Evan Bellingar dissected US mistletoe on white oak and it's really fascinating to see the underlying root structure. I've been working on AoNZ mistletoe for the last three years and it's the first time I have seen a dissection. 🌏https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1BhnUCGX2R/

For this #FossilFriday a question for paleobotanists and people interested in #paleobotany 🌿⛏️: what are the groups of fossil plants and/or the big events in plant evolution that you would like to read a new review paper about? #botany #fossil #plant #evolution

In rain shadow country checking out a potential Silver Banksia reintroduction sites west of Melbourne. Some beautiful old Buloke and Callitris that I usually see in semi-arid areas and we found a possible grindstone that may have been used for grinding ochre!

Here, @westcountryvoices.bsky.social have compiled my thread on the utterly bonkers mismanagement of Dartmoor into an easy-to-read article: westcountryvoices.co.uk/prepare-your...

1. This is Piles Copse, the largest remaining fragment of high-ground temperate rainforest on Dartmoor. It’s a tiny speck of green in a dismal, human-made desert. Prepare yourselves for a story of breathtaking perversity, told in this thread. (There’s a one-page version at the bottom). 🧵

This sedge never stops amazing me: first picture was taken 18 hours after fire; second picture - 36 hours post-fire. Detail: this was an early-dry season fire! Bulbostylis paradoxa fire-super star 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I know these are like the 21st century's equivalent of chain letter but I can't resist. Mine are the mouthwatering samosas from TipTop samosa, Kathmandu. It was only open for a limited time at night and always a massive queue meant that sometimes you just missed out on the best samosa in town.

Change is in the air for BHL! In 2026, BHL hosting will transition away from the Smithsonian, opening doors to reimagine our future. Rest assured, our 63 million pages of biodiversity knowledge remain secure and accessible. Learn what's next for BHL ➡️

Think of Australia's precious biodiversity when casting your vote in the federal election, we will be. Urgent reform of the EPBC Act to legislate for an absolute net gain in biodiversity is paramount. Read the full election message: tinyurl.com/35zakxyn #auspol #federalelection

Probit analysis is key to modelling seed viability loss over time. A new Methods paper in #SeedScienceResearch led by @dustinwolkis.bsky.social provides R code for fitting survival curves and assessing seed longevity under different storage conditions! #Botany #PlantScience 🧪

Great opportunity at my old workplace. Lovely group of people and beautiful place to work. jobs.careers.vic.gov.au/jobtools/jnc...

New experiment pilot: How long can 1 yr old snow gums last without water? (My team has repeatedly failed to kill our study plants various ways that we thought would work so we need trials to figure out how long to withhold water for a future drought resilience study.) 🧪 #botany #ecology

Masters finally submitted 🥳 PhD, here I come! 🤓

From a distance it may not scream #Proteaceae, but #Conospermum flexuosum definitely is! Otherwise known as the Tangled Smokebush, this species is found on the southwest corner in winter-wet areas and granite outcrops. It’s also named for its straggly zig-zagging inflorescences!

Great day to be on the fire line, during prescribed burns in some of our experimental prairie plots

Very excited for this online seminar series I am organising with @ecologyisamess.bsky.social @darmitage.bsky.social @giuliaghedini.bsky.social @masatoyamamichi.bsky.social Lynette Loke, Andrew Letten And Po-Ju Ke. Follow to find out more!

Shocking to see extensive mortality amongst the remnant populations of Silver Banksia at my old study sites. It's been an exceptionally dry summer but I've never seen it this bad before. #drought #climatechange

The next exciting instalment from @jradford-smith.bsky.social on how climate filters rainforest tree strategies in the Australian subtropics. Now available in early view at @ecography.bsky.social doi.org/10.1111/ecog...

Welcome news. I’d be keen to know if there’s a systematic plan for growing Australia’s protected areas to meet conservation goals effectively. #conservation #biodiversity www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

Interested in tree dieback in Australia? Callum Bryant at ANU has started up the Dieback & Climate Succession Network. Virtual meetings monthly! Tomorrow March 21, 1 pm AEDT hear from Mike Dunlop (CSIRO) + Liz Dalgleish-Wright (Parks Victoria) Contact Cal (or me) for details.

Love to see stories like this - botanists and citizen science groups working together to bring a critically endangered tree back from the brink of oblivion. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

Just published! Our latest research on the germination thermal niche of Australian alpine species and what it means for seed-based restoration is now out. Take a look! 🌱🌡️🏔️ doi.org/10.1111/rec.... @restorationecology.bsky.social @intlsocseedsci.bsky.social @ecolsocaus.bsky.social

A recent study of the striking hairpin banksia (Banksia cunninghamii), in areas of Victoria affected by the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, found the species is threatened with local extinction if fires return to these areas in less than 12 years. cosmosmagazine.com/nature/plant... #AusJBotany

A new super cute genus in the sunflower family just dropped 🌻 It's known as "Woolly devil" (Ovicula biradiata). It was found by a park volunteer and supervisor in the Chihuahuan Desert in Big Bend National Park, Texas. 🌱 phytokeys.pensoft.net/article/1376... 🗞️ www.npr.org/2025/02/26/n...
