👏 Six of the best Yorkshire villages Yorkshire has many picture-perfect villages, often steeped in history and a joy to visit: here are our writer’s top spots By Ian Richardson @ricojosh.bsky.social

Enjoying watching #Sting at the #IsleofWightFestival

This is a fascinating podcast interview.

"Farage is the sort of guy that drives you out of your favourite pub." Lord Chris Patten questions why the Reform leader remains a political force - suggesting gutlessness and a squeeze on living standards fuel his rise. @lewisgoodall.com

Only 30% of pall care is NHS funded. Given today's vote, will Keir Starmer at least commit to dramatically increasing palliative care provision so that patients don't "choose" to end their lives because we, society, fail to give them the care that might make life worth living?

This is excellent.

Yes another you cannot be serious article in The Guardian. www.theguardian.com/fashion/2025...

We've got some new traders on Bishy Road in #York, carrying on a tradition of female independent shopkeepers. Latest blogpost at www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk/blog/new-lif...

We do not need new roads; we need better transport options. Think of what could be done with £9.2bn, which is to be spent on just 14 miles of road! It could transform bus services and/or cycling and pedestrian infrastructure across Britain. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Maybe #York should start some trials, offering people incentives if they try to give up using their cars for a period.

Fantastic article. “While driving had been habitual for most participants, going car free disrupted their routines and participants’ positive experiences raised their capacity to become less reliant on their cars” But, some found a lack of travel infrastructure and services impeded car free travel

Just discovered that our @theguardian.com and Observer combined digital subscription now only covers the Guardian, with no reduction in price and no notification, following the sale to Tortoise. (There was a hefty increase in cost in November 2023).

PADILLA: “If this is how the administration responds to a Senator with a question, you can only imagine what they're doing to farmworkers, cooks, and day laborers throughout the country.”

I enjoyed talking to the @yorkfestofideas.bsky.social audience yesterday, about the railways brought thousands of working class tourists in 1844 to the city for the first time. It was the start of mass tourism to the city, a similar phenomenon in leisure mobility to budget flights in the 1990s.

Brilliant from @llinosmedi.bsky.social‬! We must end the demonisation of immigrants. Immigrant's bring vibrancy to our country, without them we would all be poorer. We must stand up to those who peddle populist immigration policies to drive class division and yet fly on private jets.

Look! Look! We found a big number.

Brilliant to see this out in @UK.theconversation.com - as we release our huge new Railway Work, Life & Death project dataset today:

Chat GPT – a word of warning www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/06... It has admitted to me that it just makes stuff up.

I think this is almost certainly true. We now hail Atlee’s government as a beacon of Labour principles but they only served one term?

In partnership with @lner.co.uk‬, we celebrate 200 years of the modern railway with a series of events examining the transformational power of rail – past, present and future. FESTIVAL FOCUS - Beyond the Tracks: Innovation and transformation - 7 Jun yorkfestivalofideas.com/2025/festiva...

I'll be talking at the York Festival of Ideas next Saturday, 7 June 2025, part of a panel focusing on how the railways have transformed York. I'll be showing how events in the 1840s brought mass tourism to York. Details of this free event at yorkfestivalofideas.com/2025/calenda...

A brilliant turnaround @safc.com. Many congratulations on getting back to the Premier League #SAFC

Exports down £27bn. GDP down 5%. Trade down 15%. That’s the Brexit legacy – and now they’re complaining someone’s fixing it. Read this punchy letter to the whingers. ⤵️

Great to see #Robinsons in #BishyRoad on this list. www.thetimes.com/travel/desti...

Our next talk is tomorrow night, Fri 23 May, at Clements Hall York, see www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk. Anne Houson features the history of Rowntree Park, gifted to the people of York over 100 years ago. It looks at how the park and our relationship to it has changed over those years.

“I sit on a man's back choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am sorry for him and wish to lighten his load by all means possible… except by getting off his back.” Leo Tolstoy

Having scanned the media and social media reactions to yesterday's Brexit deal, I would say the only people who don't like it are newspaper owners living overseas and fake/bot/bigot accounts. Everyone else seems quite happy about it to me. 🤷‍♀️

Local government core spending fell sharply during the austerity years and has not yet recovered. While there has been some recovery in core spending power since the mid-2010s, this has been primarily driven by increasing Council Tax - which is highly regressive.

The courts and AI By me, tomorrow at @prospectmagazine.co.uk (And certainly not written by a bot.)

Our July seminar celebrates #trains at the #seaside for #railway200. The fantastic @mrtimdunn.bsky.social will be talking miniature railways, Susan Major is discussing excursions and Richard Furness is looking at railways and resort development. BOOK NOW! 🚂🏖️ seasideheritage.org.uk/events/upcom...

A report from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine reveals that many older people in England endure long A&E waits. We hear from a reader who struggled getting adequate emergency care for her vulnerable mother who is in her 90s. #NHS #ElderlyCare

Quick reminder that thanks to free trade even an American product like a Boeing 737 is a truly international affair. Costs for this should only go up under the currently proposed US tariff scheme. That’s inflationary in nature. Not sure how inflation can be curbed in the US in the short term.

I’ve seen attack spads on fire off the shoulder of Number 10. I watched C-list MPs glitter in the dark near Lancaster Gate. All those MPs will be lost to Reform, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Are #M&S getting worried? The last couple of times I've been in their clothing department, I've seen staff on the floor, and what's more they've said hello and offered help. This hasn't happened for years! Is it a new instruction?

I'll be talking about early Victorian railway excursions to the seaside at this online event in July www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/onl...

This is a really illuminating article - it explains the mercifully few social occasions when I've been trapped with people who make no attempt to take an interest in my life, after asking about theirs. Such a dispiriting experience. But giving them a name, the #non-askers, helps!

Our latest blogpost is a taster for our new book about #Micklegate in #York, due out this autumn. The post features the horse tramways which operated in Micklegate between 1882 and 1910 www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk/blog/the-mic... @balhnews.bsky.social

Here's something I wrote trying to explain why Brexit still isn't 'done' and the true implications of leaving the SM/CU. I had help from an expert kind enough to explain things properly to me. It's something I'm hoping to do a lot more with, and hope it's useful. centralbylines.co.uk/news/brexit/...
