get in *dependent on identical names across rounds.

🚨📣 New preprint alert! Excited to share my new postdoc work on direct force and mechanical properties measurements in live embryos! A great team effort with A. Chamolly (theory), under the supervision of F. Corson and @jeromegros.bsky.social 📄 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #devbio #mechanics

One of the best things about conferences & particularly #GRC conferences is the relationships you make and continue into your career. Loved catching up with this superstar in Italy @alessandra-cambi.bsky.social (eek our first Grc was in 2010!!).

Currently at the GRC on Fibronectin, Integrins & Related Molecules in Barga, Italy. Sad to see so little US participation, and particularly to see speakers cancel. Current US Government policy is harming scientific progress and hopefully it will be reversed.

Had an amazing time at the Fibronectin-integrin GRC! This community is filled with so many smart and welcoming people as well as cutting - edge science, it was really one of the best meetings I've been to. Thanks again @sarawickstrom.bsky.social @tanentzapflab.bsky.social for organizing!!

Thanks to @tanentzapflab.bsky.social & @sarawickstrom.bsky.social, chairs of an excellent Fibronectin, Integrins & Related Molecules GRC & to @martina-lerche.bsky.social & @mchastney.bsky.social for chairing the GRS. We look forward to Kairbaan Hodivala-Dilke & Tom Barker's 2027 meeting!
