If you're looking at Earth from far away, and searching for biosignatures, you'd find nothing that cannot also be explained abiotically. That's what I'm indirectly getting from a day worth of lectures. In case you're wondering why aliens haven't visited yet...

this flashing up on the screen with the date and dramatic music during a transition shot of a netflix documentary in 2054

An interesting question is why do 'we' put them there. I suspect it's a case of "har har this guy really put that other one in his place" -> "oh no psychopaths are now in power" How many times did you give a push to the understanding, gentle person Instead of the jerk

There is this idea that simple life is more resistant to big perturbations than complex life - climate swings, oxygen levels, etc can easily destroy complex life but microbes will be fine At the same time, you'd think that beyond a given complexity, life could increase its resistance (1/2)

This is all over my feed so I finally read it. There's nothing wow or surprising. Do people realize that even if GPT had accessed the text, telling it "no you didn't read it" would have had exactly the same effect, causing it to output an apology? Have people really just decided gpt is a human?

"'It turns out the company had no AI and instead was just a group of Indian developers pretending to write code as AI,' ... Remarkably, the company managed to sustain this deception for eight years."

“One of our very good friends – he now does not have the emotional courage to hang up a sheet to collect moths at night It is too devastating to see how few there are” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A 23-Year-Old Crypto Bro Is Now Vetoing NSF Grants While Staring At His Water Bottle Picture this: You're a researcher who has spent years developing a grant proposal, gone through layers of expert review, and received National Science Foundation (NSF) approval. Then some kid barely out of college…

The modern condition of waking up to horrible news from all over the world and just having to shove that all back down and get on with your silly little job 😞

Finished reading "A memory named Empire" Such a great book! It baits you wit a tech that lets you integrate the memories of a dead person with your own, but the tech immediately breaks and instead you get a political intrigue / action story about what the consequences of such tech would be

Just two weeks left to get your mascot design in for your chance to win a FREE registration to this year's jam-packed #ALIFE conference. You might even get to see your mascot come to life in a full-sized costume... 👀 tinyurl.com/ALifeMascotC...

the key to success in tech is moving fast enough to outpace the law or simply break the law in a smart way. all successful start-ups and tech companies are built on fraud and monopoly

Whatever happened to the "people should always be informed in advance if they are talking to a bot" rule

OpenAI is featuring a "Looksmaxxing GPT" that provides "PSL ratings" for photos. It will rate people as "subhuman", and advise men to get invasive procedures like jaw surgery to "increase their sexual market value" among women, who it describes as "hypergamous by nature".

Google in six months: "We are seeing unprecedented usage of Gemini in Gmail. As we told you, everyone wants Gemini and we definitely don't have our thick thumbs on the scale"

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

This is a superb project by a great research team in Tiff and Beth. Please read and get involved. I will be pimping the crap out of this henceforth

NIH stops development of HIV vaccine, terminates grants to consortia, including at Duke University. www.science.org/content/arti...

Nazi rocket scientists are automatically considered honorary US citizens you see

Meanwhile destroying NASA and leaving it in tatters

*speechless horror* (Guys the NASA Exoplanet Archive is in this box. My job is in this box.)

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision… Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter. If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

The President's budget request would be devastating to NASA science and our quest for life beyond Earth. But there's still time to act, and your voice matters.

By complete chance, the security camera was on for the first time in like a year when cookie got sick. So now I know exactly when he called me. Sad but I won't let it happen again www.instagram.com/reel/DKRZZbw...

I wrote about discovering my grandmother’s hair in Harvard’s Peabody Museum in The Trouble of Color. It still haunts me. I salute Tamara Lanier who persisted in her quest to win control of her ancestor’s images from the same museum — and prevailed! www.nytimes.com/2025/05/28/h...
