There should be a new Entante Cordiale, whereby France simplifies its preposterous numbers system ('quatre-vingts dix-neuf', etc) in return for the British sorting out their cough/dough/enough/plough/tough/trough maddening lunacy.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 2876234: Don't worry too much about crafting the perfect first line. Sometimes it's easier just to write a few pages (or a few dozen) without thinking too hard about what you're doing; then, when you finally get to your first line, delete everything that came before.

This is the face of a dog in disgrace. Earlier today, she swam across the river, scrambled out the other side, then REFUSED to swim back because the water was too deep and scary. In the end, I waited nearby so she didn’t panic and run off, while M walked 20 minutes to collect her…
