the NYT reports that AI is great because it is a therapeutic cure for the desire to experience art and hey I think that is just called death

This is naked authoritarianism. It is exactly what happened in Turkey. There is nothing to stop this regime from demanding that faculty be purged too. Everyone must stand up and push back. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/u...

I continue to think that politically appointed judges and police chiefs is an absolutely terrible idea, and certainly not any kind of way to preserve the separation of powers. The natural end-point of a political system that does this is Trump and authoritarianism.

I dunno, but it seems like maybe there isn’t such a thing as a constitution if a president can just appoint some flunkies to the Supreme Court & then have them re-write the constitution on the fly to grant him unlimited power.

OK, I've read the injunction opinions once. I'll read them again and think about them some more. For now: This Court either doesn't think they're staring down fascism, or they do. At this point, I'm not sure what would be worse. Because either way they are making law that helps fascists.

Just to be safe, I think we should shut down Harvard & Yale law schools until we figure out what the hell is going on

Evergreen.

me: there’s nothing worse than opening a blank document microsoft word: hold my beer

⏰ the deadline is 30 June for this role with our new #Multispecies #Mutualisims project, generously funded by @wellcometrust.bsky.social pls do get in contact if you have any questions ⬇️

Worth reading just for a sense of how bizzare this guy's beliefs are.

Applications now open (until 27 June 2025) for the Institute of Historical Research's non-stipendiary IHR Fellowships. Ideal for active, non-affiliated historians who would benefit from a period embedded in @ihr.bsky.social 's community of public, local & academic historians, archivists, curators.

We are hiring! Fully tenured associate professorship in environmental history! We are looking for someone who can be a strong contributor to the history group, to a new #envhum related MA program (if all goes well), and to @greenhouseuis.net. #envhist

Hesgeth just stated that the UN (Atomic Agency) is no friend of the United States. What?! The Trump regime has a victimhood complex like no one else on earth.

This exactly. Most takes I've seen have focused on the "18yo in charge of £millions and public services", (certainly a worry) but the worst thing for me is that an 18yo has such bitter and jaded political views.

Making myself feel better about a desk rejection by sending my paper to a journal with a 1.6% acceptance rate next. Definitely a sign of a very healthy discipline.

Nothing says you've carefully selected me as the best person to review this article like getting my name wrong and sending me a paper on Baudrillard.

My latest paper Rights, Duties, and Inviolability has just been published in the Journal of Applied Philosophy. It’s probably my most theoretical work so far being in normative ethics and on the metaphysics of rights and duties. 1/n onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

There’s a thing that senior management types do, which is to schedule a meeting without checking if anyone else can attend, and then to reschedule it (sometimes repeatedly) when they have a clash. Nothing tells me my contributions aren’t valued at all in quite the same way.

Think you can delete "the diversity in" there, save some words.

Hi, government expert here! This is not funny. Governments only do this (moronic, flailing nonsense) when they're in extreme distress.

Follow the Scottish Parliament's inquiry into the disaster at Dundee University live here... the role of breaching its covenant with the uni's bank is already clear. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c1...

No10 has issued odd internal guidance banning officials speaking at public events It means more closed govt & worse policy decisions-the opposite of what ministers say they want From @drhannahwhite.bsky.social & me @instituteforgovernment.org.uk www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/gove...

What if, instead of liking each other’s posts, we read each other’s papers? (im assuming that every like i dont get is a paper read. i cant lose)

Every time I read these stories I cant help but think of Vance who came to Munich to tell Europe that we have freedom of speech problem.

The nights are drawing in and it’s only 182 days till Christmas: have you got your lights up yet? Important question for @wulfboyraff.bsky.social

If you're Mark Rutte, doing some light NATO-saving BDSM with Trump, what's your safe word?

Please take a moment and read this. Pauline doesn’t just teach ethical principles, she lives by them - even when it cost her a named Chair at the Naval War College. She’s a woman of character, through and through!

I don’t know who came up with the idea for Lynx’s* ‘Lower Body Spray’, but getting it to market was clearly a team effort. Every single member of that team, especially the marketing department, needs to be imprisoned in a very remote dungeon, possibly forever. * Axe for US readers.

Budgeting last year for a conference I'm helping organise, I assumed cost increases of about 20% for everything. Plane fares have instead gone up 60% and train fares have doubled. Just as well I've found savings elsewhere!

Person 1: Do you know how America’s class system works? Person 2: America has a class system? Person 1: Yes, that’s how it works. From @ingridrobeyns.bsky.social excellent book Limitarianism

At this point l'd even plug into the mediocre experience machine.

This is disingenuous nonsense. Foreign students already benefit the UK to the tune of almost £40 billion. So far, neither Labour nor the Tories have been willing to celebrate this, their main interest lies in treating foreigners badly so as to please unreasonable bigots. This is no different.

I think about this post so much these days. (h/t @doctorcochrane.bsky.social)

The lack of algorithm on Bluesky tells me that we were fools to accept it elsewhere. We all now talk about how Musk uses it to suppress dissent on twitter, but he hardly invented it. Letting someone else set parameters for what you see is maybe the most poisonous thing that social media normalised.
