A meta-analysis of 279 studies found people are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories when they feel uncertain, powerless, or socially excluded. My latest post explores the psychology, and social dynamics, behind conspiracy beliefs. matthewfacciani.substack.com/p/why-people...

I wrote about how keto can set schizophrenia symptoms into remission but I am still very skeptical of that idea, especially since more healthfluencers are boasting about its benefits. What if you suddenly have an episode and eat a pizza to comfort you? Will you relapse? Doesn't make sense.

Realized that I published my 50th post on my blog at Psychology Today about schizophrenia earlier this year. I started the blog about 2.5 years ago, and I got 100,000 views within the first 6 months. Today I have about 200,000. I feel better knowing people need the knowledge, but we need even more.

An article recently published in The Nation got some attention criticizing Internal Family Systems and raised concerns about applying the therapy to patients with psychosis. So I wrote about my experience. I've been using it for about 15 years. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/livi...

In the world of psychiatry there's no need to establish a diagnosis of a specific mental disorder if the person is a danger to self or others. As Trump is clearly a danger to many Americans (both red and blue), not to mention the rest of the world, it's time for him to be hospitalized. Really.

Not sure if there is a lot of research on patients who actively recover long-term (decade or more) and what their habits and behavioral/physical symptoms are. I've noticed repeated waves of intense physical sickness coinciding with mental change where negative thoughts were reversed at the end.

Excited to share that I’m now writing for Psychology Today! It’s a great opportunity to discuss misinformation and media literacy research with a broader audience. www.psychologytoday.com/us/contribut...

I was always told by mentors to keep my "good" ideas to myself before publication but lately it feels pretty pointless as someone who doesn't nor possibly can ever have a real job in academia. Have been taking up an absurdist stance lately and trying at anything feels pointless, including writing.

I would recommend to all of my academic colleagues in America that you now take the time to read the words of scholars who have resisted under violent dictatorship.

There is a tasteless trend of generalist cultural intellectuals who quote mainly 20th century intellectuals without picking up anything within current academia and I'm trying to decide if they're pseudointellectuals at this point.

Cecilia's a good friend of mine I met in my early days of advocacy. She astounded me from the beginning - having a star named after her, studying astrophysics, and founding this organization that is giving us the ability to have these conversations. Watch her TEDx talk below youtu.be/xbagFzcyNiM?...

This podcast will have discussions about the social and personal aspects of living with psychosis, what that means about the stereotype and disorder at large, and the science of mental health. We will interview advocacy leaders, celebrities, academics, and each other.

Collaborating with the Exec Director & founder of Students With Psychosis, previous astrophysicist, and popular schizophrenia advocate, Cecilia McGough and I are bringing new perspectives on what it means to live with dreams when people say you can't have them in Not a Delusion.

Almost 100% of women will experience perinatal intrusions... intrusive thoughts and images of accidental child-related harm. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I am looking for a visual artist living with psychosis for a project. Please send me or your friend's instagram.

This BPD article starts with this awful view: "Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder with a high burden on patients, family members, and health-care systems." The use of words like burden to describe BPD lead to the poor tx many of us face./ www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Had a horoscope email drop in my inbox today and it asked me if I thought about salt being a spiritual substance and I thought Yeah. You know what salt is good? Lithium. That shit's amazing. That's my spiritual salt. Is that what u were thinking?

My good friend Cecilia McGough, founder of Students With Psychosis, and I are up to something special... stay tuned!! More things coming for people experiencing psychosis.

Our documentary focusing on thriving with schizoaffective disorder is now live. Without director Glenn Holsten from @freshfly-films.bsky.social & Gabe Nathan, founder of OC87 Recovery Diaries, this wouldn't have been possible. We want to inspire, motivate, & grow. youtu.be/JfAfq-qp9oI?...

Thanks, @sarahanmy.bsky.social for letting us into your world and the good work you're doing to bring awareness along with improving quality of life. This film also depicts the experience of psychosis in a way that's palpable. youtu.be/JfAfq-qp9oI?...

Milei the new "fascist" president is cutting off funding for a public mental hospital that primarily serves LGBT community. Doctors are no longer working, so citizens have been protesting. I went tonight. "Without workers there is no mental health" 📍Bonaparte Hospital

I'm in Argentina doing research about the de-funding of public mental hospitals and visited the largest one in the country. These are the only shots I got since cameras are technically prohibited. The new Trump-like president of Argentina is ceasing federal aid.

I know NVC is very popular in the self help world but I am starting to think many of these psych strategies are narrow minded. I used NVC since I was a teen (14ish yrs ago) & when I started exploring other cultures people would say I talked too much about myself so yeah... don't really recommend lol

A different kind of post for Psychology Today is up now, where I give personal mottos and mental tips to keep in mind while I recover from schizoaffective disorder. Staying realistic, avoiding peer pressure, practicing self compassion, and more tricks go a long way. www.google.com/amp/s/www.ps...

In undergrad I learned there are data supporting the idea that those with higher psychopathology symptoms are more likely to think & talk about themselves than controls. I wonder just how much this applies in everyday life, and if laymen perceive this self talk as narcissistic.

In addition, I'm soft launching my Patreon. I'm looking for patrons to help fund my work. As a previous academic with schizoaffective disorder, my academic career was cut short. My work abilities are limited, but I'd like to give back in the way that I can. Thank you. www.patreon.com/c/sarahanmyers

I know I primarily use this account for my work in psychology, but I am also branching out into film. I got an MFA in creative writing and took a screenwriting course. My first script had unexpected success in several contests, so I decided I'm producing it! Read more here. gofund.me/d0be3767

@kurtfraser.bsky.social and I just had our paper on dopamine, salience, and psychosis accepted @ Am J Psychiatry. We review the history of aberrant salience and the data gathered since: osf.io/preprints/ps...

An extremely overlooked facet of my story few people pay attention to is that I am the daughter of a Vietnamese refugee. I distinctly remember during near death experiences & early in my recovery I felt a primal survival instinct I never knew I had. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/stre...

Have you ever wondered what it is like to hear voices? Or maybe you could just trade places with a loved one who does, even for a second, to understand them better. We created something like that for you. We are hoping that it will help others. youtu.be/4E05n7yA79Q?...

The "journalist" role has historically hired intellectual generalists who simply know how to write. I've always found this problematic bc generalists often misrepresent the industry's info. So I'm happy for the new interest in "newsfluencers" with passionate expertise who will slowly be taking over.

I do this dance a lot with a few people. Most of the time they do not know but I have met some who do understand how this works. I even met my match when I met a man who started doing this to me. Usually u avoid calling it out bc one of the people is incapable of discussing their behavior.

Intergalactic space travel is an exciting goal, but we should probably learn to get along as a species on our own livable planet before attempting to travel light-years and survive in much harsher environments.

There are few films and subjects who grant the public a glimpse into a psychotic person's hallucinations. For this film preview we are taking you right inside of that experience in the hopes that it will bring clarity and connection. Please watch below. youtu.be/4E05n7yA79Q?...
