Not sure how we got here. But here we are... www.popsci.com/health/is-mo...

This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

The degree to which some people love to hear themselves talk never ceases to amaze.

say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

In academia we all want to be open minded but I think I’m going to stake out a position of 100% opposed to AI in all situations. This has been my cranky rant for the day.

Must read. Look forward to hearing more from students about this

Great job everyone

Kevin Stitt has this amazing ability to discern what is right so he can do the opposite. Oklahoma Gov. Stitt vetoes bill to bolster OSBI office for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples www.kosu.org/politics/202...

“I asked chatGPT-“ ok, and I asked Tinsel, and she said you’re an uninspired, vapid dork who needs a computer to think for them.

I just really need everybody to understand that everything that’s happening in and to the global economy now (and all the businesses and people in it) is the entirely predictable result of the intentional decisions of one guy who doesn’t understand how the global economy works.

funny how yall were like "a humanities degree?? so employable 🤭" and now you're explaining to me how a machine that can compose vaguely correct-sounding sentences is critical to our economic future

Applications to Villanova are going to go through the roof next year.

I once literally yelled at an episode of Blaze and the Monster Machines that my kid was watching because they didn't include units. An animated car on TV: "We need a torque of 7!" Me: "SEVEN WHAT, BLAZE??? A TORQUE OF 7 WHAT???"

My 15yo reports that while "the dumbasses" brag out loud in front of teachers about using AI for schoolwork, everybody else sees it as a crapbot fucking the environment and producing garbage. These kids are deep in anime and other communities directly adversely affected & they hate it.

Everything you wanted to know about #POGIL but were afraid to ask! I'm helping facilitate a virtual Fundamentals of POGIL workshop May 14 & 15. Other opportunities later in the summer. It will be fun. Come join us! pogil.org/2024-25-publ...

This will sound weird but love yourself enough to write your own term papers.

Quick question for any polymer chemists out there: What's the best way to get homemade slime (made from Elmer's glue, baking soda, and saline solution) out of, well, everything? Thanks.

The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion. Two decades on, it has generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more. If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

$9 billion a year for NSF is absolute chump change. It's nothing. And yet, cutting it will devastate American science for decades. God, we're led by a morons, empowered by idiots.

A reminder that every small bit of good you do - whether it be putting art into the world, helping a friend or stranger, donating to a good cause, or just listening to someone who needs to vent - offsets all the evil in the world just a little bit. And sometimes that's just what the world needs.

“And I’m like, what do you mean, you ‘do your own research’? You running a double-blind study in your living room, dawg?” - A guy walking ahead of me with his friends on a NYC sidewalk in 2021, also my favorite overheard dialogue of the entire pandemic

I've decided my final exam this semester is going to be 50% conceptual questions about the equilibrium constant and 50% quantitative questions about logarithms calculations. That's intro chem 2 in a nutshell.

The fact the markets go up every time Trump says he's not enacting his policies tells us the markets think the Biden economy was pretty good.

I wrote a research note about the recent publication of the MIRI/LRS spectrum of K2-18b. The authors had claimed the detection of potential signs of life. I find the data to be consistent with a flat line 🔭🧪

MY DINNER WITH ANDOR

I keep getting requests for surveys about AI and I’m about to just write a stock response about the existential threat to academia. And civilization.

Let the End Times roll

I'm begging science journalists to learn dose and concentration. "Detected" is useless information, there are atoms of heavy metals in everything. Dose = concentration x amount of toothpaste consumed The AAP recommends less than 1 ppb lead in drinking water. That means if you EAT a teaspoon...

It's really hard to make videos about all of the cool science coming out all of the time. I really appreciate Trump trying to help me out with this problem by making it so no new science comes out ever.

This is so heartbreaking and makes nothing better and no one safer. It is the punitive act of an administration that values fealty over human health.

There is no good time for bad news and today is no different than any day in our recent time. Nevertheless, I write this thread to chemistry faculty job seekers in the United States. #chemjobs #facultychemjobs #chemsky 🧪⚗️

There’s an old joke about how a student has a conflict where the economics exam is at the same time as the chemistry or physics exam and that prof tells the econ prof to do the make-up exam because s/he can ask the same questions but change the answers and I feel like we’re all living in that joke
