Under the smokescreen of war: Two days ago, Israel’s Higher Planning Council for the West Bank allowed IDF training in Firing Zone 918. This means the total demolition of 12 villages—home to around 2,800 people—and the final stage of ethnic cleansing in Masafer Yatta.

Key Gaza aid group @aneraorg.bsky.social reports yet another "dedicated.. experienced" staffer has been killed. "Mahmoud Mohammed Rassrass was killed with 2 of his young children in an Israeli drone strike on their tent in...an area designated by Isr as a 'safe zone.'" www.anera.org/press/mahmou...

call me crazy but I don't think we should.

This is a Jewish Congressman engaging in rank, horrific Islamophobia. Jewish organizations that rightfully criticize politicians for antisemitism, should also denounce this in no uncertain terms.

Democrat Governor Kotek seizing on this moment to be just cartoonishly evil.

Trump's ICE raids mean Washington farmers cannot harvest this year's cherry crop, and that many will now go out of business. www.spokesman.com/stories/2025...

In case the Deja Vu of it all wasn’t obvious enough…

No shade on folks trying to find ways to (bravely, IMO) confront ICE directly, but my understanding from talking to folks who do legal support for immigrants and asylum seekers is that shutting down this facility could actually make life dramatically more difficult for these communities.

This is so horrifying. This moment is one that requires some strategic reflection from all of us, to think critically about how we can actually achieve ICE abolition in Oregon and across the country. First: let the experiences of people impacted be the drivers of strategy.

Like “Squid Game.” That’s how residents describe it, invoking the dystopian TV show when recounting the lethal gauntlet that getting aid in famine-haunted Gaza has become. www.latimes.com/world-nation...

So not only has she been privately lobbying JVP, the Governor is steering a last-minute effort to jam "SB 106" through the legislature to literally obstruct the democracy of our county & prevent us from funding something we voted for, with implications that range far beyond this program. Stay tuned.

We need to stop Al's 35 gas turbines from polluting our air AND we must stop their plans to have 45 or more gas turbines in our community! www.eenews.net/articles/as-...

Trump delaying a decision on bombing Iran for two weeks (probably two weeks renewable) is good news.

I don't have enough words to convey my disgust for what @tinakotek.bsky.social is trying to do to our hard-won universal preschool program on behalf of the millionaire & billionaire class of Portland (or its suburbs, more accurately). 🧵 www.wweek.com/news/schools...

excellent read on Israel's quiet / overt annexation of the West Bank under the cover of genocide thebaffler.com/latest/the-a...

A test of how seriously members take their constitutional responsibilities.

just saw an apparently sincere post saying Americans had "over-learned" from the war on terror. speechless.

By the way, huge shout out to Biden and the Democrats in Congress for massively increasing the budget for ICE and CBP detention operations. Those additional billions are definitely having an effect in our cities.

Also been hearing a lot about “Decarbonized fossil fuels” We can have a habitable planet or we can keep using fossil fuels. Not a both/and situation

This reaffirms my opinion that Obama, despite being one of the most charismatic world leaders of the 21st century, is actually quite bad at politics.

climate crisis is already hacking away at the US economy

As an Iraqi, to this day - 22 years after the US invasion - I still get asked “what would you prefer, what we have now or Saddam still in power?” It is the deep, underlying subconscious dehumanisation& racism that it is fundamentally believed the binary is all we, as middle easterners, deserve.

🧵If you want to know how the immigration enforcement agents always get away with the brutality you are currently seeing, it is bc they have coverup teams and judges who protect them. You can listen to these articles as well. This is how judges help them: open.substack.com/pub/jennbudd...

This would be a world-historical tragedy.

So we've reached the "arresting Jewish electeds who oppose sending people to gulags" part of fighting antisemitism, I see

They're not calling for a complete ban on super PAC and dark money, but this is still a worthy effort.

just learned Zohran Mamdani legally cannot ask for money any more (NYC public matching rules). the public, however, can still donate to PACs to help Mamdani compete with Cuomo's billionaire/airbnb-funded campaign. let's get Mamdani across that finish line. tinyurl.com/forus25

The claims that McIver, Padilla, and Lander were committing assault should make you question every other time LEOs claim assault or resisting arrest, if you weren’t already.

A decade since the so-called "European migration crisis," the EU is "paying states and looking the other way." An alternate way that addresses the root cases of migration & offers more opportunities for legal asylum is possible. More in @drdrewmikhael.bsky.social's new piece for @timep.bsky.social.

In 2023, Freedom House released research that found we entered the 18th consecutive year of global freedom decline. I went to their website today to see if they updated research. But huge funding cuts & layoffs mean there's less research documenting democratic backslide. And that's the whole point.

somehow missed this story of an IDF soldier murdering a 20-year-old in his sleep in the West Bank. by all accounts, Jassem was suspected of no crime. soldiers burst into his home and shot him at point blank range. Photo: Jassem's dad in his son's bloodstained bed. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

THREAD: The assassinations in Minnesota highlight a dirty secret hardly ever mentioned in the news: U.S. has 1.1 million private police officers. There is an unprecedented footprint of privately organized violence that is doing all sorts of things most people have no idea about.

I haven't said anything about the truly Islamophobic campaign being waged in NYC during this primary but it's absolutely DISGUSTING and another example of how accepted Islamophobia is as routine bigotry. All of us have had enough of this. It's building up more bad blood and resentment.

Agreed. The “law lol” attitude is self-fulfilling. As with any institution, the law requires people to uphold and preserve it.

The bleakest timeline.

Embarrassing. I know NYC media does not care about PDX but we just had a ranked-choice election that elites hated bc it delivered what it promised: a more diverse group of electeds who, critically, did not have access to wealth. So, in fact, more democratic. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

This is all over your media, right? docs.un.org/en/A/HRC/59/26

I drew @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social’s rally tonight and if my eyes weren’t wet the whole time. Things are so bleak, fascism is rising, our neighbors are being kidnapped off the streets, but Zohran’s campaign is one spot of light. We really could win. Rank Zohron #1
