"violent protest is any protest we intend to respond to with violence"

Four LAPD officers on horseback surround a man laying on the ground, trample him, and beat him with their polycarbonate "saber" batons.

Santa Monica pier to L.A. City Hall is 16.4 miles (Manhattan is 13.4 miles from north to south)

Rep. Maxine Waters was denied entry to the Metro Detention Center Los Angeles on Sunday, June 8, 2025, attempted to visit David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union California, who was detained by ICE agents on Friday following immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles

Came to the edge of my building and saw the heart of Los Angeles march by. 💚❤💙💜💛 This right here is what makes my city great. Don't let the dictator or his cronies tell you different. #LosAngeles #NoKings #LittleTokyo #ArtsDistrict

the issue is not just ICE. we can live free and safe. or we can have police like we have right now. we cannot do both

That officer took deliberate aim at this journalist and shot her. There's nobody standing near her.

“As protesters and law enforcement officers clashed in downtown Los Angeles, an L.A. Police Department helicopter flew over a crowd on 1st Street, announcing, “I have all of you on camera. I’m going to come to your house.”” Wtaf www.latimes.com/california/l...

For all the pundits and politicians who are going to second-guess the protests in LA. The first order problem is Trump. As is the second order dilemma. And the third. It’s easy to punch down. Try standing up.

I just have to say for those of you not in LA that in the days before the horrible raids started, there was no crisis or whatever they would let you believe. It wasn't like something was escalating out of control and somebody had to step in. THEY are creating the problems.

Violent protest is when people pull out guns. Doing shit that is highly disruptive doesn’t make a protest violent

we call this football, which is the most popular sport in the world

Fascists love their Randy's!

Some excellent local news coverage of the LA protests including these on the scene posts from LA Times reporter @jqwritesstuff.bsky.social ⤵️

In the last 20 or so minutes I’ve seen LAPD officers shove women to the ground without provocation, rip a sign out of a man’s hand and then swing a baton into his leg and raise a less-lethal launcher to aim directly at a protester (which I’m 99% is a major policy violation.)

FLAG: the SEIU is holding rapid response rallies to call for the release of David Huerta and an end to the ICE raids TOMORROW at multiple locations nationwide

Them: “LA is a full on insurrection” Us at the protest:

not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

1 in 12 Americans live in California. 1 in 35 Americans live in LA County. LA is America

Solidarity to comrades in LA. It's really heartening to see so many people telling ICE to gtfo. We are many, they are few.

I live in Los Angeles. The President is lying.

It is so frustrating when people say that Trump needs a pretext to escalate or a reason to be authoritarian. There is no justification for either and he has already done both without needing an excuse. This is what abusers do. They victimize regardless of what their victims do

Important thing to beat people over the head with: Trump has turned American cities into warzones and for fucking what? Prices are way up, jobs will be way down, the dollar is worth less, and now the highway is blocked off by cops. Maybe the Great Mythical Immigrant wasn’t the problem after all.

Governor Newsom: "I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops ... and return them to my command. ... This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed." The letter:

The weird, often whitewashed way the civil rights movement is taught (or not taught) seemed to convince a lot of people that nonviolence was met with nonviolence, instead of you know, dogs, hoses, beatings, death, etc

Property damage isn't violence, etc etc, but also how do we even know that the protestors set the shopping cart alight? Carts aren't generally flammable but flash-bangs cause fire, and this just looks like police firing incendiary devices at protesters huddled behind a dumpster.

“Pls be witnesses. Take pictures. Document everything. Take names. Remember what you see,” @ndlon.bsky.social says. “We need to reach out to relatives of those who have been seized. These are our ppl they are taking, & we do this work out of love for them, for their worth.” ndlon.org/statement-fr...

Elon Musk perfectly laying out the case against privatization in a single tweet

California SB 98, passed in 2021, specifically allows journalists to remain in areas closed by law enforcement during public events. The law officers from assaulting, interfering with, or obstructing journalists. Nor can journalists be cited for failure to disperse. @knightcolumbia.org

Nat Guard/DHS threw tear gas canisters and smoke grenades into the crowd. Protesters and media hit. Pellet rounds deployed. All to seemingly clear path for a convoy of DHS/Border Patrol vehicles. I got hit but fine after an eye rinse.

The push and pull continues … it’s now LAPD, not DHS or the Guard, forcing people back down Alameda away from MDC. A lot of people are running onto the adjacent metro line to get away from less lethal launcher weapons. Very dangerous situation.

I feel like a lot of Americans have forgotten that LA is the second largest city in the country, and that LA county has almost 10 million people, and that it is almost faster to drive from DC to Boston than from one side of LA to the other.

HAPPENING NOW: Aerial coverage of protesters marching peacefully in LA to protest ongoing ICE raid operations and Trump’s federalization of the National Guard Reporter: “What we’re looking at right now is a quiet, organized group and demonstrators marching peacefully to their destination.”

The Trump administration's baseless deployment of the National Guard is plainly retaliation against California, a stronghold for immigrant communities, and is akin to a declaration of war on all Californians.

The illegitimate, lawless, and authoritarian regime in control of the government of the United States is at war with the people of the United States.
