how bleak that following most elections now is going WOOOOOOO fascists only on 47%!!!!!!!

UK politicians should produce made-for-tv movies instead of doing politics. Their plot development is too slow. I don't need 8 years to work out Brexit will wreck the economy or 4 years to realize Keir Starmer's anti-immigration pivot will legitimize the far-right party while winning no voters.

The first season - ten episodes - of Podyssey is a gift from me to you. But given the intense time commitment involved, if you want a 20-episode Season 2, it is up to you to commission it by supporting it. You can do so from as little as a fiver. I love you all, anyway. A x ko-fi.com/podyssey

This is an excellent article explaining what is happening in the US. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Even if you (wrongly) believe that some immigrants lack due process rights, what’s to stop the government from claiming that *you* are an undocumented immigrant; removing you to El Salvador; citing an “administrative error”; and refusing to do anything to bring you back? The answer is due process.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

UK: Brexit is the biggest act of economic self harm any country will ever perform USA: Hold my beer...

NEW 🧵 A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far: 1) US consumers are reacting very very negatively. These are the worst ratings for any US government’s economic policy since records began.

in this week's newsletter! an actually serious essay, in which I try to figure out why on earth so many of the mainstream political elites feel that the far right ought to be able to get away with everything: youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/why-the-el... [free to read!]

I just did the numbers and this assumption looks to be completely right. Let’s pause for a minute and consider how INSANE this is. 🧵

"I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America, because that speaks to our greatness" -- 20 hours into his speech, Cory Booker is spitting absolute 🔥

The Department of Government Efficiency, for example

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century." snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...

1/7. In case you haven’t been following, here is a short summary of the misnamed Russian-American "peace process" regarding Ukraine.

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time: Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves. Q: Why are you running away? Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels. Q: But you’re foxes! Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas is delivering the tough messages that EU foreign / defence policy has needed for 15 years. And that is going to upset those who have been responsible for the failings which she is highlighting and seeks to avoid in the future. Keep going @kajakallas.bsky.social

Russia presents its demands as concessions and then presses more demands and calls them guarantees of the first set. Ukraine understands this dynamic all too well. If Trump is Ru asset or an idiot, at least the free Western media can learn to cover things with their real names.

Jeffrey Goldberg thinking he was being pranked and then realizing he was actually just in the war plans group chat is such a good microcosm of how it feels to be alive right now, everything seems fake until you realize it’s actually real and incredibly stupid

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

Reading the news to distract from explosions and then listening to explosions to distract from the news cause idk what’s worse

With all the words in the english language I cannot possibly convey what it feels like to hear a Russian drone over your head while reading this

The right headline www.politico.eu/article/dona...

“Polls Trump would kill for.” Our own polling on #Zelensky, the war and the future of Ukraine. (More data in the piece.) economist.com/europe/2025/...

A scenario: -Russia accepts ceasefire -Russia then breaks it and blames Ukraine -Trump sides with Russia, accuses Ukraine of killing his ‘peace plan’ and stops aid again, this time for good Europe better prepare for this scenario.

A mother & son in Ukraine 🇺🇦, 1993 vs. 2025. Whose side are we on, America🇺🇸?

Putin has the luxury of watching Washington and Kyiv wrangle while he pummels 🇺🇦’s population and energy grid. So far, Putin has been clear about the terms he’s willing to accept. Like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II, his offer is this: nothing- Robert Kagan writes in the Atlantic. /1
