Torts and Strawbs 🍓🐢

You know who has two thumbs and *doesn't* use AI for their book covers? This guy! [thumbs myself]

Scalzi and I got a really nice review that includes this: "Equal parts hilarious and comforting, Wheaton's narration is an all-around delight." If anyone needs me, I'll be banging pots together while I sing a song called "I am so great, everybody loves me."

I used to say this, "my relative just has an anger problem" my therapist asked: did they routinely get in trouble at work for outbursts and fights? Me: no Therapist: well they dont have an anger problem- they can control their temper when it counts Me:

It’s true

When a conservative talking point suddenly becomes a widespread topic of conversation in public life, you can bet it's because loads of money has been poured into promoting it. Another crucial exposure by @petergeoghegan.bsky.social : democracyforsale.substack.com/p/us-antiabo...

Yup. "AI" should be understood primarily as a marketing term designed to impress people who have no understanding of (nor any real interest in understanding) the underlying tools and processes.

I really like it when you walk past a lamppost and you see a sticker that says Trans Rights are Human Rights

So, I think it's time I begin, in detailed specifics, talking about the mess that is Unbound / Boundless as a book publisher, in essence stealing most of a years royalties from me and many other authors, as a result of poor financial decisions, and legal BS. Please read and share this thread.

Check out my pal @boundlessphotos.bsky.social's cool Etsy shop! They're selling pride-themed scale mail earrings (yeah). Mine just arrived today and I am obsessed etsy.com/uk/shop/mclaughlansmithing

Did you need Werner Herzog's Ducktales today? I think you do you know. #tiktok

Hopefully this is not being seriously considered, given the propensity of Gen AI tools to hallucinate and produce inaccurate summaries and analysis

Academia in 2025: For weeks I’ve been working through botched copy-edits of my monograph, outsourced by the publisher to a company I’d never heard of, until it finally dawned on me the terrible job might be AI. A quick search confirmed the company recently launched new AI software, which now means..

Write a note or record a video to say why you loved the show!

Energy cost of AI www.technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/1... (I disagree with their statement that AI is now unavoidable btw)

I work for Scottish Book Trust and we’re running a survey for parents/teachers/kids book enthusiasts about how they find books for kids. I’d be enormously grateful if anyone can spare 5-10 mins to share their thoughts. #KidLitUK forms.office.com/e/EdVhWA0T0n

CEO pay is up 1,085% since 1978, while typical worker pay is up just 24%.  Why do we always hear "we can't afford to pay our workers more" but never "we can't afford to pay our CEO more"?

Gonna pre-order through my local indie bookseller for sure

Yup. Our foundation donates locally, but what it's doing fundamentally is adding a bit of spackle to the gaps. If you widen the gaps, the spackle can't suddenly act as structural support. That's what functional government is for.

hey, person with chronic conditions that qualify me for covid vaccines here, please feel free to lie through your teeth about having any of these to get vaccinated, it is literally prosocial behavior to do so

Really make you think.

This is a thread. Read the whole thread.

UK people, it's time for you, too, to start using a pregnancy tracking app if you're a cis man or an obviously post-menopausal woman. We can't do much about individual phone searches, but we can confound the data at other levels.

Well done Austria!!! #eurovision

I noticed I got a bump on followers tonight which I’m assuming is ppl following for Eurovision stuff. I’m really sorry it just didn’t feel right to do my usual coverage this year. I’ll still have Eurovision prints in my shop with profits from them going to MAP (medical aid for Palestinians) ✌️

Great line from @bishopoconnell.bsky.social on his post at Scalzi's blog today: "if reading your nation’s histories only make you proud, you’re not reading history. You’re reading propaganda." whatever.scalzi.com/2025/05/16/t...

"AI" uses em-dashes because the writers whose (appropriated) work it's trained on use them. I use them a lot, personally, and of course just about everything I've ever written was chucked into the training bin without my consent or assent. So, you know, whenever you see an "AI" em-dash, think of me.

Ah, this is what my fellow authors are angry/ disheartened about. To be clear: if ai is generating any of 'your' writing; I contest your 'right' to call yourself a writer or author. I work around autism, ADHD & fatigue and pain that comes and goes, to write my 80k-160k epic fantasy novels MYSELF.

Seems like an appropriate time to post this again. It's a comparison of 'good' AI narration vs the real thing. AI narration is like injecting your fiction with bleach. Don't do it. It robs your story of its ability to connect. www.youtube.com/watch?v=05lx...

I just watched an orangutan tie a knot. You should see it too.

Here are some comics and stories and drawings and stuff I have done! lrgcarter.github.io

Glasgow’s latest mural, located at 1198 Govan Road, depicts and honours Mary Barbour who brought together tenants from Govan and Partick to campaign for rent freezes during the First World War. Designed by artist Jeks and commissioned by SWG3’s Yardworks GRID and the LHA.

Most probably, some of the guests. We did leave the church to the sound of the Raiders March (Indiana Jones theme) being played on the organ. The cake had some Totoro clay figures made by a bridesmaid.

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Trans men’s insight on this is so fucking valuable in understanding the nuances of what’s going on with men. We need to be amplifying them, and hopefully cis men can realize what is actually the source of their loneliness.
