Kudos to Last of Us TV for excising the “you killed a dog in a cutscene, feel bad!” stunt from part 2. Nearly made me quit at the time, felt so cheap for a game that clearly wanted to be taken seriously. Dialing back the cult stuff was also a smart move.

Damn, Doom : Dark Ages really picks up in the second half. I contend that when you’re out of cutscene land and into a string of intricately laid out levels with ominous names, that’s when you know a Doom game is really cooking.

Laying workers off should be more of a source of shame in the games industry. I think they did it a few times and realised there are virtually no consequences and now workers are at the whim of a quarterly report. They hire new staff, lay them off, hire new staff, reshuffle, sell, etc, repeat.

Doom : Dark Ages feels like a stealth re-run at Quake, not so much the game - although it shares some fun level design ideas with it, especially later on - as what I envisioned from / what I remember of the original “you’re a big axe guy” pitch from way back when.
