An important point about Universal Basic Income.

Some think inequality is fine if those with the least are getting a bit more than before, But inequality in resources means inequality in power, & any widening power gap is a threat to us: henry-tam.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-...

This encouraging from the co-op party - showing that people are ready for a power shift to community. The Labour Party talked in these terms before the election - but the Devolution White Paper was extremely disappointing. I hope this encourages a rethink. party.coop/community/le...

Liz Carr speaks about the upcoming #AssistedDyingBill, and how only when the systems are put in place to give us dignity, choice and control in life can we have them in death.

Current proposals on welfare reform will increase levels of poverty among disabled households. As part of the Disability Charities Consortium, we’ve written to Liz Kendall and Rachel Reeves to ask for a cross-governmental strategy to lift disabled people out of poverty.

We do not have to choose btw authoritarian 'strongman' politics and laissez faire 'anything goes' individualism. Communitarianism points to a deliberative approach to build inclusive and cooperative communities: blogs.bath.ac.uk/iprblog/2025... @uniofbathipr.bsky.social

What kind of society gets all alarmist about suggestions to tax those with considerable wealth a little bit more, & yet puts up with the endless droning on about the 'necessity' to cut support for the poorest? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... #GoodOnRayner

"We have huge disparities in living standards in the north. It feels like we're living in a different country. The north-south divide is no accident – it's national policy" – @andyburnham.bsky.social speaking at our event with @metromayorsteve.bsky.social and @itsbethperry.bsky.social last night.

❣️We're super excited to share our new guides to Citizen Network. 🙌 @claretarling.bsky.social‬ has done a fantastic job designing the guides in #EasyRead, using fabulous illustrations by Ester Ortega 👓 Read in English & Español, check them out 👉 buff.ly/BaVxk17 #Inclusion #EverydayCitizenship

Finally finished youngest kid's DLA form. It's taken 200 pages and two printer cartridges. I feel like this is as good an argument for universal basic income as any.

🌊KKR cannot be allowed to take over Thames Water - or we’ll be drowning in it. We're calling on @london.gov.uk Mayor Sadiq Khan to act - and bring forward a real, democratic alternative. Add your name: actionnetwork.org/petitions/ma...

Imagine a basic income experiment that explored the impact of UBI on those working at least 3 jobs and over 60 hours a week. I would hope and expect participants to work less, and yet I'm sure plenty of people would claim that UBI clearly makes people lazy, even if everyone dropped to one 40-hr job.

BOOM!💥 The number of @bsky.app users just hit 36 MILLION!!! 👏 BlueSky is absolutely nailing in it in every way. LETS KEEP GOING, LETS MAKE BLUESKY THE BIGGEST SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM ON THE PLANET

This recipe has always been missing a dividend component. Ultimately, we as citizens are the stockholders. Public funding is what makes all of this prosperity possible. That prosperity should be universally shared as universal basic income, not concentrated into the hands of the 1%.

People need a sense of belonging and supportive community connections. The way to do that is through more active, inclusive community hubs: henry-tam.blogspot.com/2024/04/rein...

Nicki, one of the people taking a complaint to the UN about the proposed Assisted Dying Bill, spoke at the press conference yesterday about her concerns. 'I strongly believe the UK should not be asking questions about assisted dying until every service we need is in place.'

Amazon has bragged that warehouse automation has reduced costs by 25%, and one has to exercise willful disbelief to conclude that those savings are not in labor costs. Amazon is employing 750,000 robots today versus their 200,000 just 5 years ago. It's not to upskill workers and pay them more money.

Why do powerful 'populists' fuel hate & resentment against the weak & vulnerable? Because if they were seen as the real threat, Their dominance would wane. To safeguard democracy, Close the power gap: citizen-network.org/library/the-...

If this is true then the lurch to the right from UK Labour is in full swing. A pathetic attempt to placate Farage and co.

Zack advocates all the right policies for me eg wealth tax, UBI and funding our failing public sector - and he’s a great communicator. @greenparty.org.uk has failed to capitalise on Labour’s abysmal time in government. Time for a reset with new leadership. Good luck, Zack.

This case shows the unfair nature of overpayments enforcement. Do you work out, overpayments weekly or monthly? DWP can’t consistent. It’s woeful that Oksana wasn’t contacted earlier. And it’s why this issue needs sorting sooner rather than later. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

'Traditional community values' is too often just code for prejudice and bigotry. People who want true solidarity and positive community relations will back inclusive communitarian development: henry-tam.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-...

The decision to defer any action on #socialcare is such an own goal. It’s exactly the kind of reform you could build a new narrative around with hope and vision. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Time for China to organise the Oscars. As “Trump says non-US movies to be hit with 100% tariffs” www.bbc.com/news/article...

Trump now wants to end Housing First programs and go back to a temporary shelter model, limiting housing assistance to two years. This will throw 300,000 people back onto the streets who are mostly veterans and mostly disabled. It is the opposite of what we need. We need more Housing First + UBI.

The Tories have shown that the more you stoke irrationalist resentment (against the EU, Net Zero, human decency), the more you lose support to those who are lifelong champions of irrationalist resentment. Learn from Canada, learn from Australia, Stand firm against Trump-clones, Be progressive.

Like the Tories, Labour will find chasing extreme Right Wing votes a disastrous policy. It’s a black hole that brings no hope and no return of support. As @plancommonsense.bsky.social show: what people really want is genuinely progressive policies.

I remember being shocked by a lecturer @edinburghup.bsky.social who claimed politics was primarily a career ladder. Today I wonder what people who want to ‘get into politics’ must be thinking. Parties seem redundant - knowing or having a ‘personality’ may be key. labourlist.org/2025/02/labo...

Did I write that? I suppose I didn’t really need a crystal ball.

Now more than ever we should be paying attention to David Graeber's warning regarding politics and "Centrism."

Local Elections results: Labour lost about 190 council seats; & progressive Lib Dems and the Greens gained around 190 btw them. Conservatives lost 676 seats; and the even more anti-progressive Reform gained 677. Should Labour be more progressive or try to be anti-progressive? #ItsObvious

“Politics has no place in the classroom.” Hmmm The classroom is soaked in politics. Whatever your subject. (Why these questions and not others? Why now? What are the consequences of the answers?) Your choice is whether to make the implicit explicit and discuss it, or to leave it festering.
