We become nationalistic only when it is necessary to protect ourselves against the aggression of the United States.

Carney has so far been successful at many things. Beginning Monday, he will have to start managing Alberta secessionism, which doesn't look easy. www.gzeromedia.com/gzero-north/...

Mark Carney, who has never sat in Parliament and has only been a politician for four months, led his Liberal Party to victory. Now comes the hard part. @stephenmaher.bsky.social explains the challenges that lie ahead for Carney and his minority government. www.gzeromedia.com/gzero-north/...

I think people voted for Fanjoy because he is the kind of candidate who would call to congratulate his opponent.

Q. ‘Has Pierre Poilievre called to congratulate you?’ A. ‘I haven’t heard from him. I don’t know that he will. That’s up to him.’

For my American friends that want a greater understanding of our electoral system, here you go. Most of this is not an exaggeration.

It's a high bar, but this from @radleybalko.bsky.social might be one of the most fucked up things I've read in the new Trump era. For context, this TX lawyer had just had an informal conversation with a family caught up in ICE raids. Seriously. Read this. radleybalko.substack.com/p/the-courag...

Here’s my profile of Liberal Leader Mark Carney - who is, depending on how you look at it, a shrewd strategist or unbelievably lucky, or both in this particular moment. #cdnpoli www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/9bc9b25...

Halifax used to have five partisan dailies, closely associated with parties. The monopoly broadsheet era brought a new approach, influenced by “impartial” wire service style. It may now be ending but has the audience abandoned non-partisan outlets? I’m not sure.

I just learned that the art department for the 1984 version of DUNE paid tribute to David Lynch’s love of Bob’s Big Boy by presenting him with a handmade custom figurine of the BBB mascot wearing an Arrakis stillsuit.

USA = off the itinerary for the foreseeable future ps the drawings of her fellow detainees are lovely.

It looks like the strong disapproval of Trudeau for the past two years masked the underlying weakness of the Conservative electoral coalition, and as soon as he was gone, the mask started to come undone, revealing a country that, for demographic reasons, has a natural tendency to elect progressives.

The news last night about Danielle Smith asking Trump for a pause came as I was working on a column partly about Poilievre's people kicking around a similar idea.

Call it anecdotal, but my Canadian friends who are cancelling their US travel are not doing it because of tariff worries at all; they’re doing it because the US government is currently actively threatening Canada’s sovereignty and economy and they’re all justifiably furious
