Punishing colleges by blocking foreign student enrollment, taxing endowments and making major changes to loans for parents and students is going to force some colleges to close. Small liberal arts schools, many already struggling with enrollment, are most vulnerable. Many are in GOP districts.

We're proud our AI agreement has safeguards for journalists jobs-and company ethics, to allow AI use in a way that works for us, not against us. @politico.com already agreed that AI-generated content should be subject to the same standards as human-written articles. It needs to follow the contract

Hundreds of contracts are stacking up at @noaa.gov. Senior officials need program approval from a Trump-appointed former food hall monitor. Lifesaving weather communications threatened, employees furloughed and agency functionality crippled. Even Ted Cruz is angry. www.eenews.net/articles/bac...

This is basically the plot of The Running Man movie from 1987. The film takes place in the dystopian future of 2017-2019 when a totalitarian government controls the country through propaganda following an economic collapse. (One of two movies released that year featuring two future governors).

NEW: At least two institutions have been directed to comply with Trump’s anti-trans executive order as a condition of getting NIH grants, according to letters I've seen. The policy marks a new front in the administration's efforts to reshape the science ecosystem. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

Energy Sec. Chris Wright claims the solution to global poverty and improved human health is more fossil fuels, even though climate change worsens both. Meet the influencers who form Wright's brain trust and are connected to industry funding and climate denial groups. www.eenews.net/articles/mee...

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

NEW: US weather forecasting is in worse shape than previously known, with 30 NWS forecast offices missing meteorologists-in-charge and about a dozen offices at risk of no longer serving their communities 24/7. www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/w...

NEW from me: Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company is operating 35 gas turbines without any pollution permits, belching asthma-worsening emissions into an area that leads Tennessee in ER visits for asthma. www.eenews.net/articles/elo...

The Trump administration's dismissal of the scientists writing the National Climate Assessment, which is Congressionally mandated, is another step toward the effort to produce federal climate research and reports that highlight doubt over consensus science. www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

Important story by a great reporter, @chelseaeharvey.bsky.social, on how NOAA buried the alarming finding that C02 levels rose at a significant rate last year.

Tesla profits fell a whopping 71% in its earnings reported a short time ago, largely a result of Elon Musk's foray into politics, which he seemed to think would come with minimal impact to his businesses. Tesla investors are concerned company faces existential crisis. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/22/b...

By the time he became a #Florida State University student, the FSU shooter was openly pushing neo-Nazi sentiments, espousing white supremacy & supporting Trump, according to classmates. www.tallahassee.com/story/news/l...

A climate scientist is serving as Trump's "eyes and ears" at NOAA. Erik Noble, who fired scientists and interfered in the National Climate Assessment, is slashing millions of dollars in contracts, working with a Trump loyalist who was a lunch hall monitor a year ago. www.eenews.net/articles/off...

Hard to overstate this plan's reach, which touches nearly every aspect of NOAA's work - dissolving its research arm, gutting climate science, diminishing sat observations, boosting fossil fuels. With amazing colleagues Daniel Cusick and @scottpwaldman.bsky.social : www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

The White House wants to break up @noaa.gov, just as OMB Director Russ Vought proposed in Project 2025. Some work moved to DHS. Climate work phased out. New redirection to boost fossil fuel production. Howard Lutnick falsely claimed this exact plan would not happen. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

The Trump admin axed a key government climate science program because it provided a solid body of research to support public health protections and frustrated industry. The administration is considering a new report touting the "benefits" of global warming. www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

This will be catastrophic for America's colleges and universities. The current class of high school seniors is the peak of applicants. It's downhill now. For years, higher education has relied on foreign students, many of whom pay full tuition. Losing those students is existential for some schools.

At his coal promotion event at the White House, Trump just said he will use the major law firms he bullied into providing $150 million+ in free legal services to fight state and local government regulations on coal pollution.

NEW: NOAA has now backed off a plan to defer maintenance to the satellites that form the backbone of the nation's weather prediction system. The $13 billion satellite program will now be managed rather than fixed after problems emerge.

In a bid to slash as many contracts as possible at NOAA, Trump political appointees went after the maintenance of key satellites that form the backbone of the 3- and 7-day weather forecast and warning system for hurricanes and tornados. www.eenews.net/articles/noa...

This stock plunge is occurring as many parents are now tapping into their 529 accounts to start paying for college. Kids have to decide by the end of the month. Now, 529s have dipped more than 10% in accounts many created more than a decade ago. This drop couldn't be happening at a worst time.

I wrote a personal essay about how American xenophobia and the music of Lambrini Girls led me to swap out the tichel for golden hair. It all starts with the story of the time a GOP congressman from Texas, Jake Ellzey, asked me about my head wrap…

Team Trump has been fantasizing about this for a long time and had actively discussed during 2024 about should trump return to power, to try to dramatically expand polygraph machine use across the federal government to find supposed anti trump subversives www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation for National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, 2025.

In the rose garden, Trump went on an extended rant about how former Chrysler executive Lee Iacocca supported his tariffs. Iacocca died six years ago.

The last 24 hours have been brutal for Elon Musk. Major investors are calling for his ouster from Tesla. Dems have newfound energy running races against him. White House support for Tesla is making his iconic EV company into political brand as MAGA as a red hat. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

I spent the last four months organizing what I believe to be the biggest and best music festival fundraiser for trans rights to ever happen in the US. In Washington DC of all places. Please buy a ticket and spread the word. 😁

Today's Tesla delivery results show the company is doing far worse than expected, largely because of brand damage caused by Elon Musk. I wrote about how that also shows that the Trump White House embrace of Tesla is only making things worse for the company. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene...

Here's a rare piece of good #PFAS news: Yesterday, after nearly a decade of fighting, Hoosick Falls, NY finally got a clean source of drinking water. Not merely a treatment system that removes some PFAS while letting others slip through, as most large-scale system do. 1/ youtu.be/czUifvfuHtE?...

NEW: NOAA operations slowed by mandate for Commerce Secretary to approve ALL contracts/contract extensions above $100,000. This nearly led to a significant deterioration of Nat'l Weather Service operations last night. www.axios.com/2025/04/01/n...

Top Wall Street institutions are prepping for global warming that blows past the Paris Agreement. Trump officials are preparing for "dramatically shrinking" FEMA, which could threaten disaster response at a time when climate change is worsening extreme storms. It would shift the federal response to states, which may not be prepared to handle the challenge. www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

NEW: The National Institutes of Health will no longer be funding work on the health effects of climate change, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica. One climate health expert called the directive “catastrophic.” With @fastlerner.bsky.social: www.propublica.org/article/nih-...
