If you're a Marine or other service member being mobilized to Los Angeles and you'd like to apply for conscientious objector status, call the GI Rights Hotline to get some guidance on your options: 1-877-447-4487

I've been saying this, and friends/family just respond with "I only use it to make my emails sounds more professional." Aggravating that people are cool with destroying the environment and using a plagiarism machine just to avoid learning proper grammar.

The big “why do you hate AI?” Thread got comments and quotes turned off, but here’s the main reason I hate AI: It’s being developed by the worst people on the planet solely to enrich themselves at the expense and labor of the world’s vulnerable populations. Everything else stems from that

Just watched the video. Teary-eyed and about to read about how I can help.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

It’s so weird spending 5 years working on something in service to others and then it’s out in the world and you have to spend all your time being like “hey will you buy this and read it bc it’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done and I would hate for it to go to waste” 😂 bookshop.org/p/books/let-...

Im seeing endless workshops on "how to use AI/incorporate AI in the classroom" etc, does anyone know of workshops on how to refuse AI? Not even be critical of AI (which is often just one or two slides of handwaving-but-it-is-here) but to refuse it in the classroom and in our research?

I get why techbros and their ilk like gen-AI: artists and writers to them are just an obstacle to be bypassed. But I'll never get an author/artist/musician who uses it. "I want to be a writer." No you don't. You fetishize ideas but hate the work. You don't respect the craft or its practitioners.

NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:

Stand with trans Americans. You don’t have to understand everything about the transgender experience to know that Trump’s acts of humiliation and dehumanization are unjust and dangerous. www.thebulwark.com/p/stand-with...

1. Today, Senate Democrats showed spine, and killed a national transgender sports ban bill via filibuster. Not a SINGLE Democrat voted for cloture. S. Baum writes about what happened today, including some of the speeches. Subscribe to support our journalism.

At the end of the day, we tell you that generative AI is built on unethical copyright theft, exploits and underpays its workers, causes catastrophic environmental damage, and produces increasingly terrible looking shit, and you just decide not to care.

I let out the most ridiculous snort-wheeze of my life

I think I've been slowly sliding into font-nerdom, and this beautiful article solidified that.

Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes. You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment. My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc. www.reddit.com/r/Passports/...

so uh my book about having been one of the first to have a controversial new form of gender affirmation surgery drops next week just got told yesterday, the only promotion it's getting is what I myself can find for it know of any trans/nonbinary-centered news orgs who might want an interview...?

Write every day. Build a habit. That’s the only way you’re ever going to finish a book, right? Wrong. @allisonkwilliams.bsky.social explains.

Oh, these are too cute

Shared this thread with someone this morning and it is probably a good idea to bump it for everyone

Turns out you can write a lot of articles in a year mythcreants.com/blog/our-top...

Stephen King: i'm gonna be over at unicorn fuck club tonight Clive Barker: yeah me too Poe: why are you both going to unicorn fuck club tonight? Barker: why not? it's my prerogative Poe:

In case anybody who follows me was also unaware of this Kickstarter campaign. The Wayward Children series was my introduction to Seanan McGuire and within the first couple pages it became my favorite series ever.

"When the Hunger Games movie cast a Black girl as Rue, there was an uproar, even though the character had always been Black." mythcreants.com/blog/dont-li...

After today I decided I never again want to waste my time arguing with cis gays about why supporting Harry Potter and the Queen of the TERFs is harmful, so I wrote a blog summarizing the whole thing. Please do share it widely instead of wasting yours.

Finally, some good news.

WOTD “stop right there!” edition. Whoa. The vowels go at the end. Yes, both of them. Yes, really. I promise. Just say no to “woah.”

Well, that's pretty awesome

We have a live example of why they're called "pig-butchering" scammers! They're called that because they use the whole pig, ie, they don't just take a little money from their victims, they slaughter them and use them all. I'm gonna be slow on this thread because I'm doing exhaustive alt text, but:

okay, we're starting with this Step 1. call your own rep if you haven't already! Step 2. sign this (cis women only please! cis guys, you can help by boosting) Step 3. much depends on the success and reach of step 2; lots of options if this blows up actionnetwork.org/petitions/no...

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Every damn day

Any Ewoks out there?

Your friends in the comics industry have been working on something to visually warn voters what's in Project 2025, Trump's actual "concepts of a plan." Please be a force multiplier and spread this link wherever you can. stopproject2025comic.org

If you love fantasy books, you’ll definitely want to read this article. “A woman with dwarfism, Judy-Lynn del Rey was best known for founding Del Rey Books, a science fiction and fantasy imprint that turned fantasy in particular into a major publishing category.” #BookSky

I was just told that my horror writing class's enrollment is low enough that it might get canceled 💀 If you or anyone you know is interested in getting to know the genre in a fun and accessible way, please check it out! www.atlasobscura.com/experiences/...
