Divided Supreme Court Rejects Bid for Religious Charter School in Oklahoma www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/u...

Really good journalism by @tyfenwick.bsky.social at Mirror Indy.

A recent study from Indiana finds that attending virtual charter high schools was associated with “large, negative impacts” on graduation rates and college enrollment: inschoolmatters.wordpress.com/2025/05/20/s...

“The bottom line: not only will the program bring vouchers to all fifty states, including states that have rejected them, but the deep-pocketed donors at the helm of the school-privatization Rolls Royce will now be able to profit off of their efforts to dismantle public schools.”

Sheila writes about private school vouchers and Christian nationalism, quoting Q&A with @joshcowenmi.bsky.social for @indianacitizen.org

Once again, you can’t make this stuff up.

Thanks to @indianacitizen.org for publishing my interview with @joshcowenmi.bsky.social on vouchers and their connection to Christian nationalism: indianacitizen.org/school-vouch...

Good explanation of what’s at stake with the SCOTUS religious charter school case.

There is no bottom for these people.

Private schools won’t get more money if IN makes its voucher program universal. The extra state spending (c. $100M) would go to families whose kids are already in private schools. inschoolmatters.wordpress.com/2025/04/11/v...

🧟ZOMBIE BILL ALERT🧟: Stop the Criminalization of Homelessness! We need your help to stop a dangerous zombie amendment on SB 197, which criminalizes homelessness. By taking action together, we killed this bill once, and we need your help to do it again!

Also, what’s the status of Todd Rokita’s lawsuit seeking to have Section 504 declared unconstitutional?

Thanks to @wfhb and local LWV for giving me a chance to talk about vouchers. wfhb.org/news-public-...

“A bill that would have required the district to share transportation resources with charters didn’t advance earlier this session. But Rep. Robert Behning, the Indianapolis Republican who authored the bill, told Chalkbeat he intends to insert language from that bill into other legislation.” 1

Good explanation of what’s happening at the Statehouse with IPS and charter schools.

Great reporting by @wdownard.bsky.social. Note: FGA was also behind the push last year to weaken child labor standards, which IN did.

Watching the IN legislature school funding subcommittee hearing. Not sure, but I don't think I'd have the nerve to say publicly that my spouse and I make >$270K and the state needs to give us $20K to send keep sending our kids to private schools.

This story is a lot meatier than the headline makes it sound. Detail: Speaker Huston says he stopped consulting for Stride Feb 28. The House budget that gives Stride (and Clarksville) a windfall passed Feb 20.

Key case in the Christian Nationalist goal of mandatory public funding of religious schools . www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/o...

Strange irony that this 2017 story on vouchers and discrimination quotes Roncalli counselor Shelly Fitzgerald, who would later be fired for sexual orientation. www.chalkbeat.org/2017/8/10/21...

Important story with comments from @hoosieraction.bsky.social

“The problem isn’t that Trump administration policies have already hit the economy. The problem is that unhinged wackiness is the Trump governing strategy.”

I wrote about what's really behind the assault on the Department of Education. Hint: Americans have long placed their faith in the idea that schools can *equalize* us. Now that equality is a banned term, both the department & public education are on the chopping block thebaffler.com/latest/cruel...

The poll didn’t ask if respondents want to cut public school funding by $2B over 3 years? Because that’s what Braun’s property tax plan would do.

“So it really is kind of a race to be the most racist. Any argument against that is just disingenuous”: Migrant justice rep calls IN anti-immigrant bill what it is. www.indystar.com/story/news/i...

Gov. Braun kicks of his staged anti-tax tour in teo cities where Democratic mayors recently replaced Republicans . Coincidence? events.in.gov/event/releas...

Great column by @profhicks.bsky.social. Republicans have so overused “woke” that it’s become absurd. www.indystar.com/story/opinio...

“As many of these conservatives see it, their (voucher supporting Texas) elected officials no longer represent them but are instead carrying out the marching orders of an assortment of billionaires.”

“Austerity”

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Thanks to @limestonepost.bsky.social for publishing my piece on school funding in IN: "Indiana earns D for effort" limestonepostmagazine.com/school-matte...

I wrote about @joshcowenmsu.bsky.social’s book about vouchers. You should read it. (The book, that is). inschoolmatters.wordpress.com/2025/01/27/t...

This is a big deal. Good for Justice Barrett for recusing her self. Her friend and former Notre Dame Law colleague has represented the school, according to Reuters. apnews.com/article/supr...

What do IPS’ critics mean by “control your destiny,” “figure this out,” “structural changes,” “continue to exist”? What do they want? Any ideas?
