Look, I'm not saying I called the Oilers comeback, but...

Newsom on Trump's military parade: "It's a vulgar display. It's the kind of thing you see with Kim Jong Un, you see it with Putin, you see it with dictators around the world that are weak ... Weakness masquerading as strength ... that's about as small as it gets ... that's Donald Trump."

Wait, was that Taylor Swift and whatsisface at the hockey game???

Mother of 2 (including 9-wk-old baby) + wife of US Marine had USCIS interview related to permanent residence status. She'd entered US from Mexico and was legally processed w/ her family about a decade ago. ICE arrested her over 2018 paperwork issue she didn't know about www.wbrz.com/news/ice-age...

I thought he was going to hire all the best people?

Possible to start to tell a unified story: "Trump is personally too old, crazy, and confused to run things, so at any given time the question is which co-president is in charge. At first it was Musk, & we got the crazy chaotic DOGE era. Then Navarro: a trade war that crashed markets. Now Miller..."

The inability to grasp the moral meaning of a famously unsubtle work of art— —and the suggestion that he might identify more with Javert, the inflexible obsessive lawman ultimately unable to live with himself after what he sees— —make this a perfect Trumpian moment of ignorance and immorality.

i am not being pollyannish when i insist that the people who sign up do not sign up to advance a president’s domestic political agenda www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

BREAKING: A few minutes ago, a vehicle of three people was rammed by a truck belonging to federal immigration authorities in Boyle Heights, CA. According to security footage shown to me, they deployed chemical munitions & detained the driver at gunpoint. All are US citizens according to the wife.

Love this city.

!!! Quinnipiac poll of 1,265 RVs, conducted from June 5-9, finds Trump at -11% approval on “immigration issues” and -16% on “deportations.” Full poll here: poll.qu.edu/poll-release...

The worst part of work travel is that it gives me access to American cable news. 🤦‍♂️

Congrats ABC. You must be so proud.

I really want to know who MAGAs assume will pick their fruit and clean their hotel rooms once they've scrared off low-wage immigrants. Maybe they view these as side hustles for grannies after they cut social security and medicare?

Every day the authoritarianism grows worse - Christopher Rufo calling for the Trump administration to "dispatch unmarked vans to follow key agitators and snatch them from the streets while the media are not looking" christopherrufo.com/p/trump-shou...

CNN’s reporter on scene in Los Angeles: I’m being detained..

@repmaxinewaters.bsky.social pleads with National Guard to not use their guns, yesterday.

"It was the most amount of less-lethals I’ve seen used in a single day protest," said @calmatters.org reporter @sergioolmos.bsky.social, struck in the chest with what he believes to be a 40mm sponge grenade. He's covered hundreds of days of protests in his career.

By law, Trump can’t send them in without invoking the Insurrection Act. And there’s noting about these protests that would merit that. But he’s no longer really bound by the law, because there’s no mechanism other than impeachment to hold him accountable for breaking it. So who the hell knows.

It's one round-trip flight, people. What could it cost? Two dollars?

The thing about Mexican flags at protests is that, whatever your opinion on them may be, it's impossible to entirely control what people bring to protests. And if there's one Mexican flag and five hundred American flags at a protest, people who want to publish photos of the Mexican flag will do so.

One side of thinks that 21st century America is a flaming hellscape. The other is unwilling to defend it. So here we are.

Wow when I saw this post, it was so wild, I had to look up the raw trade data for myself. Sure enough, U.S. wine exports to Canada have fallen off a cliff:

I ran an experiment, simultaneously posting articles on Bluesky and X, and then testing to see how many people actually clicked and read them. The numbers on Bluesky are higher, both because the X algorithm downranks journalism, and because Bluesky attracts readers, not just shitposters.

what people seem to believe is that there is a large number of criminal, layabout immigrants who can be easily found and deported. they support doing so snd are dismayed by the deportation of otherwise law abiding people. the problem is that the criminal group is imaginary!

This is exactly the problem. If you want to beat MAGA, you have to push back on this zero-sum nonsense. @jamellebouie.net youtube.com/shorts/eNV76...

As someone who lives in Los Angeles, don’t let social or mainstream media gaslight you into thinking there’s a violent uprising taking place here. The Trump administration is trying to punish this state and this city. He’s also setting a precedent to unleash troops on Democratic cities.

The problem is that so many people want this to be true. Motivated reasoning is a hell of a drug.

Lots of talk today about the demise of BlueSky. For whatever it's worth, it's been a boon to indie publishers like us. Twitter and Facebook have pretty much silenced us, so the engagement here has, and continues to be, wonderful.

Important thing to beat people over the head with: Trump has turned American cities into warzones and for fucking what? Prices are way up, jobs will be way down, the dollar is worth less, and now the highway is blocked off by cops. Maybe the Great Mythical Immigrant wasn’t the problem after all.

Tourists: wow, LA is so cool! *selfie* MAGA: dis pwace is so scawie waaahhhhh!!!

American consumers: demand low-skilled immigration. American voters: oppose undocumented workers. These are the same people.

Here’s the “Presidential Memorandum”: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... There’s no Insurrection Act invocation; Trump is federalizing 2000 CA Nat’l Guard personnel only to “protect federal functions.” *Without* invoking the Insurrection Act, anything more would violate the Posse Comitatus Act.

I've been critical of a lot of libertarians' taking a "well, you maybe gotta hand it to them" approach to many of Trump's actions these last five months. But Bier has always been solid, and it's not at all surprising he, and Cato's immigration team, is talking like this now.

Sending 2,000 troops to Los Angeles is the same thing as sending a few dozen random people to a gulag in El Salvador, they're doing this because it's a thing they've always wanted to do, not because of any broader goal or coherent plan. Subordination of strategy to tactical planning.

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming

There are two pathways to what Trump is doing: 1) He is federalizing 2000 National Guard troops; or 2) He is deploying 2000 members of another state’s National Guard with the permission of *that* state’s governor. These posts walk through the relevant authorities—and the questions they raise:

Remembering today the libertarians who insisted that Trump would be the better vote for advancing liberty.

Two LA photojournalists have been shot with tear gas canisters by DHS HSI, including @acatwithnews.bsky.social who was directly targeted by HSI and struck in the head. Sean is en route to the ER with obvious facial injuries. He was conscious and talking when he left the scene.

Hope other countries are excited for the LA Olympics!

Hell of a photo
