if you need a little break from all the bad news, I've got a new flash out today! it's part of a series inspired by the hypotheticals that parents often pose, i.e. "if you don't ace that test, you'll never get into college," but I spin them out into surreal scenarios. enjoy this moment of escape!

Dad's May 13,1972 commencement address to Ithaca College graduates:

I REALLY hate how academia has just rolled over on this front. “Every industry, is going to be impacted in some way by AI,” said Ohio State President ----> Yeah, most jobs won't exist. Creativity and actual HUMAN innovation will be bludgeoned to death. news.osu.edu/ohio-state-l...

I honestly like that this place isn’t super well-known or great for broader reach. Sure, nothing has replaced Twitter for what it did for a lot of folks, but this place is also, for now, a mostly safe zone to just engage with your specific communities and peers in your field.

was asked for "a list of 5-10 or so recent collections you want to vouch for" and so threw this together, and am counting it as my "writing" for the day

This post at least made me feel better bc I’ve been Google searching “novels with a long act one” to comfort myself 😂 . . . But as I tell my students, it’s as long as it needs to be until you decide that it isn’t.

Whenever someone (like cafe staff) asks me what I’m working on I’ll usually just say “grading” or even more ambiguously “work stuff” bc saying writing or critiquing manuscripts just opens a whole can of worms where awkwardness is the winner.

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

O Portland, I love the vibe of your ICE protests. (From Keep Portland Weird).

Those concerned about violence might want to start with violence against immigrants, by ICE here, by illegal deportations to gulags and third countries, the violence against so many federal departments, against the law, the climate, the public lands, waters, civil rights, reproductive rights...

Exactly this. Go to TikTok. Look at the lives. It’s 400 people OUTSIDE LA, standing outside an ICE facility and they are making the ruling class shake. This is a sign of weakness on the part of the ruler: they are afraid and they can be stopped.

Google Map novel research is reminding me what a dumbass I used to be: In my 20s I'd often walk from Dolores Park down to Alamo Square (where the Full House houses are for the non SF aware) between the hours of midnight and 3am. Several pitch dark streets. I'd casually say hi to the carjackers.

Apparently Zoetrope Virtual Studios is shutting down forever by mid month after 25 years. Like probably a lot of you, this site was a significant resource for me early on and where I found much needed literary community, advice, feedback etc. (esp. when I was living in Japan in the mid 00s).

When you forgot to plan ahead and now this is your carry on 😂

I’m just so glad we don’t have one of those super-emotional women in charge, it would’ve been so embarrassing.

Babe wake up there's a generational crashout to witness

Last draft? We were in Hawai’i for maybe 10 pages. Now? 60+ pages and digging into my own childhood. I thought about how my partner was surprised by how my family spoke with a musical lilt and heavily used Hawaiian Pidgin English, how I pushed away from this early on after I moved to the mainland.

When police say there is no evidence of a hate crime then that means there is a 100% chance that a hate crime took place. That's just how things work in the bizarro universe that we sadly live in.

The smallest silver lining here: those of us with dozens of files like Draft1.doc, Draft1-1.doc, Draft1-1condensed.doc, Draft2.doc, Draft2NEW.doc etc. are finally justified in doing so

Kind of want to use these stamps for any future St. Olaf College business 😂

Tripped over a thread about people who think it's important that LLMs mean you can be friends, in the social and psychological sense, with your computer. This belief is going to create a very weird social gap between people who believe this and people who know it's not (and can't be) a thing.

First USA Today and now NYT including How High We Go in the Dark on a list of Last of Us adjacent reads. Hey, no fungi in my book, but I’d like to think it has the vibes of Pedro Pascal brooding. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/26/b...

then perish.

Last draft? My main character was tooting around in a floating self-driving iridescent egg. In this draft? Her cousin is picking her up at the airport in a junker. Sometimes it’s the grit of a more familiar world that does the hard work of grounding the speculative elements of a book.

There are people who want/need to write and there are people who just want to call themselves writers. The one thing genAI *has* done is made that difference extremely clear.

As a pantser writer who doesn’t write linearly, I have never disagreed more with a fortune cookie fortune, 😁.

2500 words that came easily today . . . and upon a read through doesn't appear to be entirely dog shit. I'll take it. Pouring any negative energy and crap words into this doll head my mother in law got me (yes, she knows me haha). One day it will come to life via the power of thrown away ideas.
