Ok so this is possibly stretching the boundaries of "intimate" but I watched Metallica at Whitley Bay Ice Rink ~3000 capacity on the same tour they were selling out 15-20k capacity arenas. Skunk Anansie , Entombed , Wildhearts , L7 all at the original Newcastle Riverside back in the '90s.
