The 3rd annual Memphis Public Libraries Comic Con is happening this Saturday, 10-3! It's a FREE event, & I'm one of the many creators who will be selling & talking about the comics we make! I'll be there with lotsa my comics, including the newest Watusi issues! Hope to see you there!

A new solo finish to a Watusi jam comic starter from 2003: featuring a couple of long-time supporting characters, plus a cast of thousands! Read more Watusi comics at ko-fi.com/smearysoapbox

This has got to be the most banal Marvel trade dress I've ever seen! It's worse than just lazy ... #LunchtimeReading picked up on the recommendation of the JMS script, which, sadly, was similarly unimpressive.

We were literally talking about this at lunch-- how much private sector innovation is built on a foundation of government-funded research.

Well worth reading...

Free lettering tip:: When doing the open border balloon thing, you should try & avoid having 2 open balloons stacked over each other if they're not in correct reading order. Your eye will automatically go to that balloon. If possible add a border and eye will follow correct path

The early morning rain moved on, & it turned out to be a lovely day for drawing w/ Memphis Urban Sketchers at Memphis Botanic Garden! Fun chance to draw Thomas Dambo's Ibbi Pip w/ a sharpened stick (among other tools)! The Trolls are on display thru 5/31, so catch 'em this month if you can!

New Watusi comic: digital/physical combo inking. I need to figure out how to draw squirrels better, I think! (& w/o swiping from Patrick McDonnell) Read more Watusi comics at ko-fi.com/smearysoapbox

Come join me Sat., 4/26 (11-4) at the East Buntyn ArtWalk! I'm pitching my tent at 490 Prescott St. (along with mosaic artist Susan Ferkin) as part of this amazing open-air bazaar of artist pop-ups in this inviting & walkable East Memphis neighborhood; admission is FREE, & it's child & pet friendly.

New Watusi comic: inked digitally, while on the road. Pretty happy to be able to do actual finished work while on longer trips, instead of just writing/drawing in my sketchbook. Read more Watusi comics at ko-fi.com/smearysoapbox

Just like the painters of Sirigu gave Floyd Newsum "freedom" to paint more abstractly, seeing his "House of Grace" show has me thinking more along those lines myself. This will become a painting soon, I suspect...

Another fabulous done-in-one issue of Redcoat! This one w/ Annie Oakley, past issues w/ Johnny Appleseed & (my fave) the Bloody Benders. Geoff Johns and ‪@bryanhitch.bsky.social‬ keep up their stellar track record in what is hands-down the monthly comic I look forward to the most! #LunchtimeReading

Started in 2003, finished this week! Another stab at digital inking, w/ a mix of handdrawn edits. Still not fully comfortable working digitally (my lettering felt particularly rough here), but when it goes well, I really like it! Of course, that could be said about anything, couldn't it?

My April newsletter is up: news of upcoming shows, work in progress, the usual blahblahblah... mailchi.mp/0bfb9a0e622e/ssnews0425

I know Basil Wolverton's art mainly thru his detailed monster grotesqueries, but these light-hearted stories showed a whole different side of his work- a witty use of wordplay! Such a fun issue, reprinting (nearly) all the Wolverton material from the first Powerhouse Pepper comic! #LunchtimeReading

This Love and Rockets cover seemed really odd to me when I first saw it, but the reason behind it is both heartbreaking and sweet. Gilbert's "Love is Everything" is the standout for this issue; a really beautiful piece! #LunchtimeReading

I’ve had too much busywork going on (not to mention a nasty bout of the flu) to get new Watusi comics ready to share, so here’s an oldie but a goodie! Bit of trivia: this was only the second time I’d taken one of my starter panels and made a full comic out of it!

Well said, Chattanooga!

Trump’s trying to gut funding for libraries: you can fight back with ALA. The President's executive order to dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services would be deeply harmful. We need to speak out. Take action NOW: tell Congress to protect library funding. bit.ly/ProtectLibraryFunding

My years spent working in my public library really opened my eyes to the importance of public libraries, in a way I never saw when I was just a patron. They are a great value for the money. Essential. Invaluable.

First one of these new 8.5x5.5" DC trades I've read. Great noir-tinged stories, and Cooke/Rader/et al's bold artwork handled the reduction well. The lettering, not so well, at least for my aging eyes. #SickbedReading

Some illuminating webcartoonist interviews (ca. 2006); heartening to see how many are still at it, expanding/building upon what they started some 20 years ago! #SickbedReading

I love finding early 90s trades in the 1/2 off bin; they're less than the price of a new monthly! This one featured 3 issues by @tytempleton.bsky.social , too! #SickdayReading
