Seventy five little baby oaklings potted on from their IBC nursery.

As always, it's a real shame to see all the ash with dieback, but it's best to get them down on the ground on our own terms, when and where we want them, instead of through the shed roof. Happily, I'll be providing a few saplings of various species to replace the trees we knocked down.

After Storm Eowyn the treehouse still stands, as does the pallets-and-polythene henhouse, and most of the other things around the garden, but Anton and the girls were happy to see the temporary demise of this scabby old tree for the forage around its roots.

Life, uhh... finds a way.

Chilly enough on Nephin at the weekend... I'd say it's fairly cold up there again today!

One of the many dogs in my life, undoubtedly one of the most hardcore animals in existence, and formerly one of the most impressive #dogsofinstagram, at 13 years of age Baldric is starting to slow down and wean himself off his adrenaline-junkie pursuits. But he still knows how to have a good time.

There's a lot of downed trees around in the aftermath of #stormdarragh. Don't take any unnecessary risks... only necessary ones. #sligo

Nice day to be out and about... in rain first vertical, then diagonal, then horizontal... with 40-odd dead or dying ash trees put on the ground. I'm sure the imminent Storm Darragh would have done the job for us anyway, but it's generally best to lay them down into the field, and not onto the road!

Sometimes the role of an arborist is to make a big tree small enough to fit into an urban environment, sometimes it's to take down a dead tree whose body just hasn't got the news yet. Sometimes, it's to clear up whatever mess the previous tree crew left behind them years ago, like this disaster...

Frosty enough morning, but still working in a T-shirt by midday! Best to enjoy the blue skies while they are here though, climbing trees in the rain is a bit less fun...

Benbulben north face. #sligo

Honestly, it breaks my heart to see another two ash trees down and out of the way, but when they've got the dieback, they've got to go, especially when they are in range of the owner's house, and directly over their tank and percolation on one side and the neighbour's lane on the other.

Fun little melon scratcher getting these two gristly sycamore down on the ground, with the overhead electrical wire in amongst the branches.
