Had to wish @steveniles.bsky.social a wonderful birthday for his Big 6-0! In these scary days, 60 is the new 80!

Bye, Bluesky.

Toy of the night: Who played Headache?

"It's painful writing about the bad things in an art form, particularly when young kids are going to be enthusiastic about those things, because they haven't seen anything better, or anything different." Remembering Pauline Kael, born OTD in 1919.

BATMAN RETURNS opened OTD 32 years ago.

Today marks 12 years without James Gandolfini. He was 51.

Congratulations! If you woke up, you get a Wacky Packages Sticker from 1973 for today, and here it is! Collect 'em all!

A very happy 69th birthday to artist/writer Alan Davis! The Brit caught attention with CAPTAIN BRITAIN in the UK, his 1985 work on BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS broke him in the US, he's had outstanding turns on EXCALIBUR, X-MEN, AVENGERS and others, and his FF makes me weep with joy.

Mark Gruenwald would have been 72 today. The Oshkosh native began his involvement in comics writing articles for DC, but soon migrated to Marvel and became the embodiment of the company. Among his many successes, his CAPTAIN AMERICA, QUASAR, SQUADRON SUPREME loom large. Died when he was only 43.

Roger Ebert would have been 83 today. He left us in 2013. Somewhere he's seen FANTASTIC FOUR and SUPERMAN, and you haven't.

How's that for a splash page? Hitting stands OTD 51 years ago, OMAC #1 was a twist on an idea Jack Kirby had at Marvel of a futuristic Captain America, and he refined it for DC after his Fourth World books were canceled and he was under contract for 15 weekly pages. Had Jack read Alvin Toffler?

HOUSE OF USHER was released OTD in 1960, launching a string of over a dozen Poe-inspired AIP films lasting throughout the decade (some with only a tenuous link, like CONQUERER WORM and CRY OF THE BANSHEE), all but one starring Vincent Price. Love how Corman always made Vinnie's entrance dramatic.

THE FOOD OF THE GODS was released OTD in 1976, and while the reviews for the Bert I. Gordon film were dreadful, it wound up as AIP's highest grosser of the year, opening the door for other H.G. Wells adaptations. FAMOUS MONSTERS couldn't ask for a better cover than Drew Struzan's stunning poster.

Au revoir, Subby. SUB-MARINER #72 (published OTD in 1974) finishes his solo run that started in 1968. Steve Skeates scripts, slyly connecting the story to his final 1971 issue of AQUAMAN, with moody Dan Adkins art. But fear not, Effendi, as Namor would return within a year to face...Doom!

So often comics say “nothing will be the same again!” After this one, nothing was.

Hegseth should be removed for this comment alone. The deployment of US troops against our own citizens should be an unquestionable boundary we never cross.

HIRONO: If ordered by the president to shoot peaceful protesters in the legs, would you carry it out? HEGSETH: Of course I reject the premise of your question HIRONO: Considering that the president in his first term actually ordered such a thing, it's not a premise you can reject

51 years ago today. If you know your Marvel history, you know the importance of this issue.

The trailer for the Springsteen movie looks amazing. youtu.be/FIJ3grfB3WE?...

All you had to do was vote for the pantsuit lady.

Just going to join the host of lawyers and academics who are screaming at the press that THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T GET TO DECLARE WAR ALL ON HIS OWN no matter how special a boy he thinks he is.

Getting Iranian attack plans from Hegseth.

51 years ago today Frank Robbins delivered the rare horror cover for him for HOUSE OF SECRETS #123 and grossed us all out. (The finale of its Michael Fleisher/Alex Toth story is not nearly as disturbing.) Distribution of this issue was *very* spotty in Wisconsin; I was lucky to nab one!

Bob Kanigher was born OTD in 1915. A successful writer when he turned to comics in the 40s, for decades DC was the beneficiary of his prolific nature - and often the recipient of his volcanic temper. Wrote everything, but his war stories were often pure gold. He died in 2002.

Happy 83rd, Sir Paul. Rock on, the Cute One.

Happy National Go Fishing Day from the 2nd teaser trailer for TriStar's GODZILLA! youtu.be/BdVF74zEEfE?...

Ayatollah Khomeini died in June 1989. How many drinks has Ronny consumed today?

NEW: Gov. Hochul announces that the state is dedicating $50 million for legal assistance for immigrants like those who may be targeted by ICE when leaving the federal courthouse

"Rather than learning from the experiences of our own lifetime, from terror attacks to wars to financial crises to the pandemic, we are actually increasing the chances we relive them or worse in the near future. "We cannot anticipate what will come next." newrepublic.com/article/1968...

Prayers for an “allergic reaction.” But mockery and hateful conspiracies for murder victims who aren’t in your tribe. With no apology or remorse. Fake Christian, small man.

What was Chicago watching 70 years ago?

Julie London's "Cry Me a River" is one of the greatest of jazz standards, but she made TV GUIDE's cover 53 years ago today for her 6-year stint of playing Head Nurse Dixie McCall on NBC's EMERGENCY! And yet she subjected that glorious voice to more than three daily packs of cigarettes, dying at 74.

Blaming Joe Biden for Trump's crimes is the "Hillary didn't go to Wisconsin" of 2025.

Sure, don’t blame the guy actually committing ethical violations. Blame his predecessor for not putting more checks in place in case he returned. Could Biden have done more? Maybe. Should the tens of millions who voted for this shit (and those who sat out altogether) have done more? Absofukinlutely!

Remembering Wisconsin's John "The Tooz" Matuszak, who was only 38 when he died OTD in 1989. An NFL defensive end who played for five teams, he turned his attention to acting with roles in THE GOONIES, CAVEMAN and NORTH DALLAS FORTY. He accidentally overdosed on Darvocet. Such a loss.
