New guest commentary from Natalie Crawford with @georgiafirst.bsky.social: Georgia can’t afford Medicaid cuts

Georgia is the testing ground for what the GOP wants to do to Medicaid nationally, and it's hellish. Not even 10% of those eligible have obtained coverage, and those who do keep losing it.

Georgia did this with their pathways program. It 1) didn’t work - they have enrolled like .5% of the eligible pop. and 2) it’s insanely expensive - $13000 per enrollee and far more expensive than traditional Medicaid to implement.

Hard to express what a big deal these numbers are. This is just as bad as measles and getting half the attention. www.propublica.org/article/whoo...

A big part of my family hails from Hazard, Kentucky. Hazard tells us how far we’ve come—and where we’re losing ground. This public health week, I'll be thinking a lot about how we can do better by communities like Hazard. open.substack.com/pub/saphl/p/...

Employees of #HHS and its agencies who are being fired — RIF'd — started to receive termination notices today starting at 5 am. Big swaths of the #CDC appear to have been cut. Developing story. www.statnews.com/2025/04/01/h...

Extremely important information from @kff.org on what these Medicaid cuts will look like at the state level. The four state we work in - TN, NC, SC, and GA - stand to lose more than $6 billion! www.kff.org/medicaid/iss...

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Southern Alliance for Public Health Leadership (SAPHL.org), an organization tackling some of the South’s most pressing public health challenges: declining vaccination rates, rising infant and maternal mortality, and inadequate access to quality care.

This will be absolutely devastating for public health in the South. www.wsj.com/health/healt...

I think what is making everyone so angry isn’t just the cowardice of Senate Democrats, it’s their cowardice in comparison to the random normal person who runs for school board to oust a Moms for Liberty freak

I love to call my Senators' offices three times per week and try to cajole them into doing the most elementary political messaging and strategy. This is what it means to be an engaged citizen: leaving a strenuously polite voicemail for a 74yo on a more regular cadence than I talk to my parents.

The only elections Democrats are losing tonight are their own eventual primaries.

Earlier this week, Governing Magazine covered my efforts to encourage local governments to respond to federal layoffs with hiring initiatives. These layoffs disproportionately hurt cities like Atlanta and I'm proud that we're a national leader in this work. www.governing.com/workforce/lo...

If you are a liberal in deep blue territory, one thing you could try doing right now is figuring out how to replace your Democratic member of Congress next year. With very few exceptions, the typical safe seat Dem is not meeting the moment. Find someone who will and help them.

To emphasize the importance of preserving Medicaid, we request that people in high-priority districts call and write their members of Congress who are in areas that have high Medicaid usage and whose reps have competitive seats. A handy list is below; the Capitol Switchboard is (202) 224-3121.

The indiscriminate mass layoffs at the CDC are not only devastating for the affected GA employees and their families, but also for public health at large. From measles, to e-coli, to ebola, the CDC has kept us safe for a very long time. #cdcheroes #gapol #publichealthmatters #speakup

if the president’s lackeys can functionally seize control of treasury funds and dismantle a congressionally-created agency without consequence, it’s not that it’s a constitutional crisis as much as it means the constitution is vapor.

we're going to need independent, authoritative medical statisticians - probably having to compile data down to the level of individual hospitals in red states - to measure the rise in deaths as a result of this, because they're corrupting or removing the data at the federal level

one way to think about the dems in the last 8 years is that they wanted all the electoral benefits of being a popular front against authoritarianism but none of the substantive commitments

If Democrats in Congress keep going the way they’re going, the anti-incumbency wave of 2024 will hit their shores in the form of 2026 primaries.

I went to post about the National Japanese American Memorial in D.C., which is beautiful but usually missed by tourists. It is a deeply staggering admission of guilt and a warning to future Americans. I went to link to the inscriptions and- Well, they took the site down. www.nps.gov/places/japan...

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.

this urge to launder rfk jr. as “just a guy who is right about a few things” is such a perfect example of how liberals are people who won’t take their own side in a fight

i am completely fine with biden pardoning his kid. i have one single complaint about biden and clemency and it's...not this! here are my thoughts:

You likely grew up with many of her songs, the call and response inspired by the long tradition of communal Black music (gift link)

Thinking about how the stereotype of the "slow" southerner came about because so many of them had hookworm Public health is a goddam gem.
