I think a lot of people's fears of urban life are fed by the luxury belief that violence is about stranger danger and dark alleyways when it's more often about family and poverty. Any woman could get on the rankest subway car at 1 a.m. and statistically be safer than they are at home

I will take AI seriously when my smart speaker understands the phrase “original broadway cast recording.”

When researching for my dissertation, I came across an article in off our backs that claimed the plenary of the NWSA’s 1982 annual conference was delayed because keynote speaker Angela Davis failed to “produce a proper badge.”

Justice Sotomayor's dissent in Skrmetti (which she's now reading from the bench) is deeply pained, accusing her colleagues of abandoning "transgender children and their families to political whims" and badly damaging "bedrock" principles of equal protection. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

I hope that no one ever treats Liz Bruenig the way she wants the state to be able to treat us.

Awful time to be alive but truly an amazing time to be a hater

"The incident was the latest in nearly daily mass deaths of Palestinians who were seeking aid in past weeks, including near sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation."

It’s really tiring, isn’t it, being scared and upset all the time

WHATS ON THE SIGN @travisradina.bsky.social

WE CAN'T SEE THE CODE #a2council

Everything is bad and now it is slightly worse because the #a2council summer game code remains a mystery. Council is taunting me.

fuck yeah

This is everywhere. Every academic institution I know is held together by some exhausted woman in her early 40's who waits until the old white male professors have finished their vague rants and says, "alright, so concretely can I propose the following next steps..." She makes half their salary.

Everything is bad but adding insult to injury is that we’re doing anti-kink discourse, during Pride, ABOUT SABRINA CARPENTER???? ffs

rude.

1. You voted to confirm her. 2. Why did you stand there it looks like you’re wearing a wizard hat

This is the status quo. People can't afford to live here. If you want change, sign the petition at neighborspetition.org to urge the #a2council to adopt a land-use plan that promotes higher density and greater diversity in housing. www.mlive.com/news/ann-arb...

Whole lot of people saying “she must resign” who should be saying “I am introducing articles of impeachment.”

NY times: Spirited Kristi Noem Briefing Interrupted by Annoying Sound of Democrat Senator Padilla's Skull Hitting Floor

In the past week, a union leader has been arrested, a U.S. Rep charged with a crime, a U.S. Senator violently handcuffed, and reporters shot with rubber bullets and detained. There is no ambiguity. This is a regime operating as an authoritarian. Americans who believe in liberty must oppose it.

We've just updated the @wired.com guide to protecting your privacy while attending protests with the latest best practices. @agreenberg.bsky.social and @lhn.bsky.social report: www.wired.com/story/how-to...

Oh everybody is Black now.

The TransLatina Coalition like many organizations recently lost much of their funding. One of my amazing friends started a fundraiser here. Share and donate if you can! give.translatinacoalition.org/fundraiser/6...

Again, the overwhelming amount of violence in L.A. county is being done by law enforcement, be it federal or local.

The charges against Prof. Willoughby-Herard were finally dropped yesterday. She courageously defended UCI students against police stifling dissent against Israel's genocide in Gaza. I am inspired by her courage and honored to have represented her in this case. Solidarity with those who fight.

It's sobering to see the delusion of white liberals. To think the military will not harm Americans. What an existence it must be to be so ignorant of the world. "The Marines don't have any combat experience." "They're not going to harm people from their own neighborhood" *stares in MOVE bombing*

I wonder if I will live to see a day when they let Dr. King rest instead of misrepresenting him every time a kid throws a rock

Big thanks to @mollyak.bsky.social and @jessicaletaw.bsky.social for having me on @annarboraf.bsky.social to talk about why it's time for a new Downtown Library, all that it will bring to our patrons, and @aadl.org's plan to build an awesome new Downtown Library with housing above! Give it a listen:

We’re back to tell you about proposals A&B, which would authorize the sale of the Library Lot to the AADL to build a new downtown library across both sites w/ mixed-income housing above. Here’s our fun & informative interview w/ AADL director @eli.aadl.org! #a2council annarboraf.com/episode-79-n...

it’s gonna be a long, hot summer isn’t it

Those concerned about violence might want to start with violence against immigrants, by ICE here, by illegal deportations to gulags and third countries, the violence against so many federal departments, against the law, the climate, the public lands, waters, civil rights, reproductive rights...

Feels like a uniquely American brand of stupidity to try and mobilize troops for the battle of Home Depot

The weird, often whitewashed way the civil rights movement is taught (or not taught) seemed to convince a lot of people that nonviolence was met with nonviolence, instead of you know, dogs, hoses, beatings, death, etc

see also: the belief in this thing called a “peaceful protestor” that, if facing arrest or violence from police, anyone can prove they are

I think the easiest historical way to view this is that these are a bunch of white men of a certain age who fantasize about going back in time and murdering every person of color who dared protest over the Rodney King trial verdict. And here they are, salivating at sending the army to LA.

Seeing a massive divide online between Angelenos of all political stripes who understand that the protests in LA yesterday were mostly peaceful and any violence was ICE-initiated and East Coast establishment liberals lecturing “the left” on how riots just amplify right wing talking points.

If interested, I have a zine about the use(s) of tear gas by police against protesters in the U.S. issuu.com/projectnia/d...

I worked with a Black elder at the Charlotte MEPS who had been a member of SNCC and people really discount the amount of planning and training that went into the Non-violent protests of the Civil Rights era. It started with selecting who could show up to the action.
