The President's Budget request as released yesterday will gut scientific research. Why should you care? 1) Science is fundamentally a jobs program. Many 100,000s are employed to do science and work for you, the US taxpayer.

A novel method for fine‐scale retrospective isotope analysis in mammals using eye lenses - Miura - 2025 - Ecosphere #stableisotopes esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Integrating isoscapes and amino acid δ15N analyses to reveal migration patterns and habitat use of molids in the western Pacific Ocean #stableisotopes www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Would it have killed them to mention the fact that this was due to climate change? @powcanada.bsky.social

Currently doing some eye lens work at the Swedish Museum of Natural History! Anyone want to take a guess at the taxon? 🌍🦑

My friend got a good pic of me with a big smile! #PhDone

I passed my PhD defense 🦈

I am defending my PhD tomorrow for anyone who wants to join! 🦈

🔔BREAKING🔔 The NSF has frozen all research grant awards—cutting off life-saving science midstream and demanding ideological screenings for future funding. This is censorship disguised as oversight. Here’s how you can help us spread the word ➡️🧵(1/3): www.nature.com/articles/d41...

New study links altered fire & water patterns in Florida Everglades to endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow population changes 🔥🌏 Species survival & reproduction could be affected, with implications for habitat management & wetland restoration 📊🧪 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Great opportunity for early career scientists. "...early career scientist with a successful record of connecting civic engagement & science. In addition to the financial award, fellows will work w/ASM Advocacy staff to develop a deeper understanding of civic engagement & public policy." Due May 11.

Student #algae projects — this one a Pokémon-inspired set of #seaweed cards. 🤩🤩

I’m still waiting to hear back about my NSF PRF currently in review… but at this point would it even be worth accepting if x months in its terminated?

I’m so close y’all… 🦈 #PhD

Preparing for this PhD defense is putting me through some crazy retail therapy… I just bought 70+ pieces of artwork from the 60s/70s (original and prints) for $100 🤯 #gradschool #phd

Just gave my first practice defense talk, now time to sleep

California pilots a solar-over-canal system to combat drought. Project Nexus will cover canals with solar panels, generating clean energy while preventing water evaporation. The project showing potential for 13 GW of annual energy, while saving 50,000 acres of land. buff.ly/ZBokAil #ShareGoodNewsToo

Haven't had a screw up this bad in a while! Almost psychedelic 🫠

Ontogenetic and sex variation in the foraging ecology of the salmon shark (Lamna ditropis) in the California current ecosystem 🦑🌎🐟🦈 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

I just created a Sci-Commers Starter Pack! Science Communication is CRITICAL right now, and there is more than one way to do it! Get some inspiration (+ fun!) from a variety of different sci-commers from various backgrounds (although there may be a bit of a marine bias here 💙). go.bsky.app/NMCFMcj

Got a travel grant to go sample specimens at the Swedish Museum of Natural History! Stoked to start a new collab on new species 👀🇸🇪

When your Uber shows up in a supercar 🦈

Spent hours weaving a very long taura (must have been 10m) out of tī kouka to help fish get over man made barrier today. it was lovely 😍

Bluesky proving that social media users do like clicking links, actually, if you let them

✨ New paper alert! ✨ We found that the #kelp #microbiome is disrupted in a warming ocean! 🌊🌡️ #Temperature had a larger effect than #nitrogen. Thanks to lead author Nichos Molnar, Robin Fales @intertidaleco.bsky.social & Cathy Pfister! enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The email I just got that started to make my heart race 😅🤦‍♂️ “We sincerely thank you for your interest in the position of Assistant Professor. We are pleased to inform you that we have begun reviewing applications.”

Me wasting my time applying to professor positions because there are no postdocs available in my field with the funding uncertainties 🤦‍♂️

I didn't know there was an Asian mullet (Rhinomugil corsula) that convergently has the "four eyes" (so they can see above and below the water surface) as the model Anableps (Anablepidae). These two are far apart on the Fish Tree of Life #convergentevolution Thieme et al. 2025 Scientific Reports

My academic sister Pascale @pergelichen.bsky.social just joined BlueSky! 👋 😊 She’s been added to the Permafrost Pack. Give her a follow as I’m sure she will post some great stuff (she won’t admit it but takes great field photos 😉) go.bsky.app/UhFqWzJ

It takes a village! 🧑‍🤝‍🧑💪🦈 Our Animal Care team recently completed annual exams on all seven leopard sharks in our Kelp Forest exhibit. From aquarists to veterinarians and volunteers, it takes a small community of shark afishionados to get this important job done!

Glad to see someone finally bringing attention to USGS!

This is the worst time ever to defend a PhD… my job prospects are looooow 🤦‍♂️

March 10, 1861: Canadian poet Pauline Johnson was born at the Six Nations Reserve. Born to a Mohawk father and British mother, her poetry blended the two culture. Her work often focused on the First Nations and the lives of women. My Deep Dive 👇
