When you're trying to write but your heart keeps melting. She!! 🩶🤍 (Lots of rereading, making notes within the original draft, and mapping today to piece the parts of this braided essay together.) 💜💜

Today's writing spot. Grateful. Real. Powered by cherry tomatoes. Best line I've written today in the creative NF essay I'm working on: "I was tired of pretending this was a prize." #AmWriting

🚨New Episode Alert🚨 This month we talk w/ historian @collthrush.bsky.social about his new book "Wrecked: Unsettling Histories from the Graveyard of the Pacific" (@uwapress.bsky.social 2025) - one of the best books I've read in a long while, I read a lot of books! www.podbean.com/ew/pb-e8h3e-...

Kid has been having some big feelings about second grade being over after a fantastic year. And I'm feeling grateful for our wonderful coparenting family. No adults telling him to get over it. Just being with him feeling his feelings, without shame. Talking openly. Hugs or space, whichever he needs.

Re: kids' books, I recommend Jason Shiga's MEANWHILE (which I discovered at the coparents' house where we did a joint Mother's Day celebration this year--that's kid showing me in the second pic). The level of labyrinthine adventure is just unreal, beyond anything I've ever encountered. #JasonShiga

Today's read. This one's been in the TBR pile for a long time.

Granta mourns Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. In memory of his life and work, we have lifted the paywall on his writing for the magazine.

Reminding any FSP alumni who are currently in the alumni program that we have our first alumni coaching call this afternoon! I'll be teaming up with a fellow individual coach to talk through your questions and offer support. See you there! #FacultyDevelopment #NCFDD

Kid's last day of second grade. I confessed I'm intimidated by next year, have no idea what's involved, and will be learning from him (I skipped the third grade so have no point of reference). Makes me realize what my parents must have felt like putting their kids in school in a whole new country! 💜

I was just reviewing an essay of his to use for my fall African lit course. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...

Today is the birthday of Rachel Carson, a personal hero and one of the most important conservation voices of the 20th century. Her talent as a writer and researcher drew attention to the wonders of ocean life and alerted the world to the ecological dangers of indiscriminate use of toxic pesticides.

Academia in 2025: For weeks I’ve been working through botched copy-edits of my monograph, outsourced by the publisher to a company I’d never heard of, until it finally dawned on me the terrible job might be AI. A quick search confirmed the company recently launched new AI software, which now means..

Awards given in gifted class last week. Kid got "Mr. Green: for your efforts toward protecting our planet." Really proud of his heart and mind 💚💙 and so grateful for an encouraging teacher who knows him. Teachers are so, so valuable and important.

Today's reading. #PercivalEverett

I love the song "Black," but not for the reasons most people do. (Sorry, I grew out of the emo pining after exes thing in my 20s.) I love it because kid and I change the lyrics. From one cat to the other (the two previously cohabitated)...

Oh jeez.

Re: my last post. I'm very interested in what happened here to create this royal screw-up.

I see a post circulating that the Chicago Sun-Times published a summer reading list of mostly books that don't exist--an AI-generated list. However, the image in all these posts is the same, and not confirmed by anyone I actually know. A true question for our time: does anyone know if this is real?

I know I'm not the only one who needed this last night. To hear it and to believe Ed's words. So much respect for this person and this band. #PearlJam youtu.be/VvmWxv1sFno?...

"Hunger Strike" tribute to Chris Cornell tonight at the final show of the Dark Matter tour in Pittsburgh. Our dearly loved and departed, they give us so much still. #PearlJam m.youtube.com/watch?v=xNiv...

My final countdown post: "Corduroy," best experienced live. Here's a snippet from last night. *Incredible* show that opened with "Footsteps" (!). And wow, Ed's gorgeous version of Springsteen's "My City of Ruins." Heart so full. Gratitude overflowing. 💜 #PearlJam

It's a double countdown post day, since I missed yesterday. This gorgeous cover is for anyone who's been in all the way--crazy, all-consuming, life-shaking--and came back out, grown up and whole, to tell the tale. Here's to all 195. 💜 #PearlJam youtu.be/itHi6TvqWEs?...

Kid is reading THERE WAS A PARTY FOR LANGSTON at school, and I showed him a video of Langston Hughes reading his poetry to a live musical accompaniment (!)--very cool and worth seeing if you haven't 😊 youtu.be/uM7HSOwJw20?...

Kid and I finished Dave Eggers' THE EYES AND THE IMPOSSIBLE last week and I highly recommend it, especially if your kid loves pondering "big picture"/philosophical questions about freedom, art, friendship, etc. Really well done. #DaveEggers #ReadingWithKids

Three more days in the Pearl Jam countdown! Here's an old favorite (kid calls this the "sneak attack" 😂). youtu.be/uFpuDkwNLRs?...

FOUR (!!) days left in our Pearl Jam countdown. I leave you with the song that is, in this stage of my life at least, the most meaningful, the most opening, the most cleansing. Miss you, Dad. Holding the torch (if often clumsily), every day 💜 youtu.be/LLjFoIOyCfw?...

We are at five days in our Pearl Jam countdown 💜 This is an absolutely stunning rendition of "Corduroy" from the Bridge School benefit in 1996. Taking a normally harder-edged song and softening it acoustically results in a gorgeous, tender sound. youtu.be/G1ezfokES1g?...

There's a pair of nesting barred owls in the woods behind my house, and while I hear them several times daily, sightings are far less frequent...especially right outside the doors of my birding room. The world, it is a wonder 💜

Potentially one of the best jam sessions on stage, ever. Neil Young comes out around 3:45 and it's unreal after that. youtu.be/hvtdbfI1sqQ?...
