“Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from a religious conviction.” — Blaise Pascal

Some of the worst depraved acts and inhumane atrocities inflicted upon the world have been perpetrated by people who feel “certain” they are right, and who believe they are called by God to right the world’s wrongs.

This field is a couple of blocks from where I live in Northern California, and I love walking there to take photos different times of day. The mood of the field and sky is ever-changing. I’m preparing to paint several ordinary fields in our area.

In a world that is fixated on hate, greed, and political desperados, I am grateful that love ultimately wins. It has in the past, and it will in the future. Those who believe otherwise are on a futile journey, which I invite you to abandon. Come join us in our caravan of grace and compassion.

“Everyone will be tested with fire” (Mark 9:49, NLT). Heartache knows where you live. If you are lucky enough right now to have a carefree life, celebrate your good fortune, but just know that one day this will pass. When suffering knocks on your door it’ll know your name and why it is there.

The mission of suffering and loss is to spoil your sense of joy. But if you have a joy that isn’t based upon your circumstances, who can mess with it? Who can destroy it? If you understand that everything’s broken, then you’ll be grateful for anything that works. Gratitude is life’s WD40.
